There's more than one reason (Fiona's "Across The Universe") to see the film Pleasantville. It's great! It starts out as a comedy, though with a seemingly cynical view of both the 1990's and the 1950's, but ends up saying some interesting and important things about love of life, passion for the people and pursuits we love, prejudice and the fear of what we don't understand, and the goodness that can always be found inside ourselves, if we learn where and how to look. It's a *wonderful* movie! Chris and I saw it last night and we'll definitely see it again. Wow, there hasn't been a week like this in a long time...So much music over just a few days... First off, on Thursday night a highly anticipated and very special double bill at Gunther Murphy's. Thomas Negovan resurrects Three Years Ghost to headline with his very special blend of gorgeous orchestral rock, while everybody's favorite - Justin Roberts - opens the show at 9pm. You *will* cry. I've been waiting to see this show for about 3 months now. Beg them for a poster! This week's EVENT, hands down, the show to see, the do not miss this, the "are you nuts, what do you mean you can't make it" SHOW of the year! Catherine Smitko is performing at the Gentry on Halsted this Friday night! The address is 3320 N. Halsted. The GREAT thing is that the show is from 7:30-9:30. TWO HOURS(I'll probably need to be taken to the emergency room at some point) and SO early. Many people write to me asking where can they get more SMITKO or where can they hear her. Well here you go! Lot's of people have stuff going on for Halloween on Friday(even thought Halloween isn't until Saturday). But anything else you've got going on, you can do after Cathy's set, because it's SO early! Like, I'll be heading over to BOO TOO! at 225 S. Racine after Cathy's set. The Halloween Party to be at this year... BUT CATHY'S SET IS FIRST! No cover at the Gentry, but they do like you to buy a drink. It's a piano bar and Catherine will be singing torch and cabaret stuff. Oh my god. You've heard her sing JIG OF LIFE, now come hear her live! On Saturday night, the official Halloween night, there is lots to do and see and hear. My recommendations are many, but I'll keep it to two. The MOVIEGOERS present The 2nd Annual "Ghosts of Rock n Roll Past!" I just want to hear a Nirvana song and I'm happy. But they'll also be playing songs by other dead people like, well...you'll just have to come and find out. Its at 10pm at Martyr's which is located at 3855 N. Lincoln. They'll be followed by the Good, so again, you could probably be out of there by around 11:30 if you got somewhere else to go. I went to this event last year and stayed for both sets. The Good are Good. But as you probably know, the Moviegoers are divine. Not to be missed. They'll have some special guests with them as well, which is always cool. Including, but I bet not limited to: Chloe F. Orwell, Justin Roberts, Steve Frisbie, Stephanie Turner, Eric Zeigenhagen, Mike Konopka and Danny Shaffer. I will see you there... The Baltimores are at The Fireside Bowl (18+). They go on at 10pm and the cover is ?? Wear your costumes. As I will be at the Moviegoers gig, I'll be catching up with The Baltimores by heading over to a party called BLOOD MOON(The other EVENT for Saturday), its around 1952 N. Milwaukee (check out this triple bill!) where they will be playing at 11:45, The BLUE MEANIES go on at 12:45 with J DAVIS TRIO ripping it up at 2am. So many cute boys all in one room, it will probably be the second trip to the emergency room for me in one week... You can get specific address and details (It is $10 and that covers beverages and food) by calling Dave or Ron of Japan 773-235-9121. _____________________________________________________________________________ A bunch of our friends are on tour; The Aluminum Group, Nora O'Connor & The Blacks, and My Scarlet Life. While there was some difference of opinion about the album, I think it was more a matter of liking or disliking the production rather than the rest of the album living up to "No Mermaid." Personally, I like the album quite a bit and think there are a few tracks that surpass "No Mermaid," though there are a few spots where I think simplifying the arrangements would have improved some of the songs. I *love* _Disintegration_ immensely, but for alls its lovely orchestrations and wonderfully mopey songs, I nominate _Seventeen Seconds_ as the group's best and most depressing album. For some reason, "Secrets," "In Your House," "A Forest" and the title track are all very introspective and cathartic tunes for me ... I think mainly because of the time in my life this album takes me back to. So, _Seventeen Seconds_ is the best, _Disintegration_ next, and yes, _Pornography_ has to be third, for me anyway. Followed by _Japanese Whispers_, _Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me_, etc. My fave cure song, however, is "Charlotte Sometimes." Can we just say that The Cure is the *saddest band* ever? I've been listening to WXPN for a number of years. Up until about 6 months ago, most of what you said was true. During the hours that I listen (morning and early afternoon) the shows became painfully boring. There was a time that I was buying at least 2 CD's a week based on the great stuff they were playing. Happy's CD was the only one bought in the last 4 months up until last week. You tell me why they were using names like Lorrena Mc Kennit, Happy Rhodes, Ani Di Franco as people that they play when they did their fund raiser, and never played them once while I was listening. Hell, they hardly played tori or Kate Bush anymore. I believe this happened when they brought in Shawn Stewart to be part of programing. I know that when Marilyn left and Shawn took over her spot thats when the music and the show became very boring. Having said all this, Helen Leicht has been on the mid day show for a week now and did not say she was filling in. She sounds like she is actually the new DJ. And last week was the best musically speaking in months. I don't know if she controls the programming on her show but, someone improved it. I hope it continues because I agree there are no real alternatives in philly. And that is what upset me so much in recent months. fred ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #382 **************************
