It says they are the 2nd and 3rd Area discs, but since I don't have any myself, and the pictured album covers are too tiny for me to read, I can't share the names. (For those who don't know, Area is the band that contained Lynn Canfield and Henry Frayne before they went on to be Moon Seven Times [and Lanterna].) I haven't heard Area myself, so I'll leave it to others to comment if anyone is curious. They each sell for a measly $10. The most amusing thing in the catalog is this quote: "While albums by The Cocteau Twins, This MOrtal Coil and black tape for a blue girl helped define the genre of "ethereal" music, other groups refined the sound and added their own unique touchs." Ah yes, that is 3 bands I always list together as being vital to the genre :) Who writes the stuff in the Projekt catalog again? BTW, is there anything else in the catalog that I should consider ordering besides these two discs? As a long time fan of both R.E.M. and 54.40, I think the similarities between the two bands are limited to the fact that they both originated about the same time (circa 1980), both gained their early audience through college radio, both are guitar based in their sound, both write lyrics with political and social punch, and both have had a Green album. Most probably already know some 54.40 via the fact that Hootie and the Blowfish covered 54.40's I Go Blind and made 54.40 a wad of cash in the process of doing so. 54.40 are a harder edged band than R.E.M. (though Michael is correct in pointing out that Since When is a folkier album). While Show Me and Fight for Love are both good (you should be able to get all of the 54.40 discography through Canadian sources - I still see their stuff everywhere here - the first two albums have been combined into a 1997 compilation), I think Smilin' Buddha Cabaret is the definitve 54.40 album (though you have to like things loud and raw to enjoy this album). But I may be biased in that I wax nostalgic for the old SBC club in Vancouver where I first saw 54.40, and where I had many a good time during my punk years in the early 80's... :) The SBC material is still the best stuff 54.40 plays live, and the tour for that album was the best they've ever played. Side note that the name 54.40 carries some interesting Canadian/American history - derived from the American Manifest Destiny movement under US President Polk to move the US border north to 54.40. Unlike some xenophobic places, Canadians have a pretty broad interpretation as to what constitutes being Canadian - so long as Canada gets the credit. Sure, people born here and who live their entire lives here are Canadian, but so are people who were born here and left as infants, people who were born elsewhere and lived here for a little while, etc. As long as you've done something cool for sports or entertainment or arts or whatever that Canadians can feel sort of proud about, that's the important thing. Definitely the most intimate of settings in which I've seen here on her swings through here over the last 4 years. As it was the last gig in the tour that began with Lilith Fair in Boston, she was both keyed up and relaxed. From her comments between songs, the album project was a cooperative effort and she enjoyed it. I'd venture the observation that "Everything I Need" is her most briliant album yet. The material runs the gamut from poppy rock with great hooks for radio through introspective acoustic folk. I think it will rise to the top of my MF listening stack, replacing "+1". Anyway, it's a pretty standard interview, but she has this to say about the future live album.... With the newness of touring with a full band wearing off, Amos has turned her attention to other projects, such as the double CD she hopes will be available ty Christmas 1999. The double CD will contain one disc of concert highlights and a second of B-side favorites. She said she got the idea for the live album after hearing complaints that her live bootlegs were so bad. Amos said she also want to have a disc that represents her best work, because she realizes she may have hit the pinnacle of her career. "It's a scary feeling, but I think I'm at my peak right now," said Amos, "You have to be honest with yourself, and as far as stamina, muscles and voice go, now is probably the time.
