Its kind of embarrasing, but that's me. What can I say. At Bearsville, I was in the 2nd row, on the aisle, on the right (from the audience perspective). I was alone (a nice young lady who works at Nevessa studio eventually came by and sat next to me). I was kinda looking for you & woj, since I knew you were CT folks, and I've been to your little web site and saw pictures but couldn't place you in the crowd that nite - not enuf to walk up and say hi I'm fog. Shoulda tried, I know, but... I'm shy. I'm also very used to doing these type of things (attending shows) entirely on my own. Such is the fate of the fogmeister... I'm goin' to the Troy show, alone agin, I took two tickets in an act of absurd optimism but it looks like my guest seat will be unfilled as usual. Oh well. Last May I was facing that with Loreena tickets, but I cajoled a friend at the last minute (those were $50 a seat tix though. These are $15). Anyone need a ticket? I'm allegedly 2nd row center for this one too... Meth & Woj, I think its our karma to meet but I just don't know when... don't cha know. Fog Aka Mike ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 03:30:50 -0400 From: "Jeffrey C. Burka" Subject: the Philly Show The bad news: the technical glitches still aren't completely worked out. The good news: what a farquin' incredible show! 'Twas much as the Bearsville folks reported. At this point, and at this level of exhaustion, I know I won't get a set list order correct, but: MWABT Winter Cohabitants Proof Down, Down Ra Is A Busy God Looking Over Cliffs The Chariot Tragic Roy If Wishes... Feed the Fire 100 Years *encores In Hiding Serenading Genius Actually, I know there are major mistakes in there. Oh well, sorry. The main technical glitch this time around was that the video screen on the right side wasn't working. This was especially depressing on _Roy_, when the screens were meant to be showing halves of symmetrical images, particularly these fabulous images, mostly heavily processed, of eyes (tying in of course, with the unprinted lyrics about "I'm afraid to close my eyes...") Both screens were operating and perfectly synched for the first several songs, before the right screen died. Eventually they managed to get it working again, and things were fabulous. Happy was clearly displeased with the way things were going, and did not contribute her normal degree of witty banter. Still, she proceeded gamely, and presented her usual fabulous show. As meth sez, getting to hear her perform "Looking Over Cliffs" live was a definite high point, as was "Cohabitants," which had fabulous visuals. The use of the smoke machines on "Winter" was great too, and in fact, I enjoyed all of the lighting (both from the mounted lights and from those worn by Happy and other band members in the form of LEDs). Once again, the ectophiles prevailed, and I was the lucky winner of one of the 3 copies of _Timelapse_ given away. Dunno how it was done at Bearsville, but in Philly, before playing "100 Years", Happy said something like, "Please bring up the lights. Okay. This ought to be fun. Everybody look under your seats. Under 3 of them are taped passes. If you find one, let me know." And, as with meth's copy, Happy seemed to indicate that these were mac discs, but mine turned out to be windows... And now I can finally say I've been on stage with Happy Rhodes. WOO HOO! And finally: Many of you probably wondered what Vickie's secret plan was for the show. She had purchased a big bag of little cyalume light sticks, all different colors, and wanted us to wave them while the audience screamed for an encore. She had bought tons, so most of us took two, and as Happy left the stage, we pulled 'em out, cracked the ampules, and started waving 'em. The smile on Happy's face as she came out and saw us all with them, scattered throughout the audience, was priceless -- it was as if we were making up for the technical glitches, and making the evening fun for her. She made some funny comment about "All the glowing fireflies hovering in the audience," but it was clear that she appreciated what we were doing. All told, it was a great show, though perhaps not the best I've seen. I think that once all the technical bits and pieces are worked out, it's going to be mindblowing. Oh, and one final note: between the opening act (Todd Freund, who was enjoyable, though not overly memorable), Happy played all sorts of great stuff over the sound system, including a track by Bjork (I think from _Homogenic_), "And Dream of Sheep," and Bowie's original "Ashes to Ashes." Some of the best pre-show-setup music I've heard (my previous fave was probably Sarah playing Gorecki's Symphony #3 before the show on the first leg of the Fumbling tour). and now I must sleep. desperately. jeff - -- |Jeffrey C. Yes, I understand that it's the earliest part of the whole work and thus it makes sense chronologically to read it first...but much of it was written very early in this century and in a deliberately archaic (even for then) style. I strongly recommend reading =The Hobbit= and =The Lord of the Rings= before tackling =The Silmarillion=; there is nothing in the latter you need to know before you read the others. Basically, =The Silmarillion= is myth, not fiction, if you care to make the distinction that way. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 09:03:14 EDT From: Pieohpah5@aol.com Subject: ecto 362 question hey does anyone still have ecto #362..if so could some one email it to me..deleted by mistake..did not get to read it..thanks..pieohpah5@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 09:10:53 EDT From: Pieohpah5@aol.com Subject: Re: bearsville redeux Hey Meredith...pieohpah5 here...kev and I were sitting in front row..first 2 seats ..you must have been behind us..kev was the one who clapped when she said she was going to sing tragic..gonna miss the ny show but going to troy tonight 4th row center..A friedn told us that is her favorite place to see shows..cant wait to go....you were right about the space between songs..could of gotten into more if all together..but hey it was Happy and free.....glad the game was windows because i have a mac and was disappointed that i didnt get one..enjoy the ny show... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 09:49:42 -0400 From: Jeff Wasilko Subject: Re: ecto 362 question On Mon, Oct 12, 1998 at 09:03:14AM -0400, Pieohpah5@aol.com wrote: > hey does anyone still have ecto #362..if so could some one email it to > me..deleted by mistake..did not get to read it..thanks..pieohpah5@aol.com You can get it via the web at http://www.smoe.org/lists or you can use majordomo to retrieve it. - -jeff ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 11:33:17 -0600 From: Sharon Nichols Subject: Review....? I can't recall which song the images were used in. 'Twas later in the show, I know, because I remember the first image that caught my eye being on the right-hand video screen after it started working again. It might have been during "100 Years." Anyway, I did a major double-take when I recoginzed a computer graphic circa '86 or '87, which would probably be recognizable to just about anybody who was into the old atari 8-bit computers. I was going crazy trying to come up with the name of the artist, but all I could manage was "Darryl". Several of his pieces were used in the show... Fortunately, Happy ran closing credits on the video system during "Serenading Genius" and of course I recognized the name Darryl Anderson as the artist I was looking for. It was really neat seeing Darryl's work again after so long! Jeff - -- |Jeffrey C. Apparently tomorrow is "WFUV Member's Night" at the El Flamingo. Audra, who has won three Tony awards for her work in musicals (most recently in Ragtime), has a gorgeous mezzo voice, and some of the more esoteric songs remind me of Emily Bezar... really worth listening to, even if you aren't generally into the musical form - her voice is very classical in sound, and the music is sweeping and gorgeous. Good luck trying to hear it, depending upon where you live.... out here, the big fat NPR/PRI outlet is WSHU-FM (Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, CT.). Yeah, they do play _Hearts of Space_ and PRI's _Echoes_, as well as straight folk on Saturday nights. But they seem more at home with their classical music library and NPR's _Performance Today_. CLB's next album will be an independantly released CD recorded at the San Francisco LRT performance earlier this year. Recorded on 1/9/98, this particular show was unique among all the LRT gigs that Cindy Lee has participated in. On this particular show, she was accompanied by the extraordinary ex-Garage Orchestra cellist Renatta Bratt. It was a reunion of sorts because CLB & Renatta hadn't performed together in almost two years. I can testify there was a great spontaneous energy hapnin that night & these performances will definately delight all CLB fans. The CD will include several stripped down versions of Garage Orchestra favorites, vintage songs from her anti-folk days,as well as brand new material. And of course a healthy dose of LRT hilarity. The tracklist will be: 1. Diane 2. She Had Everything 3. Family Tree 4. Damn, I Wish I Was a Man 5. This Way Up 6. UFO Suite 7. Witness 8. I Wonder Why 9. Look at That Grin 10. Gary Handeman 11. Every SomeoneTonight The title of this CD will simply be "Living Room 16" as this was the 16th LRT gig (out of almost 50 LRT gigs featuring many other artists too) since we began all this, two summers ago. This CD will be available through direct mail order in North America & although I don't have the info yet, a European distributer will release it over there as well. The CD itself is mastered & the artwork is really all thats left to do at this point. All Cindy Lee Berryhill fans will love these performances & it'll provide many more people with a taste of the Living Room Tour. I'll keep you updated as release day approaches. It should be fairly soon. OK, so it took me a while but finally I got my copy of Many Worlds Are Born Tonight. These are only first impressions because I just finished playing it for the first time but I think I can already let out a deep sigh of relief - I love it! Now for an explanation/confession: just like most people here I admire HappyÕs voice and songwriting, but I often feel let down by the production and instrumentation. Sometimes I feel like I have to dig for the gems I *know* are there, buried under all these incredibly cheesy keyboards, these awful drum machines... Thank God, my prayers have been answered - on MWABT this casiotone vibe is almost totally absent and I can finally get down to the business of enjoying the music without being reminded of New Order, Devo and other ÒhighlightsÓ of the 80s that IÕd rather forget (with apologies to any fans of New Order and Devo) In light of what I said you might understand why my one problem on this album is ÒRoyÓ... So, this is the single? To me it seems a cut below everything else here... But apart from this one track, my first impression is that this rates as HappyÕs best non acoustic effort ever! __________________________________________________ There are two rules for ultimate success in life. 1.
