Lately, especially since MWABT came out and I joined this list, I've been jonesin' to hear _Warpaint_, which is still my favorite HR. So a coupla months ago I started bugging him about returning them. He kept saying that he just couldn't give them up at the time (he was going through some emotional turmoil / breakup stuff) ... but he would give them to me soon. I waited. Finally, about a month ago, he admitted to me that *HE LOST THEM!* He thinks he left them at the xSO's house ... so I called said xSO, and they're not there. My best friend lost two of my favorite CDs in the world. Grounds for impeachment? I was upset, naturally, but didn't want to admit this to anyone (oh, the embarrasment of being on the official HR discussion group and not being able to put _Warpaint_ in the n.p. slot) I figured I would just get new copies ... and he would owe me BIG. I'm thinking dinners from now 'til, well, forever. HOL is easy enough to find, but I started feverishly looking for _Warpaint_. No stores around here have it. I've found every other HR CD but that one. About three weeks ago I attempted to order _Warpaint_ through CD Universe. Didn't hear from them. Last week I contacted customer service. Tthey said they were still looking for that and another hard-to-find disk that I've been looking for forever (Edward Ka-Spel's _Aazhyd Chyna Dol_). I still haven't heard a thing. Has anyone dealt with CD Universe? What was the outcome? And more importantly, what's the best way for me to get my hands on a _Warpaint_ CD? ALSO, does anyone have a clue as to when the dates/more dates for Happy's tour will be finalized? It'd be nice to start thinking about airfare and accomodations ... Impatient in Fort Worth (a.k.a. Mark) p.s. As far as I can tell, there's no one on this list from D/FW, or Texas for that matter ... but if so, there's a free outdoor concert in downtown Fort Worth with Patty Griffin and Heather Nova on Thurs, Sept 24. I'm there. n.p. _Lion and the Cobra_ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Sep 1998 23:36:21 -0500 From: Richard Subject: Unidentified Happy Object Sighting in Maine I get precious little time to post here these days, but I just had to pass this on. MWABT has been pretty much invisible here, good ole Bull Moose Music being the only outlet stocking it- Borders has a nice fat bin full of HTR CDs, but they seem to be unaware that the lady has a new release. SO- While at the local Mom N Pop store purchasing milk and anti-static-cling sheets a few minutes ago, I heard the strains of _Roy_ wafting about. I asked the girl at the register what station was on and she said "I wanna say 98.9, but I'm not sure" <> 98.9 is WCLZ, the local so-called "album station" that swears they'll never assault you with contests and plays a lot of "Lilith Music" , but generally sticks with the established stars like Sarah and Tori except for an occasional surprising cut by Jonatha Brooke, Merrie Amsterberg, Imogen Heap, Mary Lou Lord, etc.... I switched to WCLZ when I got back into my car, and there it was... (the single version). I called the station soon's I got home, but they said stuff this time of night is all pre-programed and pre-recorded, which I thought was a good sign: they committed precious commercial time to Happy Rhodes and I now have a brand new apppreciation for this station in populous Brunswick, Maine. Any reports of other mainstream stations out there playing HTR? - --Richard n.p. As far as a new album, I'm not sure, but I know Jane has been having some severe financial problems and is currently running her own record company, Sheeba, totally by herself. Even if you call the Sheeba phone number to order something, you can often get Jane's voice on the answering machine. Please, please, please......if you're going to buy Jane's music, try to buy it directly from Sheeba. Maybe then she'll have enough $$ to record another new album. It's out of print in the US, but I think it's still pretty easy to get from many of the Canadian sites. The US version was slightly edited down anyway, so you want to be sure to get the Canadian one. If you have a lot of upgrading to do, I recommend seeking out the box set. It's got all the CD's except The Red Shoes, plus two discs of B-sides and oddities. It's available in multiple versions, the most expensive being the Japanese and the cheapest being the Canadian. I got mine from A&B Sounds in Vancouver when the Canadian box came out and it was really cheap. (Good thing, since all I needed were the 2 bonus discs, but my friends who received all the extra Kate discs were quite happy.) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 01:32:30 -0400 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Let's talk about Tori! Well, it's obviously not exclusionary to her whole audience, since lots of people here love it. (I started off hating it and am slowly warming to aspects of it.) > For > example, if I were to sit at my piano and write music that goes with these > words: "...oh I sat at my desk today, it was boring and I cried, I hate my > boss's mustache and yet I smiled and I lied..." That is self-indulgence, > because it's meaningless to anyone besides myself. To anyone besides you? I think it nails the everyday experience of a lot of people quite well. (After all, Dilbert is a huge hit...) Curiously, though, Tori's lyrics are condemned as self-indulgent for exactly the opposite reason: not because they are mundane but because they are often so random-seeming that many people can't find any sense of connection with them. I find that while I love poetry that is so far out that it makes Tori's words seem like the daily news (my fave poets include Jackson Mac Low, Hannah Weiner, and Clark Coolidge), when it comes to song lyrics I prefer songs with a touch more coherence (fave lyricists, off the top of my head, include Leonard Cohen, Kevin Gilbert, and Peter Gabriel). I find that when I write poetry myself, it tends to be very stylized and calculated, but when I write songs I go for the conceptual impact. One reason for this may be that radio is the medium by which most songs are carried to us, and thus they have to click immediately, since you can't rewind a radio. This might give us different expectations. Since Little Earthquake, at least, Tori has given us lyrics that you have to wander around in for a while before you spot what's happening or build a meaning for yourself. (An aside: I find that I really dislike computer games that force you to figure out arbitrary stuff to continue (You can only see the door beside the frog if you have previously fed the bat some carrot juice twice and sneezed when approached by the walrus). I recently got Peter Gabriel's "Eve", since I'm interested in the art and music in it, but am utterly frustrated by the little games ya gotta guess at. If I ever design one of these interfaces (I'm working on creating a CD-ROM now, but it's going to be comparatively straightforward), I'm going to have an icon on every screen that shows you what the puzzle was, solves it, and moves you forward. People who like interfaces that are designed like trolls under bridges would be free to ignore it. (Now back to radar-tracking the unladen swallow...)) > Now, I'm *NOT* suggesting > that an artist abandon his or her unique vision in order to please an > anticipated audience, but I expect to plunk down my $17 and get something that > is meant to communicate, not something that is psychologically masturbatory > which, IMHO (OK, maybe NOT so humble!!), Tori's 'Boys For Pele' was. I do think that I'd like to see Tori work with a producer again. "Total E" is run by Columbia House, the people with the Music Club, but as far as I can tell, Total E is for people who just want to buy, and not have to join the club too. http://www.totale.com/ Do a search for Happy Rhodes from their main page, you don't have to be specifically in the music section. They list all 10. If you can actually *get* all 10 is the question. They're also having a sale now. CDs for $12.78. If anyone does try them, let me know how it goes. I can't try them myself because we don't have any credit cards (don't want any either) so I never buy anything on-line. I belong to the Columbia Houses (all except CD-Rom) which is how I found out about Total E, but I don't have anything to do with them otherwise. I'm just passing along a tip.
