They also have some other live webcasts coming up including Imogen Heap (9/27) and Jeffrey Gaines (10/8), as well as various other shows from the Joyous Lake and the Tinker Street Cafe. (10pm ET on every Thursday night they webcasts from the Tinker Street Cafe with a live act) Then there's the permanent archives where right now they have a Jewel show from February 1995, and two rare Richie Havens shows. It seems he supplies them with tapes of shows he plays around the globe....calling it "Global Groove": Be it a cassette from an after hours jam session in a basement studio in Naples, or a newly released CD from South Africa, New Zealand, or the Far East, if its in the groove Richie plays it on his Radio Woodstock show. The Global Groove is a rarity; for nowhere else can you find programming chosen and hosted by one of the planet's musical legends.) . They told me they plan to expand the permanent archives as time goes on. I'm so happy that I knew about it in advance because Jay and Dave are ....uh ....... normally past my bedtime! It was impossible NOT to notice how raw and worn-out Tori's voice sounded. But, as ususal, she plowed through without a complaint and later, on "the couch", didn't even mention it. Ya know, she has said that she has NEVER "called in sick" to a performance. God that is incredible. I just missed three days of work due to a sinus infection!! I would also like to take this opportunity to say to all Toriphiles that, upon reflection, I feel that I slammed 'Boys for Pele' way too hard the other day. I did say that there were gems on the album (although no one who responded noticed that!), but I need to ammend/clarify my comments. I believe that my all-time favorite Tori Amos song is "Putting the Damage On", so I can't really hate BFP all that much!! Plus, I love "Hey Jupiter", "Marianne", "Doughnut Song", "Caught a Lite Sneeze" and "Horses". It's just that, for some reason, when I think of BFP I think of Tori squawking like a chicken on "Blood Roses" - a song I otherwise like except for the squawking!! That is always what I think of when I think of BFP. It's just one of those things: I don't WANT to dwell on that, but there it is! It just pops up in my head. So let's just say that, for me, it's an uneven work. By Tori Amos standards. By regular artist standards it woudl be great!! It's funny: I remember when it came out, Rolling Stone gave it 2 1/2 out of 5 stars. Spin gave it 9 out of 10 points. So, ya know, it's like anchovies, as Tori herself has said. I know that ugliness amidst beauty has its place. Ravel's string trios and quartet are the modern touchstones for this. It's a device which provokes uneasy emotions in the listener but then soothes the spirit when the major chord resolves the phrase. The listener is calmed and grateful. I understand this. But imitating a squawking chicken - oh God, I'm sorry, Tori lost me there. And "Professional Widow"? No, thanks. But, in conclusion, I think I was in a grumpy mood that day and the truth is I love Tori - in fact, I would say she's my favorite musical artist (at least unitl KT Bush comes out with her new album which she is secretly working on. Or so they say at Love Hounds). So I take back the intensity with which I dissed 'Boys for Pele'. Whew God I am rambling. I think I am delirious from my sinus infection!! Sorry, all. Did anyone by chance tape it & can make me a copy or I can make a copy or your orig.? Needless to say I love Lucy Lawless and Xena...I recently had such a blast at DragonCon (www.dragoncon.org) in Atlanta, where I attended much of the Xena track, and got to hear and query Exec. Prod. Steven Sears, and also I got to see a hilarious and very high quality bloopers reel he brought along. Lucy Lawless is sooo funny...she even got through a Howard Stern show unscathed and upstaging him at points. I would have loved to have seen her on Broadway. She can sing, too. Speaking of DragonCon, I remember last year I posted here or to someone that Happy should perform there and also display her art. Especially now with her tie-in with that computer game Timelapse, she'd be great at DragonCon. Also she might like networking with all the SF, fantasy and horror genre talents that attend...this year I'll bet she would have enjoyed Roger Dean, the wonderful album cover illustrator for Yes and Asia. Hey everyone, I'm a total Jane Siberry dunce!! Of course I've heard OF her, but I don't know her music other than "One More Color" as sung by Sarah Polley in the movie 'The Sweet Hereafter'. That song is sweet, but hardly the work of someone who has such a fiercely devoted following as she obviously has here at Ecto. So I will assume that "One More Color" is not really the pinnacle of her musical achievements. So please, folks, now that you've got my attention, describe her to me as best you can. Forgive the fact that its very specifically geared to the EDAs, but I'm too lazy to rewrite it. Hope everyone is well. Hope to see some of you at Happy's Bearsville gig. PS. Hi Neal C! Thanks for the "Maryville" postcard! Its on my fridge where it belongs. NP- Jewel "Spirit" (rough mixes) NR- "Mr. Mike: The life & work of Michael O'Donoghue (the man who made comedy dangerous. I love his very sick humor, what can I say?) ************************************************* Hi all, Well, you'll all be very happy to know that Jewel's album is essentially finished. Recording wrapped up about two weeks ago & they are doing final touches & mixes as I write this. The recording sessions, with Patrick Leonard in the production chair, went really well. (The studio was located on a large ranch & Jewel was able to take her horse along for horseback riding diversions between sessions.) As you already know, the North American release date is scheduled for Tuesday, November 17th, 1998. Everything is still on target for that release date to be met. The title of Jewel's new album is "SPIRIT". Proceeding the release of her new album "SPIRIT", will be the first single titled "Hands". This single is scheduled to hit the radio stations on October 19th. (Extra cuts/remixes on the single have not yet been determined.) In the next few weeks, Jewel will also shoot a promo video for "Hands" & that should hit MTV & VH1 by late October or early November to coincide with the album release. I realize none of you have ever heard this song since its never been performed live, but I can tell you that "Hands" is really beautiful (& one of the most spiritual songs she's ever written). Some of you noticed that an AOL profile was recently added to Jewel's [JewelJK@aol.com] website email address & it has the quote "In the end, only kindness matters". This quote is a line from "Hands". The finalized tracklist has not yet been determined, but should be confirmed in the next week or so. As usual, Jewel recorded more songs than can possibly fit on the album. The tentative tracklist (still subject to change, of course!) for "SPIRIT" includes the following songs: 1. "Nothing Without Love" -this is a shorter sparsely orchestrated slow acoustic version of "Deep Water" which may or may not be included. 2. "Barcelona" - this is an awesome new one written during last years European tour. EDAs were treated to an earlier version of this at the Java Joe's EDA Thanksgiving Concert last year. This is with full band & has that ominous haunting quality of "Last Dance Rodeo". Its one of those songs where she begins singing in her lowest register & then lets her voice soar on the "Let me fly" chorus. 3."Down So Long"-aka "Been Down So Long". This is an old Innerchange era song resurrected with full band arrangement. This was played almost every gig last year on her "Papillon" Tour. 4. "What's Simple Is True" -aka "Winter Song". Beautiful song, touching lyrics & a sparse arrangement (that has hints of a Rickie Lee Jones "Ghostyhead" album influence, in my opinion.) 5. "Jupiter"- my personal favorite at the moment. Very different approach for Jewel. GREAT lyrics!! Another new one with band. 6. "Songs Of Freedom"- another new one. Partially inspired by a tape I gave Jewel that included Bob Marley's "Redemption Song". (Yo Pete, I know you are doing backflips about this concept!) 7. "Kiss The Flame"- another new one written during last years European tour. One of her most poetic lyrics & very pretty. You may have heard the clip of Jewel playing this on the recent 17 Magazine TV special. 8. "Fat Boy"-aka "Fragile Flame". Solo acoustic version. 9."Stranger(Enter From The East)"- absolutely gorgeous! 10."Innocence Maintained"- full band arrangement(I hear those EDA"Yeeha!'s) 11."Do You?"-another new one with band, written during the movie. 12."Hands" - the first single & video(see above), with band 13."Deep Water"- I know almost everyone wanted this! :-) It's a full band version & a bit different arrangement than live versions. 14. "Absence Of Fear"- stark band arrangement, beautiful vocal, need I say more? That's likely what will be on the new album & the current assembly of song order. As you know from Jewel's website & previous posts, quite a few other songs were also recorded & may or may not wind up on singles as extra cuts, and are not scheduled for the album. Well, that brings you totally up to date. There's a lot to look forward to & I'm quite sure everyone here will find something new to love on this album as well as a few of your "wish-list" songs. The new ones are quite amazing & there's a lot of lyric content that I'm sure will inspire you personally (as well as inspire posts galore upon release!!). Have a wonderful day! It's not at all unusual to hear women artists back to back, especially on folk programs where frequently women are more than 50% of what's played. The whole reason that many commercial stations don't play two female-sung songs back-to-back is that they don't want to lose their male (read: music-buying) audience. Yes, it's true that females buy lots of CDs and tapes and concert tickets. But corporate policy, conservative as it is by its very nature, is slow to adapt to changing trends in the real world. And that really is a rule, by the way. Not necessarily a written rule (I don't know about that), but more like conventional "wisdom." It's the same philosophy that caused producers to question Sarah McLachlan for having Paula Cole open for her in a tour a few years ago. Women *don't* open for women - it's just not done, according to traditional music industry standards. But of course we all know now that they turned out to be wrong. > -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@leftbank.com cos@cs.brandeis.edu > -- Producer, Free Live Music -- booking@wbrs.org http://www.wbrs.org/ > All genre ethnic diversity 24 hours a day, 365 days a year > Free live music three times weekly WBRS in Waltham, 100.1FM stereo ^^^^^^^ Ah ha! No wonder you don't notice this anti-female, commercial bias so much. You live and work in the world center of folk radio!! They talk about the VH1 hosted party Lilith Rocks for Women's Health and mentions that hosts where: Sarah, Cindy Crawford and Halle Berry, and those in attendence included: Debbie Gibson, Wesley Snipes, Robin Tunney, etc. There's a collage of pics from it, with Sarah (who looks really beautiful in this long blue-gradient dress), Liz Phair, Joan Osboarne, etc. In the same issue there's a very small piece about a "new" (I guess?) singer/songwriter, Chan Marshall. She looks a little bit like Emm Gryner and Natalie Imbruglia mixed. Weird. :) Anyway, it says that she's got disturbing lyrics (which is what intersts me ;)... Her CD is called _Moon Pix_. (ah, i guess she's not new cause it says she has 3 albums!) Her lyrics seem very interesting, I'm definitely interested in hearing this CD or at least the sound clips on the web. Check her out, let me know what you think! :) jessica n. weiser - http://adam.nettfriends.com/Jess "what has happened" - my 5 song EP available now through the website! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Sep 1998 11:13:49 +1100 From: Andrew Fries Subject: Chan Marshall (longish review) She certainly sounds fascinating - I hope this is not one of these cases where reviews are more interesting than the music itself... Following is a review of one of her CDs, lifted from "GravityGirl" E-Zine Also, she has another glowing review at Matador Records site (and a sound sample) at Listening to What Would The Community Think is like being enveloped in a cocoon. It's like being read a book as you drift into sub-conscious... Lulling, gentle, but all the more frightening and bleak for the experience. Chan Marshall is Cat Power. Steve Shelley and Tim Foljahn's names may be on the record, but this is Chan's and Chan's only. Marshall is a confident, commanding songstress. Her voice has an utterly compelling quality, etching sobriety in all it turns to. Her songs drip with emotionally-profound depth, capturing moments of pure fear, yearning, desire, despondence. This is an album full of love songs. Full of hate songs. The arrangements are left sparse, they seem quiet because of the pace, but can tear with their power. A tribal drum strikes with a pounding, driving rhythm in the stomach-knotting Water & Air, the record's strongest track and one of the most moving songs you'll possibly ever hear. Marshall's playfully droll and horrifically desolate lyrics smearing images of water, narratives of drowning, and lamentations of fragmented moments of life into a breathtaking slice of pure pathos. As Marshall wails "I did not want you to die alone", agitated, grief-stricken strings hum hymns of despair behind her. A lone guitar tells its tale. That drum pounds. Still pounds. "Oh to be at the bottom of a river, below the dark water: the devil all around." Marshall's incomprehensibly expressionate voice still cuts a swathe. This is such beauty. The title-track is equally as captivating. Disparate throes of piano are disparately thrown amongst the threadbare arrangements. It's again a solitary guitar line. Alone, simply a narrator. "Things a mirror should say on a very hot day" is just one of the shards of thought that have been lyricised, perhaps as a preposition to the main train of repetition: "you are so beautiful." And then there are cries of feedback that darken the background, the kind of poverty that is airbrushed out of brochures promoting an area. Just what would the community think? The album also stops for an enviably frank moment of undiluted emotion... "A million things I will never understand..." King Rides By starts of quiet, a seed of thought, a memory. Jettisoned through thought-loops, releasing the past scorn that it holds, this flickering image grows and grows to becoming pure melancholy. "I need your love" Marshall cries, "more than you'd ever know." Opener In This Hole is the preparatory for the experience that this record is; simple, humble, a weary-eyed downcast rainy-day sojourn. It's the tenderly coercive guitar that again guides the emotion, light sprinkles of xylophone adorning this impossibly beautiful desert. This one record is a storybook of a lifetime of reminiscence. Each chapter another movement in the condition of the human heart. And all as a whole traversing the spectrum of emotion. Glorious, boundless, limitless, What Would The Community Think is a revelation. __________________________________________________ There are two rules for ultimate success in life. 1.
