But here are some key points: Royal Albert Hall was pretty much full. Lineup (in performance order): Lisa Loeb N'Dea Davenport Beth Orton Sarah McLachlan Alison Moyet Sinead O'Connor Finale (all of the above plus Kylie Minogue!) Performance of the night - Beth Orton (in my book) Disappointment of the night - Sarah's short set with no band Best crowd reaction - Sarah by quite a long way Spine tingling moment of the night - Sarah's voice joining the duet with Lisa Loeb Amusing sight of the night - Beth Orton attempting to sing into the same mic as Sinead on the finale and eventaully giving up to go dancing round the stage. I dunno. I have had good experiences with e-commerce from animenation, from the UCI anime store, from amazon, from himeya, from hkpop...having to call customer service has never been a good thing, but these five places - -- where I've done the majority of my online shopping -- have been good when I have contacted them. (Not that Amazon has a phone number listed; but an e-mail was answered within four hours.) Tower Records was great three times and awful the fourth; I haven't bought there again. > And contrary to the impression I give on Ecto, I'm not a crank: > these have been legitimate, even mostly minor problems of the sort > that one encounters in say, 1 out of every 10 business exchanges. And I'm not a foaming-at-the-mouth e-commerce nut, either. I am just writing about my own experiences. I don't think, except for the Tower experience, that I have had a truly bad e-commerce situation come down. And, at this point in my part of Cincinnati, the (one) locally-based bookstore is having severe stock problems, and of the two locally-owned music stores within range, one can't (or won't) order imports, just "imports" (ie, bootlegs) and the other has customer service worse than anywhere I've ever been. (I only go there as a last resort, and only look on the shelf and then leave. I did get my copy of _MWaBT_ there because it was the only place I could find it.) r. n. dominick -- cinnamon@one.net ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Sep 1998 08:21:45 -0400 (EDT) From: Michael Colford Subject: 54-40 and Camille Henderson Don't know if anyone's interested, but I got the latest 54-40 album recently. (I didn't even know it existed!) It's called Since When and it came out sometime this year. I used to be a big 54-40 fan, but I lost track of them in recent years. Their albums had gotten progressively more traditional rock. What a pleasant surprise this new album is. It harkens back to their more folk/rock sound, and... to make this more ecto, features Camille Henderson prominently on background vocals on about 6 songs. I was fairly surprised, but it works really well. 54-40 have been referred to the Canadian R.E.M, which doesn't really accurately describe their sound, but this album does feature a great mix of electric and acoustic stuff, great lyrics natch, and damn good songwriting. I didn't want him to think I was criticizing him personally or anything. Anyway, he wrote me privately with some more suggestions about Philly and the area near Painted Bride, which I wanted to share. I know there are folks coming up from DC, and Marty from Chicago, and Kriston and I from Atlanta, and probably more folks from out of town, not to mention the locals. Is there anyone from Philly going to the show who would be willing to follow up on some of Tony's excellent suggestions and choose a place that would be convenient to the venue, with enough space for folks (any chance of a headcount at some point?) Is there a place that would hopefully have a sort of private section that we could reserve, a place preferably with food? Also, do folks care if there is alcohol or do folks prefer coffee and non-alcoholic drink, and is smoking or non-smoking an issue? I don't have any experience with Philly and no answers to the questions I raise re: the particulars of the gathering. My own preference is that it be a place that has a relatively mellow atmosphere so we can converse and hear each other without shouting (and I personally prefer non-smoking environments.) Is there anyone from Philly who would take the initiative on this gathering? We perhaps can take it off ecto-list to work out details, and then post to ecto-list when there is something decided? Also, what about the general admission factor...is there a way we can get a block of seats reserved up front via the venue itself, or do we need folks to volunteer to be first in line to save a lot of seats? All suggestions welcome!!! Thanks again to Tony for all the ideas and the map urls too! I probably prefer Tony. A few more thoughts for you. Don't mind if ramble here. If the weather is nice, you and the entourage may want to venture up to 18th and Walnut St. and stroll Rittenhouse Square (a small park with benches in the hub of the city). You can easily walk from train that commutes back and forth from the airport. This portion of center city is maybe 16 blocks from "Historic Old Phila." where the show will be held. Busses run or it's a nice walk. A decent place to grab a bite and still chat might be Dock Street Brewing Co. & Restaurant at "2 Logan Square". Use Mapblast for details and streets. There are plenty of places to eat and things to do (museums/parks). Let me know and I'll try to be more specific. Those websites can be good for out-of-towners. As far as D&B. I've never been there. I asked a lot of people that I work with for suggestions and that was sorta it. Probably not my cup of tea either, but if people were driving in and wanted to be entertained (killing time for others to arrive), then maybe it's an OK place, toss in it could rain. Thanks for smoothing things over though. I've been an Ecto reader for a couple of years and a Happy fan for longer that that. That was sort of my first posting and maybe it stung a little. But I thought your note was funny and you really didn't mean anything but constructive commentary. So it's OK...really. Plus, at least it had some small value to you and that was my only purpose. That about it. I will make it to the show, along with my wife and little one (Missy) ((vol.10 Rhodeways..her pic was in there compliments of Meredith Tarr). If I can be of any more help to you, let me know. Peace :) - --------------9D75E6602785A2752FA0C7EF-- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Sep 1998 08:59:39 -0700 (PDT) From: Greg Jumper Subject: Lida Husik (was Re: Veda Hille, Pee Shy) Chelsea wrote: Plus, the new Lida Husik album is another boring technoexperiment, Is this _Faith in Space_ you're referring to? Anyone who's sick to death of hearing me rave, please hit the scroll bar. The following is excerpted from a live review I did of the band in July. Of all the bands whose music has played an active role in my life, whose beautiful melodies, insightful lyrics, and deep emotion has helped me to better understand my life and the world around me, only Neutral Milk Hotel have inspired me to make them a cake. NMH's music inspires this reaction in me because their music, like much good art, is like food: it tastes good, and listening to it makes me feel nourished and gives me energy to put into my everyday life and creative endeavours. Musically, _In An Aeroplane Over The Sea_ resembles a Molotov cocktail made of Pere Ubu's obtuse angularity, the hippie-dippy Christian spirituality of Tom Rapp, Mary Margaret O'Hara's intoxicating vision and graceful stutter, and the tarnished brass filigree of the Salvation Army Marching Band, but only list the possible influences would be leaving out the other half of the equation, the spine-tingling magic realism, innocence, and hope, and the passion and urgency in executing these story songs that could well make this the album of the year. >I think I read about them in that AP article about the Athens "scene" these >days...granted I'm only an hour drive away, but I've not kept up with >goings on >there. I've been considering moving to Athens after I get my associates. The free rent and semi-rural area attracts me, but it's the kind of place where I could live cheaply, the weather would be nice, and I could occasionally see bands whose music I liked. (Or have a better chance at doing so than if I moved to the other city where I was considering moving -- Phoenix, Arizona.) >You just mentioned two of my very fave Veda songs...she blows me away. About the Bearsville show...keep trying WDST (914-679-WDST). They will be giving away tickets starting this weekend--they have 200. If you're willing to travel to Woodstock, they will *probably be giving some away in person next Thursday night at Tinker Street Cafe's "WDST Sessions" and also this Sunday night after the Imogen Heap concert at Joyous Lake. Maybe even at the Saugerties Garlic Festival this weekend. I may be able to snag a few extras. No promises. If I can, I'll have you guys pick a number or something. Or try calling the program director and offer to sleep with him. I don't know...just thinking out of my ass, here and trying to come up with some ideas. * means this is what they said. Is it totally amazing? And (what I really wanted) can I get a copy of this? >NP- Joy Eden Harrison & Cindy Lee Berryhill-Cape Cod LRT 9/5/98 Actually, what I'm really looking for is some recordings of any of Joy's new stuff. She didn't play much new stuff whenever I taped her, and I thought she had a bunch of marvelous songs. I can't wait for her album. The music I brought with me was mostly piles of stuff that I hadn't given enough attention to. I'm currently listening to a tape that was unlabeled, and turns out to be Jewel doing "Hey Mom I'm on 91X". I can't even figure out where I got that from. Jewel plays DJ and plays a pretty interesting mix of stuff. Hope all is well on the Cape. New Mexico is wonderful. The weather swings are pretty amazing. Lows in the mid 50's, high's pushing 90. I keep wanting to leave work early and go bike and hike before it gets cold, but I find instead that I keep having to spend time fixing things. 3 trips to the shop on my bike (and I still need to rig up something for my busted tail light before I'll ride at night), 2 trips (plus one in MD) to get my car in good shape, bought a new monitor, modem and video card, and now need to get a new zip drive, since mine has completely given up. I can't believe it only lasted about 15 months... just barely past the warranty. Imagine that. Too funny... I was off-line reading that while you sent this out. Uncharacteristically, I actually bothered to follow a posted link, mostly for the info on the This Mortal Coil variant. And I didn't repost it either, though if anyone can't get to the site, I'd be happy to. The whole issue is interesting, with positive reviews of Sarah Slean, Lisa Germano, and [whatever that This Mortal Coil-like thing is]. A while back, someone on this list posted something or other on behalf of Ashley Maher, and I wrote them email asking that they pass on a message to her to send a CD to us here at WBRS. Well, she did, and we got it, and we've played it, and will play it some more too. It's very cool, and I'd like to thank her for sending it. She actually wrote me a letter, handwritten, along with the CD. But she didn't include an email address or a phone number.
