Yes, I was another of the lucky *Timelapse* winners at Happy's show in Troy. Too cool! This has been a hell of a weekend--I took two vacation days and saw Happy in Philadelphia, Troy, and this evening in NYC. I'm going to have such a back-to-the-grind hangover tomorrow--I'm sure "Wrong Century" will be going through my head all day. The rest of this will be just bits and pieces about each of the shows. I think Jeff Burka gave a pretty thorough rundown of the Philadelphia show, so I don't have much to add, except that I didn't like Tom Freund at all. You could count on two hands the non-cliched, non-hackneyed phrases in the lyrics of all the songs put together, and it all was sung with that surly, stopped-up-nose grunge tone that bores me silly. The other two shows didn't have opening acts. The Philadelphia show sold out, though not as early as when Marty posted--they were apparently still selling tickets at the door. Troy, on the other hand, was a much bigger hall--a classic concert hall with a balcony, as opposed to a theater space--and it wasn't very full. The Troy Music Hall also had the distinction of having even more uncomfortable seats than the folding chairs used at the Painted Bride. (I hear they don't want to reupholster the seats in the hall for fear of changing the acoustics. Fortunately they had cushions for rent in the lobby.) The El Flamingo in New York was a different kind of venue altogether: a two-level nightclubby affair, with small tables and a bar. The show went over surprisingly well in this space (given that it seems to be designed more as a concert hall affair), except for making it difficult to set up adequate lighting: e.g., either Kevin or Carl was always in the dark. At Philadelphia and Troy there were problems with the sound mix at the beginning of the show: you couldn't get Happy's voice over the percussion and other instruments in "Many Worlds Are Born Tonight" and "Cohabitants." I was particularly disappointed about "Cohabitants," because ever since it was discussed here and I went and pored over the lyrics, it has been one of my favorite songs and I never really thought I'd hear it live. Fortunately, in New York the problem didn't come up and "Cohabitants" sounded terrific. Regrettably, there were problems with the lights, video, and the second mike in all three shows, in various combinations and to various degrees. However, it really didn't diminish my enjoyment of the shows much--the music really rocked. Songs that I hadn't really given too much attention began to feel like old favorites that I'd known for years. It was magical. Happy didn't joke around at any of the shows the way she did at the Bearsville show. She did make the occasional sly comment, though, as in: "I hear they call me the Vulcan Vixen. I'm also known as Vlad." BTW: the two keyboard players who back Happy on vocals are, I believe, Paul Huseman and Jamie Edwards. Paul's the high-pitched one. Wow. The set list was pretty much the same for all three shows, except for the end: In Philadelphia, Happy ended with "100 Years" and then did "In Hiding" and "Serenading Genius" as encores. At Troy, she finished the show with "100 Years" and "Serenading Genius" and then did "In Hiding" as the encore. In NYC, she finished the show with "100 Years," "In Hiding" and "Serenading Genius" and took no encore. Good thing Vickie was alert and called for us to break out the glowsticks during "Serenading Genius"! The glowsticks were such a success at Philadelphia that Vickie handed out her remaining stock for the end of the Troy show. (Because of the long thin wrappers they come in, someone called them "ectoplasm jerky.") I went looking for more once I hit NYC so that we'd have something for the New York show as well. So I turned up with the glowsticks, and found that Vickie had one-upped me: she had found these little blinky red lights that you put on bicycles, a perfect audience counterpart to the LEDs that Happy has been wearing. So at the end of the show we had quite an array of audience lights from the ectophiles. Best T-shirt award goes to Vickie for hers this evening: "I ANNOYED GAFFA" - --someone from the audience approached her after the show and asked, "I know what Gaffa refers to, but what does that mean?" I got the reference, but what I hadn't noticed was that there's also a reference to it in the liner notes of MWABT. Besides winning a copy of the *Timelapse* game, I got to add another item to my list of missed opportunities to rescue the fair maiden. (The first one was at a Happy show at the Bottom Line a few years ago where she fumbled a verse from *Phobos*--a song I knew backwards and forwards--and looked down at me in the front row and said "come on, you know it..." and I drew a complete blank.) At one point tonight Happy asked for a throat lozenge, because the smoke (not cigarrette smoke, the smoke from the smoke machines to make the light beams show up) was bothering her throat. Wouldn't you know I had been carrying throat lozenges in my jacket pocket for quite awhile right up to when I left for the show, when I removed them thinking there was no reason I would possibly need them. Fortunately, someone else in the audience came through. Sorry to hear from TivoliDK@aol.com (who?) that they waited so long for Happy to sign posters after the Troy show. I had heard from Sharon before the show that they were going to call it off. Apparently Happy & co. had only arrived in Bearsville from Philadelphia at 4am, and still had to unload--and then after the Troy show they had the one in NYC the next day. Killer schedule. Happy was able to make it out to sign posters and CDs after the New York City show, though I know that's not much consolation if you weren't there. With luck there'll be an extended tour and you'll get another shot. I hope Kerry will get another shot too; that story he posted was really tragic. Vickie was looking for him in the concert hall and wondering why he wasn't there. He wrote, "Maybe my first row center seat was conspicuous by its emptiness" -- unfortunately there were a number of seats like this, since the Troy Music Hall Box Office lost my ticket (and apparently Ofer's and Natasha's too and some others) and we wound up being reseated further back. However, front row was not the ideal location in that hall: you'd have seen mainly feet. After the Troy show, someone from one of the local college newspapers came up to the ectophile gang (very noticeable since all the people holding glowsticks were standing around in one place) and asked lots of questions about Happy. She had a lot to learn: didn't know who Kate Bush was. I'm hoping that if she writes up an article she'll send me a copy and I'll pass it on. One of the terrific side benefits of these three days of shows was meeting lots of people I've only had contact with through the list. Though there are some historical precursors, it strikes me as something relatively new to be able to meet for the first time a whole group of people you already know. Carol Coney wrote about the dinner at Dinardo's in Philadelphia, and Tom Ditto mentioned the get together he, Chris, Vickie and I had in Troy; mainly Vickie and I just listened while Tom and Chris spun fascinating tales of multimedia production. Tom sure has had a hell of a lot of interesting experiences and really knows his stuff, and Chris is no slouch, either. And Kevin Bartlett still rules. I turned him on to Happy about three months ago, I sent him my copy of _Rhodesongs_. He loved it enough to go to the show, and he loved it. He talked with her afterwards and got her to sign a poster for me. Yipeee. He waited around so long at the upstairs bar for her that she called him a "lurker." I've been telling him about the Ectophiles. He figured that the group with the glow-thingys were the Ectofolk. In fact, he was sitting in the very front at a table, and says that he asked one of the women in the Ectogroup if she was the Ecto-mama. She said yes, she is. So, who is the Ecto-mama? Just curious. It's a great album full of great songs--but each of the songs sound like they would fit perfectly on any of the performer's solo albums. Each singer takes turns with the lead and one or two of the others do harmonizing, except on a couple of duets. However it is a great album. I particularly love Lucy and Dar singing the Nield's "I Know What Kind of Love This Is". Also picked up the latest Susan Werner album, Time Between Trains. I really like it--I was never really impressed with Last of the Good Straight Girls, though I loved her voice. The new album is much more varied in its style, but the best track is the final hidden track. It finally sounds like Susan is really having fun while she sings! Jeff Hanson n.r. Someone left the batteries in, some backwards, and it is a *mess*. This is a tape recorder that has some sentimental value that can't be easily replaced... one of those "sony walkmans" that has levels, dolby, etc. and cost several hundred $$$ in late 1980's money. Lesson number one. Why music is an industry of fake boobs, we'll never know. I guess because to people like us it is about being "touched" deeply in some way and to people like "them" it is about a million dollars a day. Guess who wins. On a happier note, so sorry to all that I have not written since my move from Portland Oregon to San Francisco, what with finding a place, jobs and lots of singing work, I have been so busy that I have just been saving the digests and this is the first I actually read! GUILT>>>Anyway, it looks like a good move for me, I have joined SF world-fusion-symphonic-rock band AZIGZA, sort of Kate Bush/Laurie A is fronting Zed Lepplin and they are playing a symphony in Turkey...haha...very interesting music!!! LAND OF THE BLIND is still my baby, I will tour up North for gigs with them and they will tour down here and I will play SF with them and thus, we will go on, long distance or no. In fact I have spent the whole summer mixing our new EP (which started with 2 songs, then 4 and now is 7!!!) On our first album I did a Jane cover (Calling all angels), on the second we tranced out a Black Sabbath cover (National Acrobat) and I was thinking that oh no, it's kinda a tradition now to do a weird or obsure cover each album but this one is very original, in fact for BLIND rather accoustic and stripped down, one celtic song for my mom (who just died) is only dulcimer, flute and me. BUT then my friend Rhan Wilson from SF's trance violin group THOTH (please see them anytime, absoutly amazing!) and I had done a "trance christmas album" called Altered Christmas with all traditional songs done in minor keys or oddly or even funny (I did a valley girl away in a manger, already offending folks without a sense of humor) but we also did an amazingly beautiful middle-eastern trance version of LITTLE DRUMMER BOY and he just gave me permission to put it on BLIND's new album!!!So another weird cover on the way. I am enjoying SF greatly, lots of recording work and great performers roll thru, I have seen Iva Bittova and Charming Hostess, which would be impossible in Portland. My love to all, Cyoakha PS Someone just told me I sounded like Sunday All Over the World, anyone out there heard of them? 3439 NE Sandy Blvd., Suite 266 Portland, Oregon USA (503) 321-5093 email lanblind@teleport.com http://www.teleport.com/~lanblind/ Distributed through: "Out of Chaos"-- Burnside Distribution "One Eye"-- Rainforest Records ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #366 **************************
