ANN'S PREMIERES NEW SERIES VOICES ON THE VERGE @ THE BACKSTAGE CAFE WITH MARTHA WAINWRIGHT AND LIANNE SMITH ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22 In collaboration with record companies, radio personalities and music-minded friends and neighbors, Arts at St. Ann's presents the debut of an all-new showcase series for emerging artists, Voices on the Verge, on Thursday, October 22 at 7:30 p.m. This series will be held in the informal setting of the Backstage Café, and the ticket price will include a drink on the house. For its debut offering, Voices on the Verge and Nicholas Hill, longtime host of WFMU's "Music Faucet," present a double bill of two unique and distinctive singer-songwriters, Martha Wainwright and Lianne Smith. Martha Wainwright is the latest arrival of the musical Wainwright clan, the daughter of Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle and the sister of Rufus Wainwright. On the occasion of Martha's New York debut at the Bottom Line in December 1997, Ann Powers wrote in the New York Times, "The folk tradition she mined is a feminine one: like Jane Siberry, Laura Nyro, and her own mother and aunt, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Ms. Wainwright expanded the song form to bring the listener inside her experience of the everyday world. Her skills were evident in the supple drawl of her vocals, and her knack for exuding emotion while simultaneously standing back and examining it. Hers was an auspicious debut." Williamsburg's own Lianne Smith, one of the most talented singer-songwriters in New York, has until recently been something of a well-kept secret. But a recent feature story in New York Magazine ("Listening to Lianne Smith is like having your soul rubbed down with velvet.") as well as praise from the New York Press and Time Out New York and a growing legion of fans who follow her from The Fez to CB's Gallery to the Living Room and other venues suggest her star is decidedly on the rise. Her compelling, conversational songs showcase a voice that is at once lithe, sensual, at times melancholic, tender and above all robust, and she commands a rhythmic, reverb-packed sound on electric guitar. Joining Lianne on bass is Neill C. Furio, a solo artist in his own right who has been working with Smith for a year and a half. The St. Ann Center for Restoration and the Arts, Inc. was founded in 1983 to preserve the National Historical Landmark Church of St. Ann and the Holy Trinity as a house of worship, a showcase for America's first stained glass windows, and a downtown cultural center. Arts at St. Ann's has received consistent and unanimous praise from audiences, artists and critics alike for its daring programming, championing worthy and eclectic artists and artforms from avant rock to opera, jazz to puppet theater, blues to folk musics of the world. Martha Wainwright and Lianne Smith will perform at the Backstage Café at St. Ann's Church on Thursday, October 22 at 7:30 p.m. St. Ann's Church is located at the corner of Clinton and Montague Streets in Brooklyn Heights (Court Street / Borough Hall Stations on the #2, 3, 4, 5, N & R subway lines) Tickets are $10, available through the St. Ann's box office, open Tues.-Sat. 12-6 p.m. For information about subscriptions and group discounts, call the box office at 718-858-2424. EXCELLENT show!... the only negtive being the crowd gathered around the bar who couldn't keep from talking throughout both band's sets. why on earth would somebody pay $20 to get in for the show, and then spend their time ignoring the music and causing general aural discomfort for those intent on listening? anyhow, the first thing to happen when we arrived was jeff, meth and i mobbing the t-shirt/cd table, madly scooping up copies of otr's holiday and good dog bad dog cds...on first listen gdbd is really good! over the rhine were brilliant! i'd never seen them before, but have wanted to for years, and they certainly didn't disappoint. their set consisted mostly of songs from good dog bad dog, along with several they apparently haven't recorded yet. i didn't recognize anything as being from patience, eve or till we have faces, though i do remember them playing all i need is everything and poughkeepsie, which of course was quite appropriate ;-} karen berquist's lovely voice also added an extra dimension to the junkies set as well. the cowboy junkies set was: no birds today hunted crescent moon blue guitar sun comes up, it's tuesday morning a common disaster just want to see bea's song something more besides you anniversary song darkling days miles from our home good friday sweet jane blue moon revisited encores: a horse in the country me and the devil one of the most unique-sounding bands around, the cowboy junkies lived up to their rep as a great live act. by at times incorporating various members of over the rhine and the immensely talented jeff bird into their lineup, they were able to cover the many varied facets of their recording career. margo timmins was in exquisite voice, at times languid and bittersweet, and at times smoky and husky and determined as on their phenomenal cover of robert johnson's me and the devil (a set highlight, which allowed the musicians to stretch their chops a bit, gradually building the song into a barely-controlled frenzy). lazily draping herself over the microphone, margo gave a powerful performance, expertly communicating the depths of emotion in her brother's wonderful lyric-writing. a major joy of the show was hearing the oft-overlooked talent of michaell timmins as a guitarist. his sitar-like spiraling of notes on the extended solos he did on blue guitar and me and the devil was extraordinary. as their set was wrapping up, margo asked the crowd if they'd like to stick around and chat with her, and that she'd be happy to sign autographs or answer any questions- a very cool thing to do! speaking to her after the show, she noted that they'd be touring extensively again next summer. by all means catch them if they're near you- it's well worth seeing these folks live! all in all it was yet another fantastic show this week! next up: happy again! chuck np: over the rhine- good dog bad dog nr: nothing ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Oct 1998 16:34:57 -0400 From: Michael Curry Subject: Sinead Lohan/Iris Dement concert reviews Hi all, Last night I went to see Sinead Lohan perform at the Iron Horse Music Hal in Northampton, MA, and was as impressed as the other who have spoken about her on the list recently. Despite the fact that the sound was as bad as I have ever heard it at an Iron Horse show, Sinead put on a very good performance and I'd certainly go see her again. As for her opening act, Jude, I must say that I didn't find him nearly as annoying as I was worried I might. I wasn't motivated to buy his CD, but I also won't go out of my way to avoid him if I see him opening for some other act I want to see. The show I really want to talk about though is Iris Dement's performance at the Iron Horse about a week ago (on October 4th). Before I went to the concert my total exposure to her music had consisted of the six songs she performed on Austic City Limits a few years ago. I had been really impressed by it, but had never gotten around to buying any of her CDs (a mistake I will now rectify). I decided to go see Iris at the Iron Horse mainly because I was curious, and my curiousity was well rewarded (to say the least). Iris put on an absolutely brilliant performance, blowing me away with her voice, her songwriting skills and her stage presence. She played a long set (about 2 hours, including a two song encore) and it was absolutely amazing from end to end. Iris got mad at herself because her voice wasn't living up to her expectations, but if what I heard was less that 100% then I can't even imagine how good she must sound when she'd completely healthy. Despite my limited knowledge of her songs I was utterly captivated all the way through the show. To make things even better she had the perfect opening act in Kate Jacobs. Kate's sweet, simple songs about her family and the place she grew up were well received by the audience and I think she made more than a few new fans. Iris, of course, is already a fan. I am still amazed with how smoothly it ran, what with 12 or so different permutations and combinations of most of the people who performed tracks on the album appearing. Each group did their (or someone else's) Kate song plus a couple of their own songs. I have lived in Chicago for 8 years and admit to never really ever having gone out of my way to get into the local music scene... I am familiar with lots of the names just from going to shows of mostly out-of-town artists that I like and the odd person might open. And of course from reading the local arts rags. But this seemed to me like a pretty good cross-section of local talent which I might very well seek out in the future. To this end, the monumental Kate cover project that Tom undertook has served at least a double purpose and I am grateful. What more could I ask for in terms of "show local artists who have at least some or at best lots of Kate sensibility" since KT has always been the center of my musical locus (well, at least since the mid-80's when I discovered her music). The unqualifiedly most moving moment of the evening was when Tom himself performed Not this time ("The best kate song ever" according to him :-) with a supporting cast of thousands. Other hilights for me were the string ensemble (2 cellos, 2 violins, a viola) And dream of sheep (when's the last time you saw a string quintet in a bar??!), and Nora O'Connor's cover of Saxophone song (also with lots of supporting musicians). And I enjoyed the (mostly) a cappella musings of Plunging necklines (a cappella is one of my major weaknesses -- and avocations). But in all, it was the magnitude of the feat and the synthesis of the moment that made for me a joyous evening and what may well be the closest I ever get to seeing a "Kate Bush concert." And what it underscored even more tellingly was how easy it would be for Kate herself to put together a tour and reclaim her live diva status. But we already knew that. - -mjm PS. Great seeing C&V again finally! You guys are *still* great! PPS. Someone should feel free to crosspost this to gaffa, if they wish... it's been a *long* time since I've read that list, but for me, it's where it **ALL** started *over* ten years ago!
