For those who don't know, Phranc is a San Francisco based, Jewish punk-folksinger with FTM(female-to-male) trangendered tendencies. First rose to minor attention with her song "I Hate Female Mud Wrestling" and when she opened for the Smiths on their Queen Is Dead tour. She is somewhat a living legend in the S.F. indie rock scene and the Queercore movement. I've been a fan of hers for years. Anyhoo, she covers The Handsome Cabin Boy on her new CD, and like Kate, I think she played around with the lyrics a bit... She does a great job with this and the whole record is great. Although THCB is a traditional work, I wouldn't be surprised if it was Kate's version that introduced her to the song. If I get a chance in the next few days I'll post the lyrics that Phranc uses. For the Ecto's: Anna Waronker is credited with background vocals on two tracks. Hey gang... I was out looking at records with a friend of mine the other day, and he showed me a CD by the French singer Francoise Hardy. Comparing her to Tori if she grew up in France in the 1960s, he said, "she kicked ass and took no shit from anyone." While this could also be a fair assessment of our favourite faerie girl, my question to you guys is: is she really that Tori-esque? How is her work? - --C. - ---- Chelsea, the mod pixie home: away: tugboat@channel1.com odyshape@hotmail.com "I started out as a missionary, but I couldn't find a religion which didn't promise things to some people at the exclsion of others. That Terra Incognita is the name of a recording studio in Bath, England, sometimes used by Peter Hammill and other erstwhile members of bands related to Van der Graaf? Just picked up the double live CD by Guy Evans & PH "The Union Chapel Concert" (1998) and noticed the studio mention in the liner notes by Guy. Had to review some of my back PH catalog to see that it has been used before. I'm guessing that the similarity of name to the TI we all here know and love is purely a coincidence. The aforementioned CD is very interesting, featuring various musicians at various points during the concert, many new renditions of older PH material, culminating in a "one song one-off reformation" of VdGG for "Lemmings". Great stuff if you're into this sort of thing. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Oct 1998 19:08:16 -0400 (EDT) From: sam Subject: mary margaret o'hara i'm sure others will be reviewing this gig, so i'll leave it up to someone more eloquent. however, i just want to gush briefly: last night's concert at st ann's was one of (if not the most) amazing musical experiences i've ever had. the band was perfect, the church was beautiful, and mary was in excellent form. it's been a long time since i've been so absolutely blown away by a live performance. i just wish she'd come back here more often! sam "we are quick-change artists we girls" www.interport.net/~slambert ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Oct 1998 10:52:01 +0000 From: "Tim" Subject: Black Tape For A Blue Girl I was investigating the new Borders in Melbourne, Australia (no less!), and despite a few twinges of American imperialism, I was overall very impressed. The largest book store I've ever been to in Australia, and its a three minute walk from my house. The music section was also very impressive, especially for the amount of American imports (they had a copy of Warpaint and The Keep, if anyone's interested). Anyway, I came across a few artists signed to the Projekt label (easily identified because all of them had nice, gushing blurbs), such as Love Spirals Downward, loveliescrushing and Lycia. The first two at least I've heard stuff about and intend to pick up Idyllis and Xetuvyan shortly. However one Projekt artist I hadn't heard about, Black Tape For A Blue Girl, had a very extensive collection and an album on a listening post - Remnants of a Deeper Purity. I din't have much time to listen, but what I heard sounded very interesting. Does anyone know much about this group, if they're very good, where to start etc? Some beautiful stuff. Projekt has a website (www.projekt.com) with information on the band.
