In fact, most of my experiences with Projekt have been fairly mediocre, though I'm always impressed by the packaging. Not sure if I've heard any Lycia. (Guess I have, since they are on the Beneath the Icy Floe sampler. I've listened to that a half dozen times, and it all blurs together and little makes an impression.) >Anyway, my advice is pick up one of the Projekt samplers, which you >may even be able to find in stores. My problem with the samplers is that I never manage to take anything away from them. Perhaps that's telling me that I shouldn't buy any Projekt discs! I tend to like the songs on those samplers better if I pull one or two off and put them on my own sampler, with a broader mix of music. I like the Heavenly Voices discs better, though I'm never able to remember who is who on them. Neal np: the radio (Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd.... So cool! Have a great time. I just got back from seeing Tori tonight. Somewhat strange evening. She was playing in the Kiva Auditorium of the Convention Center in Albuquerque, and the show had been sold out since before I moved here. But I figured I'd go down and see what I could find. As soon as I got there, I met a woman who had a pair of pretty good, center section tickets. First she wanted me to buy both, then she said she was selling them for $50 a pop. Grrrrrr. I offered her $40, but she wouldn't take it. So, I went to the box office and asked if they happened to have any tickets, and the guy said they did. When I asked for the best single ticket he had, he gave me one in the second row of the center section! And a mere (hah!) $33.50 . (There was actually a front section before the main sections, which contained 5 rows and then an aisle. So this was more like the 9th or 10th row.) The next surprise was when I went into the Auditorium (past the woman who was still unsuccessfully trying to sell her tickets, who seemed much more interested in bargaining by that time). The place was small. This was my fifth Tori concert, and this may well have been the smallest venue I'd seen her in yet. The guy at the box office said he thought the place held about 2200 people. It seemed quite strange to me that on her largest tour, I was sitting closer than ever in a modest size auditorium. Even stranger was that her show was BIG. Really BIG. In fact, it might have been better to watch from farther away. Since it's not a particularly intimate show, you don't really gain much by being close. Just more overcome by the craziness of the lighting and less able to take in the whole effect at once. I was amazed at how all of the old songs had been completely reworked, often to the point of near unrecognizability. She often gave them pretty intriguing readings, almost bluesy in her playing with the phrases, and even more over-the-top than ever with her odd breathy tricks and growls. She opened with Precious THings, and it was very cool to hear her belt out the long giiirrrrlllll, rather than growl it. Kind of funny, since her voice is so gruff now that the growl would have been more natural. Like people have said, her voice is seriously raw. It's amazing how this was unoticable for much of the show, but in the few times she talked to the crowd, she sounded terrible. Also, she really couldn't sing softly. The 2-song Tori & a piano section sounded more like Tina Turner than Tori Amos. It was rather odd anyway, begining with a song I didn't know (something like "he is like a mermaid"), and ending with a generally ineffective cover of Leonard Cohen's Famous Blue Raincoat (though it had some strong moments too). Raspberry Swirl, which I can't recall having ever heard despite having listened to Choirgirl a half dozen times, was amazingly fun as the start of the second encore. The Choirgirl songs were given treatments reasonably close to those on the album, but almost everything else was turned on its head. What I missed the most was the phrasing of most of the songs. Tori has such a unique way of playing out her lines. And while the presentation was still very unique, I found it less compelling. It was a flamboyant, but kind of unaffecting. I think part of it was that the novelty of the raucous band versions got a bit old, and the direct emotional impact of most of the songs just didn't seem to be present. Still glad I got a chance to see this phase of her career though. (Of the times I have seen her, I have gotten better tickets both times I bought them day of the show than the times I've stood in line.) I loved Serial Mom! I thought Kathleen Turner was superb in that role. The fireplace poker was my favorite! (And when she slipped on the gore on the bathroom floor.) Plus it is so worth the sight of Ms. Turner racing down the street in her Sunday best (pearls and all) with a huge carving knife in hand after a teen-aged victim. Really great stuff. Michael n.p. Count me in. I was somewhat introduced to world in 1989 with Peter Gabriel's Passion (one of my "lifetime top ten," to quote Charley). From there I was on a major quest, and have since found Gabriel's Real World label to be a very decent source of world music. Most notably, Sheila Chandra. If there ever should be an Ecto Goddess, Sheila is it. Lately, I picked up Jamshied Sharifi's "A Prayer for the Soul of Layla" which is an excellent Middle East meets West Africa sound. It also features the excellent Hassan Hakmoun and even the "vocal stylings" of Paula Cole on one song. Highly recommended. Betty Carter will surely be missed in the jazz world. I'm pretty sure that was one of Holly Cole's heros and points of inspiration. Since Holly is one of my favorite artists, I am grateful for Betty. Finally, I have heard a lot about Laura Love on this list but never explored her music. I heard a new song by her on WXPN (World Cafe) yesterday, which I truly loved. And it was announced that the song was co-written by Sir Mixalot?! (Baby Got Back!) It was a funky, fun song. I'm going to have to buy this record. It's from 1995, but I just found out about it this year while strolling along a bay area web-ring and landing upon Janine's page. Anyway, it is an amazing disc. I've listened to it just about every day in the past month or so, and I think it would appeal to a lot of people here. Great production. Great voice. Great songs.... from spooky to divine to charming... :) Her webpage is at http://www.sirius.com/~janine/ It has sound samples and lyrics and the usual. Check it out! So, unfortunately Groovasaurus is the band you want to hear. Based in Somerville, MA, where I live, Unfortunately, they broke up this summer. Fortunately, they did put out three CDs while they were together. Strangely, the first two CDs have no title. And unfortunately, none of them had any serious distribution outside the Boston area. Anita Suhanin is an amazing singer. She's got a powerful, deep voice that she really knows how to control. I generally compare her to Mica Richards and Trina Hamlin, although of course they're not the same. She sang in some blue and R&B groupings before Groovasaurus, which actually started out as an R&B cover band but then took on a new life as an original rock band (no CDs from the R&B days). Groovasaurus was a six piece: Ryan Claunch on keyboards, "Goody" and Ian Kennedy on guitars, Lou Ulrich (Anita's boyfriend) on bass, Mike Piehl on drums, and Anita singing. All of them are great musicians, and the band as a whole worked really well together, so it felt like they were one six-personned organism on stage. Their overall sound reminds me of the Carol Noonan Band, especially the album "Absolution", though I have a hard time explaining the similarity I hear. Groovasaurus is very decidedly rock, not folk-rock. Different sub-groupings of these musicians played under other names. The house band for the blues jams at Johnny D's, and the house band occasionally at Toad, has been comprised of (now ex-)Groovasaurus people. Currently, Anita + Lou + Mike + Ryan, with one other person, have a band called Schwang. They haven't recorded anything yet. My favorite Groovasaurus CD is their second one (which, unfortunately, has the same title as the first one: the null title). It's got a photo of a family standing around in front of a hotel in Miami on the outside. Some of the tracks are Enemy Bed, Cherry Street, Lifelike, and Accident. I played this CD for JeffW when he was visiting me, and he liked it, despite it not being the kind of music he usually likes. Or something like that. They're one of the bands I've seen live the most (20+, I lost count). Their web site at www.groovasaurus.com is still up. It has information on "related gigs" where ex-members of the band are playing, and it has a mail order form for buying CDs. -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@polyamory.org cos@cs.brandeis.edu -- WBRS 100.1 FM -- cos@wbrs.org http://www.wbrs.org/ "In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice.
