It's Bob Dylan's most historically notorious gig from Manchester Free Trade Hall on May 17th, 1966. (The 2 CD set is called "The Genuine Bootleg Series Volume 4 & 5" on Columbia.) For those unfamiliar with this show, it's one of those rare performances that has changed the lives of almost everyone who's heard it. It's Dylan at a major crossroads heading out of acoustic folk music into visionary electric territory, much to the confusion & dismay of his fanbase at the time. On this 1966 Europe Tour, Dylan was backed by The Hawks (soon to become The Band) on the electric sets, & although openly boo-ed throughout this tour, Dylan plays & sings with a ferocious intensity not many have come close to matching. The word "visionary" is overused these days, but it is totally applicable here. A mediocre audience recording of this show was one of the 1st ever (if not the 1st!) bootleg R&R records made back in the 60's and has become legendary over the past few decades. PA System (pre-soundboard) tapes of this gig have circulated for about a decade now, too, & are essential listening, in my opinion. Taken in context of what was happening musically on this planet in 1966, Dylan's performance on this recording is nothing short of mezmerising on the acoustic set & absolutely pulverizing on the electric set! Songs like "Visions Of Johanna" & "Like A Rolling Stone" are new at the time & although beyond the comprehension of most audiences in 1966, they are a totally mindblowing (& still challenging) experience listening to them now. I've listened to this show hundred's of times over the years, & when I hear how Dylan literally "attacks" these songs (& the audience for that matter!), it still amazes me every time. Most people aknowledge Dylan's songwriting & lyrical influence, but this recording will show all sceptics how he MUSICALLY changed the world. This performance is so great its downright frightening! This particular show has fascinated me for over 25 years now & I still find it amazing that its taken all this time to release it officially. But hallelujah! It's finally out in a few weeks. :-) Alan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Sep 1998 00:05:49 -0400 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: area and future Tori album Jerene Waite wrote: > In the concert, her spoken voice was raspy and I thought she might need > to clear her throat. I've heard it said that singing and speaking actually use different muscles and membranes and work differently. I did a performance a few weeks ago where my speaking voice was pretty much useless due to laryngitis (which, as I understand it, doesn't affect the larynx itself as much as stuff around it), but my singing was unaffected. Weird. (Does anyone here have a clearer explanation other than "membranes and stuff"?) n.p. Lou Reed, recorded live at the White House: http://www.RepriseRec.com/whitehouse/ n.r.
