THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH by the way are fans of the TRASH CAN SINATRAS. their PUMPKIN SEED video (a compilation of live stuff, interviews, and videos from their first couple of albums) has DAVE wearing one of their tshirts during the interview. SINEAD O'CONNOR: last i heard SINEAD O'CONNOR switched labels, from CHRYSALIS to ATLANTIC and that is why CHRYSALIS released that best of album. to fulfill her 5 or 6 album obligation. apparently ATLANTIC plans on giving her the "jewel" treatment for the new album. this means constant promotions, tons of posters, promo CD's and endless push push push until she hits is back big. so we shall see if that happens with her new album. i for one have to say that i liked her first two albums, but found UNIVERSAL MOTHER, well ectobland. not enough fierceness in it for me. *shrug* sorry. i did (do) give her props for the AM I NOT YOUR GIRL album. great CD, even if her voice did sound a little thin on it. JANE SIBERRY: jane appearance that aren't directly attributed to her. why o why did everyone leave out the INDIGO GIRLS SWAMP OPHELIA? she did back up (even if the credits were mispelled and attributed to JANE SIBERY). also her (bad) tribute to LAURA NYRO from the tribute album TIME AND LOVE, the MUSIC OF LAURA NYRO. ugh. jane did a medley of laura nyro songs, and it just sounded stupid and pretentious. much better is JILL SOBULE's contribution, STONED SOUL PICNIC. also stand outs are HOLLY COLE's SWEET BLINDNESS, SUZANNE VEGA's BUY AND SELL, and LISA GERMANO's ELI'S COMIN'. and i love JANE SIBERRY. by the way HAPPY RHODES got cited once again in PULSE MAGAZINE. she was listed in the top 100 indie releases in the past year. the quote said: HAPPY RHODES: MANY WORLDS ARE BORN (samson): A singer-songwriter for the age of electronica. hmmm. also of ectonote, is a small mention and photo of JANE SIBERRY in an article about major label artists who go the indie route. and can anyone out there tell me the whole story about the break up of the COCTEAU TWINS? i keep on hearing disparent rumors about the whole thing. someone tells me that for sure they broke up. someone tells me that it is not true and is all a rumor and they are just on haitus doing separate projects, but because it is taking so long to put out anything everyone thinks they broke up (same rumors floated around THE SUNDAYS). did LIZ and ROBIN break up as well? or did the band just break up? LIZ and ROBIN (and SIMON too) were still collaborating up until last year though (they worked on a couple of songs for FAYE WONG's latest album that came out in 1997 and they were credited as ROBIN GUTHRIE and SIMON RAYMOND appear courtesy of the COCTEAU TWINS) which means that any break up has to have happen late last year, or this year. just want the facts straightened out please. and yes the COCTEAU TWINS are one of my faves too. 4AD really screwed up letting them and THE RED HOUSE PAINTERS escape. shame on IVO. no wonder they aren't doing so hot financially. JOYCE, all of the NIELDS albums sound that way. don't bother getting any more if you don't like GOTTA GET OVER GRETA. and their new one PLAY is even less fun, less energetic if you ask me. and VICKIE notice how METH offered to get you on the guest list but not me. i think METH is probably still bugged that i compared her and VALERIE to XENA and GABRIELLE. ah well. :p irvin ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 12:48:26 +0200 (MET DST) From: Yves Denneulin Subject: Re: CAT POWER, PJH, TORI, BETH, w/ a little HAPPY thrown in. They are really >cool... > >Has anyone else ever just pondered this...? Yes, although I would say there are two (maybe more?) opposing categories of track 2 songs: 1. The really powerful song that is too powerful to be an opener (but is usually the first single). After establishing a suitable introduction, the second track defines the album's sound. 2. The non-single between single tracks 1 & 3 (which sort of reverses the first category). These songs are usually less immediate, but also more complex and/or thoughtful. Interestingly, whichever category the song falls into, it is still usually a great song. Also interesting is that most artists have dabbled in both style approach, and I have tried to emphasize that with my examples: Songs which I think fall into category 1: Joga by Bjork (Homogenic) Oh The Drears/Feed The Fire by Happy (Rhodes I/Warpaint (yeah, first on Rhodesongs, now shut up)) God/Blood Roses by Tori (Under The Pink/Boys For Pele You Outta Know by Alanis (Jagged Little Pill) Vox by Sarah McLachlan Mandinka by Sinead (The Lion & The Cobra) My Fidelity by Heather Nova (Glow Stars) Songs which I think fall into category 2: Sweet by Veda Hille (Spine) Girl/Cruel by Tori (Little Earthquakes/From The Choirgirl Hotel) Wait/I Love You by Sarah McLachlan (Fumbling Towards Ecstasy/Surfacing) Heal/Blood Of Me by Heather Nova (Oyster/Siren) For We Believe/MWABT by Happy (Rearmament/MWABT) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 22:27:00 +0000 From: "Tim" Subject: Re: heather nova (was: hole and bland) - ---------- >From: Greg Dunn >To: ecto@smoe.org >Subject: Re: heather nova (was: hole and bland) >Date: Sat, Sep 12, 1998, 4:38 PM > >That said, I'm a loner on the HN mailing list, because I find _Glow Stars_ >haunting and beautiful; easily my fave studio effort (yes, also produced by >Felix). "Frontier" stands out, but the whole album is very homogeneous yet >full ranged. Yes! Frontier is definitely a brilliant, nay, flawless song. Quite a few are on Glowstars. My Fidelity has some of the strongest lyrics Heather's written. Spirit In You is heartbreakingly beautiful, as is Shell, a favourite of mine. Glowstars is quite an achievement, starting off jokey and ending up quite otherworldly and mysterious. Mothertongue is brilliant spiteful, and Shaking The Dolls is deliciously chaotic. However Frontier stands out as being the most dreamy, layered and ethereal piece she's done. Oyster is slightly less consistent, but has my two favourite songs, Heal and Island, because I consider them to be among the most beautifully written and realised songs ever. Walking Higher and Doubled Up are nearly as good. The rockier songs are still great, and they are why I bought Heather in the first place, but they work more as compliments to the slow songs, and I would dislike a whole album of them. Siren I think is largely underrated, and as an album I would actually put in on par with Oyster. The stark beauty may be slightly obscured under the production and poppiness, but I think what Heather has really done is mature as a songwriter, and people who are busy searching for her original magic may miss the vast array of classic songs it possesses. Blood Of Me is edgy and mysterious, Winterblue is a fantastic ballad, Paper Cup is heartbreaking and Not Only Human is as evocative as any of the songs on Glow Stars. I also love every other song on Siren, and I think they'd be raved about if from a new artist, but are ignored because we don't expect them from Heather. Oh well... I was just agreeing with Vickie on not being able to appreciate it. I think my biggest problem with the CD is what you and others have said. A lot of the songs just make me feel unpleasant. And, I'm not really sure why because I often actively like disturbing/depressing art. I don't feel like _Spine_ is any more disturbing than other music (or films or books) I *do* like. But I just feel queasy after listening to it. Anyway, I was glad to hear Meredith describe the CD as an uncomfortable listen. I like the CD a lot but its not my favorite of her's. As a breakthrough CD I think Equipoise or even Building the Colossus would have been more commercially assessable. I'm not saying I prefer that. I actually prefer her darker inaccessible songs. But if its the goal of any performer to achieve success and popularity, they have to find a middle ground somewhere. I say this because I just got off the phone with a woman DJ at WXPN in Philadelphia. For those of you not familiar with that station, it's the station that was most responsible for her breakthrough in this area. Before the CD was released they were playing 3 songs from the CD. I haven't heard another cut since the album was released. I questioned her about this and she said that they were giving it some play but they were having a hard time getting behind it and finding what they think would be something that they could play. Also listener response has been minimal. I expressed my disappointment that the radio station that pushed for her success had abandoned her after she finally signed a national contract. Maybe they could play her old stuff just to get her name out there. After we hung up she did announce that Happy was going to be at the PAINTED BRIDE in concert. So maybe I helped a little. She also told me that Happy was in town to do an ECHOES segment. I'd like to hear what is going on in other parts of the country. And for something totally different, I've been enjoying all the opinions on different kinds of women in music. My tastes are eclectic too. Probably my favorite CD of two years ago was not mentioned by the SNEAKER PIMPS. I also thought the remix CD was brilliant. Another CD which was a favorite, on Peter Gabriel's label, THE AFRO CELT SOUND SYSTEM. No women involved but an amazing blend of Celtic and African music. fred ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 13:43:33 -0700 (PDT) From: "J." Has anyone else ever just pondered this...? I have pondered it, but my experience is that the *first* track is usually the strongest one, the one most likely to pull you in. Probably to catch people at listening stations in stores, before they lose interest and move on to something else. It bugs me, because I'd much rather the order of songs on an album be dictated by artistic concerns (much in the same way that set list ordering for concerts can sometimes be an art in itself), rather than by marketing pressures, etc. Also, I feel deceived by it - that first great track gives me the impression that the CD is going to be good, and many times the rest of it is a letdown by comparison. Of course this isn't always the case, but I've noticed it enough times to call it a pattern. And even if a number of songs on a CD are good, it's rare that the first one isn't purposely set up to capture attention. I've been around long enough to know not to take it personally. :) And I'm going to take the high ground and refrain from going off on the ubiquitous ecto artists I really despise, like Lisa Loeb, and the artists people still love here but I can't figure out why because they haven't done one thing worthwhile since their debut CDs, like Sinead O'Connor and Innocence Mission. It's all personal opinion, and that's what keeps life interesting, right? I will, however, put in a few more responses to a few things: Irvin added: >JOYCE, all of the NIELDS albums sound that way. don't bother getting >any more if you don't like GOTTA GET OVER GRETA. and their new one PLAY >is even less fun, less energetic if you ask me. Well, actually, Joyce: you might like their first CD, _Bob On The Ceiling_ better. It's a lot mellower, none of the crunchy bits (which btw is what I love about _GGOG_, but what the hell do I know). _Play_ isn't doing much for me so far. I kind of knew that was going to happen because the track listing is pretty much all of the post-GGOG songs that didn't do much for me in concert (with the exception of "Georgia O" and "Snowman", which both kick ass). The odds and sods on _Mousse_ make for a much more satisfying album. There are a couple tracks on _Mousse_ that sound like Tsunami songs, and if The Nields ever decideded to go in that direction I'd be giddily happy. I'd probably be the only one, but hey. > and VICKIE notice how METH offered to get you on the guest list but not >me. i think METH is probably still bugged that i compared her and >VALERIE to XENA and GABRIELLE. ah well. :p You did? I must've missed that! Why did you make that comparison? (Which one of us is Xena?) For some reason she's too busy listening to her Spice Girls and Brandy CDs to have time to fully appreciate this pinnacle of our popular culture. ;>) And Irvin, the reason I made that offer to Vickie and not you is because the Scrappy Bitch shows aren't being booked by anyone I know, whereas any show in Chicago would probably be booked by Veda's new booking agent, who is someone I know. Stuart responded: >Anyway, I was glad to hear Meredith >describe the CD as an uncomfortable listen. If she can be Veda's biggest >supporter and still say that, maybe I just need to hear _Path of a Body_. Well, I don't know if I'm Veda's *biggest* supporter ... :) I do, however, think that _Path Of A Body_ is a better introduction to her music than _Spine_. Like I've been saying, it's a lot more fun to listen to. It's got much more inocuous artwork, for those for whom that's an issue, and it's also got some of the most gorgeous songs ever in "Precious Heart" and "And Birds". Anyway. On to other things: woj and I got together with Don Keller last night and caught Cindy Lee Berryhille's set at the Mercury Lounge. We got there a little bit late - I'm not sure how many songs we missed, but we did get to see her play for about a half hour. She was fractured and funny, and I enjoyed her set a lot. "Make Way For The Handicapped" was missing something without Veda's toy piano accompaniment, though (the first time I saw CLB was at the Bottom Line back in May, when Veda was also on the bill). And she completely destroyed "I Wish I Was A Man", which she did for an encore. woj noticed more missed lines than I did, but it was obvious she wasn't completely in touch with the song as she was doing it. It was still good, though. After that we left and I'd intended to head across town to see June Rich, but woj was tired and he was driving, so it's home we went instead. :P I'm sure I'll get another chance to see June Rich sometime. Yeah, I'll second that!!! Thanks for the posting Irvin. So as a return favor I'll attempt an answer to your CT questions: > and can anyone out there tell me the whole story about the break up of > the COCTEAU TWINS? i keep on hearing disparent rumors about the whole > thing. someone tells me that for sure they broke up. someone tells me > that it is not true and is all a rumor and they are just on haitus doing > separate projects, but because it is taking so long to put out anything > everyone thinks they broke up If I were a betting person, I'd say they've broken up as the unit we know and love. Liz is really the one who quit the group, and now Simon and Robin are busy with their Bella Union label and its emerging artists (www.bellaunion.com). Their first release was Simon's first solo effort, "Blame Someone Else", which made my top ten list last year. If you have that cd or have heard it, you'll be interested to know that the ambient/electronica/trance (whatever label you would use) for the last track, features vocals by Robin Gutherie's new French wife. Latest rumor: there is a strong possibility Simon (and Robin) will be working with Anneli Drecker soon. But the nature of the collaboration isn't known, so please don't guess or assume that she would replace Liz. As for Liz, she is featured on a few trax from the Massive Attack "Mezzanine" cd (which I actually heard on the Movie Tunes tracks being played before a screening of "The Avengers"...so nice to hear Liz's voice in your local movie theater!) > did LIZ and ROBIN break up as well? They've been apart for quite awhile. Robin is remarried. Their daughter together is LucyBelle and doing fine, mostly living with Liz. And Liz has had another child recently, but I ain't tellin' who the daddy is! :-) > or did the band just break up? Yep, you got the timeline right! Oh, yes, if anyone has high quality bootlegs (preferably digital) of any live CT shows, Simon would like to check it out for possible inclusion in a *possible* compilation project done in conjunction with Ivo. Oh, yes...while I have strong reasons to believe CT is broken up, kaput, finis...ya never know, right? Look at Bauhaus...first they agree to put past disagreements behind them and try out a limited tour, it goes smashingly well, they add tour dates, and apparently they're discussing the possibility of going into the studio again. Anything's possible as well for our Cocteaus, imo. But indeed it's sad when one's fave bands break up...I was just starting to get over October Project's demise, then the CT breakup came along. Ah well, at least CT gave us 13 years of consistently beautiful music. Carol P.S. I've been having fun turning CT fans on to Happy's music, particularly MWABT. Two strong converts so far, another in the pipeline. I could use some other Happy cheerleaders over at www.cocteautwins.com, click on "forums", click on "Pandora's Box". Come and visit...hey, sometimes even Simon himself graces us with a message in the "box"! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 17:14:40 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Cocteau Twins breakup irvin lin wrote: > and can anyone out there tell me the whole story about the break up of >the COCTEAU TWINS? I liked her a lot immediately (as anyone at the legendary Vancouver Ectogathering of the Ne/a/i/l/e/s summer of '93 will attest--we had a tape machine at the gathering and I threw _songs about people and buildings_ on it and kept trying to get everyone to listen to it). It wasn't until I had started seeing her live and _spine_ was released that I was convinced that her technical range and emotional power and just the very crack-my-head-open nature of songs like "26 years" justified her inclusion in my personal goddess list. _spine_ tied with _boys for pele_ as my favourite album of 1994 and possibly my favourite album ever. It's the combination of willingness to take musical and emotional risks with killer hooks that get me every time. I don't expect everyone to like her, but as we know that's true of everyone we listen to here. Those who are into the more folk side will like _songs about people and buildings_. _path of a body_ is easier to take than _spine_. _spine_ is edgy and brilliant. _Here is a picture_ is the most amazing portrait of someone's artistic life that I can imagine. Different people will like different albums, but might consider starting from the beginning, at least on first listen if that's at all possible. - --Neile n.p. A former Fumbler (Michael Moore) is in the publishing business and when I contacted him, he put me in touch with one of the top editors from BOOK-OF-THE-MONTH CLUB in New York City. BOMC is now one of my regular clients. I read manuscripts and write reviews and recommendations for them. Then one day out of the blue, I received an e-mail from a West Virginia author named Michael D. McClellan. He asked if I would review a techno- thriller he had written and self-published. The name of the book is In Plane View and it's a wonderful book, especially for people who like to read about computer hacking. If you visit the website, you can read my FIRST PUBLISHED REVIEW!!! On the 26th of this month, I'll be heading down to Huntington, West Virginia, for McClellan's book signing at Renaissance Book Company. This will be our first meeting, and he'll be giving me the first 200+ pages of his next novel so that I can start editing them for him. Yes, I'm excited. ;-) So if anyone lives near there, the book signing is from 2 - 4pm on Saturday.....details are on Michael's website. Then to top it all off, one of my Stepford Wife neighbors gave my name to a local author (I didn't even know my little town *had* them!); he called me and I'm currently editing his first novel. Michael has offered to create a business website for me, so when it's ready for viewing, I'll send out the address. (Oh, but for now -- the name of my business is *the editor's mark*.) Anyway, I just wanted to share that with y'all.....and if you know of anyone who might need the services of a hard-working nit-picking freelance editor, send 'em my way, will ya? ;-) Jill :D ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 20:32:51 EDT From: Penta5@aol.com Subject: Boilding the Colossal Happy Sampler Making a Happy tape for a friend.
