There was such good response yesterday that Joy may consider another small run made if requests warrant it. Ok here's all the info: I know we have several Joy Eden Harrison fans here, especially after so many East Coast people caught her on the 98 Living Room Tour. For those interested in purchasing the pre-release cassette of her new album (to be released early next year & as yet still untitled), drop me an email & I'll forward you details. Joy has a limited supply of these limited edition tapes left over from the LRT & you can mail order directly from her while they last. The tapes are $12 including shipping & handling. The tapes are proffessional advance production cassettes with photographic jcards, credits, etc. For those unfamiliar with all the hoo-hah surrounding this album, its a major leap forward from her critically acclaimed first album "Angel Town" while staying true to her jazz roots. The songs are more engaging than that first album, in my opinion, & the musicians on it all put on great performances. (I absolutely love it, if you can't tell!) Cindy Lee Berryhill sat in the producers chair & arranged the incredible string parts played by Garage Orchestra cellist Renatta Bratt & a small string section. I highly recommend this album to all who have enjoyed Joy's music in the past & I know many more will become enamored with her soon. Drop me a line if interested & I'll send you the direct ordering info. PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR FULL NAME IN YOUR REPLY. I will forward all requests to Joy, who is setting a tape aside for each person interested. This way she can stop taking requests when all the tapes are spoken for. Also, please follow through quickly if you do want the tape as there is a limited quantity & someone else can enjoy it if you decide not to follow through. The official release of this album will be early next year, so get it now while you can, if interested, directly from Joy. Tracklisting & musician info follows. He reaches for it effortlessly and makes it sound pure. Well, just goes to show ya how two ectophiles can see things differently. I really disliked Jude...and I do like lots of male vocalists! Unlike Happy who switches "voices" effortlessly mid-song, then back again, Jude started every song tenor-voiced, ended them all with falsetto choruses. Drove me nuts. And the lyrics seemed to be mostly those horny-guy-angst kinda things I never like (but maybe I'm just too old or too female to appreciate the sentiments.) Anyway, no offense to Mr. Kim but I just don't agree with you on Jude...but folks will be able to make their own judgements when they go to see Sinead, who is wonderful indeed. > He brought up an electric bassist for most of his songs and played electric > guitar on about half of them...he said that he's influenced by marvin gaye > and curtis mayfield... Could have fooled me. I almost laffed when he announced this to our audience. I grew up on Motown & still like more soul/r & b/urban than most people I know...and I saw no similarity to Marvin Gaye or Curtis Mayfield, or Sam Cooke whom Jude mentioned here in Atlanta. (Of course it is also cool these days to say you're influenced by the greats of soul music. The only white guy who ever said that kind of thing who I half believed was Bono, the first time I saw U2, in a little venue in Pittsburgh, ages ago it seems.) > Sinead played with a full band (her on acoustic, a bassist, a drummer with > some drum loops, a keyboardist, and a lead electric). I haven't posted the review but I'll have to dig it up...I remember that "Winter" struck me as a song that would be perfect for an Olympic figure skater to perform to, because of the high drama of the song, the tempo changes, and of course, the song reminded me ice (and therefore ice-skating.) I would love to see someone like Michelle Kwan perform to it. For anyone who hasn't done so yet, listen to MWABT in a good pair of headphones. Please do - I'd be very interested to read it. An interesting game one can play with MWABT is "spot the influence". The most obvious track for this is "Seranading Genuis" (ELO anyone?), but I can hear things sometimes that early post-Genesis Peter Gabriel might have used. At the same time, it is clear that Happy is "tipping the hat" at her heros, while also allowing her own creativity to reign supreme. > For anyone who hasn't done so yet, listen to MWABT in a good pair of > headphones. As impersonal as it may seem, I have had to resort to writing all of you back with one letter. It's something I never wanted to do. I wanted to be very that very accessible artist who has a personal relationship with everyone, and heck, I still want to be that way. It's just that there are so damn many of you now, I just cannot keep up. I'm especially overwhelmed these days because I've actually begun work on the next CD, and as most of you know, I need to be entirely hands-on in the studio. There won't be anything on the CD, from drums to bass lines to EQ's, that I haven't personalized. And all of that, combined with writing the songs, the show biz politics - oh yeah - and eating and sleeping (a little), leave me with brains of jelly when it comes to simple tasks - like letter writing, driving, banking and speaking! For those of you who have contacted me from territories where my CD is not available, my webmaster - Andrew- has set up a link from my site to the site of "CD Plus", an on-line CD store. For those of you who want to know when my new CD will be out - it's hard to say. I want it to be stupendous, and stupendous takes time. So keep listening to "Angels and Ordinary Men" - for now - maybe you should try listening to it backwards - for some variety, in case you've gotten tired of any tracks, and just know that the recording has begun on CD#2 - release date unknown at this time due to perfectionism! As for gigs - I'm not really concentrating on any out of studio musical experiences right now. I am doing a very cool gig on Oct. 22nd called "The 1998 Modern Woman Celebration of Sisters". It's an event held at the Royal York Hotel Concert Hall in Toronto to celebrate Sisterhood and womanhood and all things girlie!!! I can't wait! But, before anyone tries to get tickets - I must tell you I think it's private, an invitation only kind of thing. I do hope this letter doesn't feel like some dumb form letter - `cause it's not. I'm talking directly to all of you - Charettes, Tabatha, K.K., Adrian and everyone! Bye for Now.. I'm very curious about something, and I wonder if folks on this list would participate in a little "readers' survey". I know this may have been done before, and ya'll "old-timers" may be tired of answering such questions. But in the wake of the release of MWABT and some newbies on ecto-list, I think it would be nice to get a current "snapshot" of Happy's fans here on ecto. Hopefully you'll bear with me & fill out the user friendly form below! You may respond to me privately, and I'll tally and post results to the entire ecto-list. Question: How and when did you first hear (and purchase) the music of Happy Rhodes? ____X______ Heard on radio Summer of '94 on WPKN. Bought Rhodesongs that week, rest of catalog the following week (cleaned out Brass City's HR bin). __________ Heard about via an internet source (Please specify website, newsgroup, bulletin board, chat, e-pal/email, other) __________ Heard via a "sampler tape" made for me by a friend __________ Heard at a record store's listening station __________ Saw a display ad in a music magazine __________ Other Where do you live? _Woodbury CT_ Your age? _42_ Your gender? The best email addy to use indefinitely is: ckconey@catgoddess.com...unless you can reply to this survey quickly (in which case, just select "reply to sender".) Even the little "OK..." before the 1st verse reminds me of something by Laurie that I can't place right now... from "Strange Angels", I think. We know David Bowie is a Happy influence. I find the bridge "I was young I was free..." sounds like Happy briefly out-Bowie-ing Bowie. Classic Bowie at that... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Oct 1998 12:50:34 +1000 From: Andrew Fries Subject: Re: Fwd: Email from wendylands.com In a message "Fwd: Email from wendylands.com" on 08/Oct/1998 12:06:26 Riphug@aol.com says: > If you don't have Wendy Lands' "Angels and Ordinary Men" in your cd > collection......you MUST!!!! Well, OK - if I must... but could you first tell me something about her music :) I just visited her site but couldn't find any sounds. Her website looked interesting though - I'd like to learn more. __________________________________________________ There are two rules for ultimate success in life. 1.
