So glad you now possess MWABT. It's been pretty much a permanent fixture on my player ever since I received it myself. [Mind you, after stating that, I must confess that I have gone retro this evening and am listening to Jane Siberry's "The Walking"] Re your comment about "Roy" - Now I may be coming from way left of centre here but I am wondering if it was released as a single due to Samson seeing it as being the most "accessable" track for all those malcontents who had never had the good fortune of being exposed to Happy's creativity before. Okay, okay, it's only a wild theory, but I say this due to an experience I had recently. I was hooning up over Peachster Range and wanted to distract my passenger from my cornering technique. I thought I would take the opportunity to introduce her to Happy as a diversion. She enjoyed what she heard, but was especially impressed with the first hearing of "Roy". [I was surprised as "Roy" hadn't been my own first pick, but there you go.] Hell, I don't know if that's any kind of proof, but at least I've created another Happy fan. [Was almost an "And now my work here is done" situation.] Anybody else got any theories? So, if there's anybody on the list who could help me with getting a copy, I'd really appreciate it. And now... I just can't help letting out that I'm terribly envious of all of you people who've been seeing those Happy shows lately... anyway, thanks for the reviews! Well, at least I did get to see Mary Coughlan a second time a while back, so I'm not feeling all bad about my lack of concert experiences. Unlike the first show (an all-seated theatre), this one was in a club, which would have suited the music very well, too, if only the organizers hadn't been as moronic as they were. Insanely, there was some very noisy rock band playing in the next room, with only a(n obviously way too) thin wall in between... Mary's music was occasionally drowned out during the quieter parts... it was beyond annoying. Despite that, Mary and the band completed their set beautifully, seemed to enjoy themselves, and came back two times for encores (even though these were disturbed by the other band as well). Wow. She really made me forget I'm not supposed to like that kind of music. The huge, soft, black-and-green Viking helmet she wore when coming on stage looked pretty ridiculous, though. ;) I managed to talk my way backstage after the performance for an autograph and a brief chat with the lady herself, who was, as I arrived, busy etching her name into history by writing it on a wall. Vickie and Charley: I took the liberty of delivering your greetings to Mary; they reached her and were well received. She remembered Vickie's bags, and indeed said that she had them with her on this very tour. And she told me to greet you back, so: "Hello!" That's it for now, I guess. Juha n.p. There was a momentary scare that I might be unable to buy my ticket, but I got some reassurance from a Burns guard who was watching the stage door. As I stood there Carl and Jaime came out asking for directions to a restaurant. I led them around the corner on a wild goose chase looking for Allegro's which was purported (same Burns guard) to provide free meals to Troy Music Hall artists. I joked that wild goose was a excellent dish. They took refuge in a Canton Canteen. On my return I found the box office open and went upstairs. I had been assigned a seat in a crowded front section, so after some chit chat, I went up to the balcony which was deserted. Up to visit came Vickie who gave me the mandatory glow tube. It came in handy a while later when Chris and I went searching for a power outlet for his camera. He had a great angle and the sound quality was magnificent. "3 CCD's" he said with paternal pride of his Canon. It is also DVC. He has the goods. It was a world class concert in a world class hall. Where was the world? Maybe there were 300 people. Happy thanked us for coming. A little later it dawned on her how few of us there were. She quipped about being unpopular, but despite the small turnout and her evident exhaustion, she put on a GREAT performance. We were blessed. Same songs as Bearsville and Philly... slightly different order. Knowing that an encore was in the offing, she held In Hiding for the final bow. Although the piano was acoustical, my wishes were not on horseback. She used a mike. Afterwards, Paul, Chris and Vickie took a ride with me to an Albany late night restaurant. It was astonishing how much the four of us have in common beyond our love of Happy's music. Perhaps the flock is all the same species. Tom ditto@taconic.net "Do you copy? This may be a little "bug" in their system, but hey, why not take advantage of it until they realize their mistake? What ya do is go to a search engine...I used Infoseek (thrice, I might add.) Type into the search box these words "Music CD". (Do not click on the Music Blvd link that appears on the homepage if you want the discount!) When you type in those words (Music CD) and click on the start search button, a banner ad (not really an icon, as I had said previously) will appear in just about the same place on screen, with a grafic of a gift box, and a saying something like "A present from one music fan to another...$10 off". All you do is click on that banner ad and it will take you to Music Blvd. & will factor in your $10.00 discount when your bill is tallied. Happy shopping! Just a great vibe all around. I heard that I missed meeting a few ectophiles (I guess from Philly) who were also at the show...I guess you were the other ones waving the light tubes up above our rows! Anyway, I didn't write a song list down, but it sounds like all the tracks from MWABT were played, along with Down, Feed the Fire, and one other oldie but goodie up near the front of the show, maybe the second or third song. Anyone know? The band sounded great! All the playing was excellent, and the backup singer/keyboardist was really complimentary to Happy. Kevin's solo was very pretty & I wish we had applauded him, as he was spotlighted. Happy looked fantastic! As a gal I hope no one will call me "sexist" when I say that she is one hot Philly (oops, I mean filly)...she has a better tummy than Renee O'Connor (Gabrielle on Xena tv show)! Now all she needs is a little navel ring...or a nice tattoo that encircles her belly button. It doesn't hurt, really...just a little dehydrating during the process. Talking from experience now! :-) Anyway, A+ for costuming. (Can anyone tell me what she wears the rest of the shows?) OK, my main disappointment was the lack of talk and comedy referred to in the Bearsville review. I love funny stuff...maybe she thought we were a little dense 'cause we were slow to react to the Austin Powers/Dr. Evil reference (maybe she was testing the waters and we flunked.) Or, maybe, and I hope not, she was bummed at the dual-screen projection difficulties. Whew...the screens with the video were pretty bad, and I guess after Bearsville she thought they'd be smoothed out. Too bad. I don't know if the same a/v people were in charge of all the shows, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to feed video black into your vcr inputs so that when you lose synch or a screen otherwise goes down, you don't have "No signal" and "NTSC video" msgs beaming from the wall. Black is better...or how about defaulting to that album cover art with the energy-pulsing orb in Happy's hands. I've been doing video for 20 years and there have been a few multi-screen projects in my past too, and it's just awful when there are those kind of mistakes and you don't have a way to control them (which Happy couldn't since she was busy singing and dancing.) If I remember correctly, the only ones that worked at all were the projections for "Looking Over Cliffs" and to some extent "100 Years" (and "Tragic", although the video conceptions didn't do anything for me.) If there were a lot more shows lined up I'd advise scrapping the screens or just keep the Happy album cover one. Or quick hire an a/v person who works at a museum or media art center who has worked with Nam June Paik installations...ya know, someone who can rig up multi-screen blindfolded. Hmmm, what else. Happy seemed distracted, probably due to the problems with the screens. She has so much creative energy that apparently has been bottled up inside, wanting to try her hand at filmmaking and multimedia, but the first experiment was disappointing to say the least. (I know that heartbreak...but welcome to the world of video, Happy. It's a world fraught with potential problems and challenges. And some fun along the way too.) The lighting was pretty nice considering that it was kinda low to maintain visibility of the rear-screen stuff. It was a real challenge trying to shoot photos whenever the spot found Happy or she happened to step into it. Now I wish I were able to go to another show so I could really appreciate the music and Happy's showmanship, rather than fiddling with my camera in the dark. I guess that's it for now...I gotta hear a report on Kriston's motorcycle repairing (we're both playing hooky today 'cause we're burned out from too little sleep!) Carol P.S. My weekend best ofs: Best hug: Vickie Best license plate: Tony Best tummy: Happy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Oct 1998 10:44:26 +1000 From: Andrew Fries Subject: Roy and more sighs of relief :) In a message "Re: MWABT - sigh of relief" on 13/Oct/1998 10:46:59 Sue Fechner says: > Re your comment about "Roy" - Now I may be coming from way left of centre here > but I am wondering if it was released as a single due to Samson seeing it as > being the most "accessable" track I agree, that's probably how Samson see it. Perhaps they are right - I can't speak for the public at large. All I can say is that if that was *my* first exposure, it would probably remain my last. What is the consensus about "Roy" on our list? Could we have a quick show of hands? But I feel that the importance of having a single is a bit over rated anyway. There was no single from "Tubular Bells" and it still shifted a couple of millions of copies... What I'm trying to say is, the single is an utilitarian format, well suited to pop songs but pretty useless otherwise. And I don't think Happy would fit comfortably in the "3-minute pop" category :) Now to other things... "more sighs of relief" relates to my 3 Cat Power CDs, which you might recall I ordered sight-unseen. OK, the earliest one, "Myra Lee" doesn't set me on fire - some tracks have a feel of someone with a lot of enthusiasm (if not ability) just sitting in their kitchen and learning to play the guitar... But the later two disks would prove this asessment wrong. She has something... "Moon Pix" (her latest) is my favourite for now. I file her CDs under "late night music". Slowcore. Sparse. Whatever... Special note for Tim Finney - I remember your references to Arrosa and Paradise Motel and I thought Cat Power might be something of interest to you. Finally, the last disk from that shippment - Lisa Germano's "Slide"... Kicks butt! I thought her previous one was a bit lacklustre, but she makes a great comeback with "Slide". The arrangements are richer this time around, more musical, more flowing. Some new sounds I haven't heard from her before, and slightly lighter overall feeling. I really like this one! __________________________________________________ There are two rules for ultimate success in life. 1. Mebbe she'll bring her show to Boston- that I could probably swing. Pretty please with ectoplasm on it Samson?? So, instead, I report on Patty Griffin's first show in her native Maine since Raoul's closed, October 10 at Stone Coast Brewery in Portland. Oh man... major disappointment. First off, Stone Coast has got to be one of the WORST venues for seeing ANYBODY: Clueless staff (we were told Patty would be on at 8pm, no opening act: Outright lie- she came on at 9:35pm, 1 hour after some garage band left the stage), mediocre food, unreasonable delays (yeah, I know they wanna sell more booze, but couldn't they at least turn the lights on during the interminable delays between shows so we can maybe see the damn burgers that arrived 1-1/4 hours after we ordered them?), L-O-U-S-Y acoustics, and seating that would give sardines the jitters. I had planned to catch The Nields here next week, but I'm wondering if I really want to subject myself to this bullshit again, despite my appreciation for one of the niftiest bands around. But I REALLY wish Patty would stop trying to be a >rock singer< and strap the guitar back on- She stood guitarless in front of the mic for about 2/3 of the show with her arms and fingers flailing awkwardly, dredging up unfortunate memories of Joe Cocker in his early days. When she hung a guitar around her neck for _Flaming Red_ 5 songs into the set, she finally seemed comfortable and she looked like she was really into it, head whipping back and forth as her incredible voice did it's best to rise above the decibles generated by her very very loud (and not particularly good) band. Her acoustic singer/songwriter turn with the band offstage would have been wonderful but for about 50 or so drunks at the bar in the back of the room who were oblivious to her performance and were apparently totally caught up in how cool they were as they guffawed loudly at each other's (and their own) presumed witticisms. Numerous people in the cattle pens up front (including us) turned around and glared at them, but did the Stone Coast bouncers tell them to shut the fuck up? Nah. Alas, Patty spent most of the rest of the set without the guitar, including the riveting _Wiggley Fingers_, being drowned out by the sheer volume of her band. I LOVE Patty Griffin: I think she has one of the most distinctive and dynamic voices of all the girl singers around, and I'm aware that she was probably deeply affected by the hospitalization that night of her manager (I think it was her manager), but she really needs to work on her stage presence. That being said, I would drop everything to see her again, anyplace but in *this* hole. One more thing: Her first encore, she did the blues standard "Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody's Home" which just blew us away- Gawd, the girl can *really* sing the blues! Please Patty, get some musicians who are worthy of your talents..... and I think your best moments were when you did your own rhythm guitar and you seemed liberated from the tyranny of The Microphone. My two cents. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Oct 1998 21:45:08 -0600 From: neal copperman Subject: The McGarrigle Hour I got a postcard today from Rykodisc with vague hints about some pretty intriguing music.
