The first thing I heard on the new album (before I got mine) was Roy playing on WXPN, and I thought "Hm....I'm not gonna like this." Then I got the CD and had very mixed feelings about it, liking the title track the most (I think, then and now, that it was the best bet for a single). Right before the Philly show, I started rotating it more in my CD player at work, and grew to like the whole album, but still very luke-warm on Roy. Until the show. Seeing the imagry, however flawed, and hearing and experiencing the music whole and live, the whole album finally clicked for me. MWABT is definetly now in the top 3 and maybe even #2 for me. (Rhodes 1 is still my favorite). The biggest gainer that day for me was Roy. I can't stop humming it! Sunday All Over the World got together for one album (I don't know if they toured). IIRC, they were Toyah Wilcox on vocals, Robert Fripp (her husband) on guitar, Trey Gunn on Stick, and... ummm... a drummer (Paul Beavis? Pat Mastellato?). The sound, as might be expected, was very much that of Toyah fronting 80s/90s King Crimson. The CD was on EG, I believe, and shows up a lot in used bins. One of my earliest memories is watching a TV-movie starring Dick Van Dyke as an alcoholic, and I can still see the black-and-white imagry of him throwing up blood into the bath tub, his wife and children had left him, and the song played on. Still gives me goosebumps... Does anyone else remember this movie? > I'm > sad even though I've done something in reaction to > the brutal murder by homophobes of Matt Shepard in I heard on NPR's All Things Considered something very interesting the other day. A commentator remarking that we should not be calling these things "Hate Crimes", because most of these cretins take pride in their hate, and see nothing wrong with it. Instead we should call them "Crimes of Ignorance", something which is so very true. I mean lots of different kinds of percussive sounds with complex rhythms, even where the percussion dominates the sound. Any recommendations? Yes, I was one of the lucky thousands who spent a part of this weekend at one of the Bridge School Benefit shows organized by Neil Young each year here in the SF Bay Area. The lineup was (imho) really good this time 'round: The Eels, Jonathan Richman, Set Change (Pete Droge & Mike McCready), The Wallflowers, Barenaked Ladies, Sarah McLachlan, Neil Young, R.E.M., and Phish. I admit that I went to see BNL more than anyone else, since I've read that they're great live and never had the chance to see them. For those of you unfamiliar with the Bridge School shows, they have one specification in common (apart from the presence of Neil Young) - they are supposed to be all-acoustic. I admit that I spent the first three acts sprawled out on the lawn in the sun watching people (and being more surprised than I should have been at how darn many Phish fans seemed to be at the show) more than I was listening to the music, but after that I definitely paid attention. (Jonathan Richman sounded a lot like Adam Sandler to me, which was not in his favor.) I haven't found the Wallflowers tracks I've heard on the radio (way too many times) to be especially appealing, but I liked their live acoustic set, I think because it seemed to have a more mellow groove. I still have no intention of purchasing their music, but I wouldn't come late to miss them opening (or leave early if I had come to see their opener). Barenaked Ladies were great (as expected) and made me laugh so hard I had actual tears running down my cheeks. I think the last time that happened at a show was over a year ago when I saw Sara Hickman (who's really fabulous live with just her and her guitar, and *way* overproduced in the studio). My favorite bit was the medley BNL did at the end of their set with snippets of a bunch of top-40 junk all mangled together with a few oddities. I am still chuckling (or cackling, to use my companion's rather impolite term) over the BNL take on Brandy & Monica's "The Boy Is Mine", mixed with that ubiquitous annoying "Bittersweet Symphony" song and a touch of Sesame Street's (?) "Near and Far" skit. Boy, am I really really really glad that I've got tickets to their upcoming sold-out show at the Warfield here in SF. I expect I'll go home with a stomachache from laughing too hard, too long, just as I did at the Hickman show. Sarah was next up, which was not quite in her favor since the crowd was really worked up from BNL and not exactly in the mood to sit back and listen to her quiet/depressing/gorgeous music. I was really glad I finally had the chance to hear her acoustic, with no accompaniment apart from her own piano or guitar playing. I'd seen her at the last two Lilith Fair shows, but her voice just doesn't shine through with a whole band backing her up. I'm not sure her voice was in quite top form, but it sure sounded good to me. Later in her set she brought out band members, and also played with parts of BNL. There was a brief bit of Canadian love-fest going. I really liked hearing her do Path of Thorns as a duet with one of the BNL guys, and it was cute/sweet to see/hear her do "Ice Cream" with her husband singing along. I don't remember him singing during Lilith Fair, but maybe the band drowned *him* out too... I found Sarah's between-song chatter to be pretty inane, though, and filled with nothing but platitudes ("You've only got one life to live", etc.) - is she always like that? Should I just hope for shows filled with a minimum of chit chat from her, or can she do better? Neil Young was up after Sarah, and I as I found him to be less impressive than the audience's reaction to him (which was really loud and appreciative), I'll skip talking about him. If you really care about reading more about any of the performances, I've tacked the URLs for a couple of reviews at the bottom of the message. R.E.M. was quite good (no surprise there, either, right?) and Stipe is still one odd puppy. *His* between song chatter was even less helpful than Sarah's - "Here's a song" was one intro... Apparently their upcoming album includes, to quote Michael, "the first love song they've ever written". It sounded really Beach Boys-like, so I'm looking forward to hearing the full-out produced version to see how far the likeness actually extends. Neil Young joined them onstage for "Country Feedback", which Michael claimed was his favorite R.E.M. song (but I've read that he changes his mind every so often about that, I think). Pretty cool. Phish I had never heard before, so their stuff was all new to me. While I did enjoy their harmonies (and could see how their music, like that of the Dead, probably sounds really good when you're stoned), the thing I'll probably remember most about their performance had to do with the fact that all four members of the band sat side by side at the front of the stage, instead of the more classic arrangement of drums in back, guitars in middle, singers in front, etc. I really liked that there was no "frontman" who got most of the attention. It gave the whole performance a different vibe, even before they started playing. And yes, Sarah came out near the end of their set and joined them for a really lovely version of Cat Stevens' "Sad Lisa" (you know, that "Lisa Lisa, sad Lisa Lisa" chorus). An odd combo, but it worked pretty well. Not quite as cool as the acappella "Water is Wide" with Sarah, Joan Baez and the Indigo Girls from Lilith Fair, but really tasty nonetheless. For the final song of the night, Neil Young came out and then they all did "I Shall Be Released" together. Which didn't really work, in my opinion. I don't think Neil and Sarah have very compatible voices, to say the least. Surely y'all can imagine - gives you the willies, doesn't it... But oh, what a show!! Now that I've surpassed the length of all my previous posts combined, I'd better do some actual work... Well I'm no expert on trip-hop and I'm not even sure if my recommendations really fall into this genre; more likely they'd just skirt the borders ... but they do have a fair bit of percussion :) So for what it's worth, here they are: Perfume Tree - Feeler Husiquesque - Green Blue Fire My Scarlet Life - Trypnotica __________________________________________________ There are two rules for ultimate success in life. 1.
