Thanks to everyone who sent such great suggesions for ethnic ambient trance/dance music (How's that for a genre name? Ugh. :)) As I said to someone privately, I'll have to print out the long (and growing) list of interesting-sounding music to take shopping when I next have an opportunity. By the way, to the person who suggested Bali music, I have heard a little Gamelan and liked what I heard, but it was quite a while ago. I've been pretty wrapped up in western rock, pop and acoustic music for the past several years, and haven't been paying much attention to music from the rest of the world. Guess I got a little bit sick of the low-tech "world beat" stuff, that's basically either music from various African countries, or from South America. I don't mean to disparage it, I used to listen to that stuff a lot, but just grew tired of it. I think I'm now intersted in music that combines modern technology with ethnic styles, and in music from various parts of Asia and the Middle East. So you folks have given me lots to work with here! I use to cry when I heard the song "Winter" by Tori Amos. The "Winter" will always have a special place in my heart because it was one of the first musical bonding moments for me and my boyfriend. We were sitting in my car, in the parking lot of his then-apartment building and I told him he had to listen to a song. I then played "Winter" quite loudly, and we were absolutely silent. When it was over, we both had tears in our eyes. It was a special moment. Michael n.p. Man, I love that song. I get a similar reaction whenever I hear that song. Ironically, although I do find it very happy, I'll tie this into an old thread of songs that make you cry. This one brings tears to my eyes for the melody. There's something about the turn of the tune that hits me quite viscerally! Michael n.p. I'd actually be interested to know what you don't like about it. Is it the music, the instruments or the male rapping etc. etc.? I can understand that CT fans might not all be too fond of it (as unreasonable as expecting Aerosmith fans to like Public Enemy), but I'd be interested in knowing the reasons behind it. For example I find stuff like Inertia Creeps to be so brilliant aurally that I would say it was almost objectively good, so I'd be interested in knowing what people *could* find fault with. Stay away from Massive Attack as well then, but Ruby, Lamb and Bjork are very much un-hip-hop, being trip-Jungle, trip-industrial and trip-weirdness respectively. Everything But The Girl's latest album Walking Wounded is also very nice in a mellow, sort of poppy way. Also! Have you heard Depeche Mode? Well if you haven't or have only heard eighties DM, try their 97 album Ultra which is hard edged trip-hop with no hop at all. On a trancey, flowing type bent but without dance at all, try Talk Talk's '88 rock-jazz-ambient manifesto, Spirit Of Eden. If anyone has any extra BNL tix or knows where I can get them for the Indiana/Ohio/Kentucky shows, *please* email me. My new favorite band, Unbelievable Truth (they are so, so, *so* amazing!) are opening for them and I REALLY want to see both bands... Also, UT is opening for Tori Amos on a few of her upcoming University shows... Check them out, you will _not_ be disappointed (frontman Andy Yorke is Radiohead Thom Yorke's brother. They sound similiar but UT is better imho) Email me! jessica n. weiser / 00jnweiser@bsuvc.bsu.edu \ songbird22@aol.com "and is this the proof against my ignorance, or am i meant to waste away? and did i choose to be the one who is left, Or is this something sinister? say what you want, say what you want..." Based on what I've read, I have ordered two of Massive Attacks's Cd's from my wholesaler. The only thing I would like to comment on is that I saw BJORK at a small venue in Philly, the Trocadero, a couple of years back. She was everything that I had hoped for and more. Her opening act was Tricky. I found him interesting at best and, I liked the voice of the female lead he had. I guess my question is what does he do that garners so much respect in the industry?? I found everything he did forgetable and he was lifeless on stage. That might of been because he kept on lighting what I thought were joints during his performance. I don't think that was his problem though. fred m....... ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #377 **************************
