Altan always puts on a brilliant live performance, but their show on Wednesday was the best one I have had the pleasure of witnessing. Maybe it was because they had just arrived in the US after spending a week back in Ireland, but the whole band was in extraordinarily high spirits. Mairead was positively giddy and even the usually dour Ciaran Curran cracked a few smiles during the show. The result of this mood was a show that was just crackling with energy, an energy that was boosted even more by the enthusiasm of the sell-out crowd. Mairead's voice never does much for me on Altan's CDs. I like it well enough, but I'm never blown away by it. I'm usually much more impressed by it live, and on Wednesday I was absolutely blown away. She sounded better than I had ever heard her, her singing being topped only by her amazingly skilled fiddle playing. The rest of the band was in fine form as well, particularly Ciaran Tourish who performed brilliantly on fiddle and tin whistles during the tunes and songs and was damned funny during the banter between. To make a spectacular show even better, those of us who attended early performance were invited to stay and see the second show as well (which had been added at the last minute), and while the second show didn't quite match the first it was still an excellent performance. During the two shows we were also treated to a few tunes that the band hadn't performed in a while, including "Tommy Bhetty's Waltz" (which was featured in the movie Good Will Hunting). I was thrilled by this because I had been listening to _The Red Crow_ on the way to the concert and had been wishing that they'd play that very tune! Anyway, if you like Irish traditional music do *not* miss Altan if they come to your area! As far as I'm know, I'm the only WPKN person on the list at this point, although several others have been on and off in the past. Kathy is wonderfully tuned in in other ways, so it wouldn't surprise me if she weren't somehow tuned into the Zeitgeist of the list even if she hadn't read the actual words. We are actually working towards getting RealAudio at this point. I know that a bunch of people are really anxious to get us on-line. I've been trying to get Meredith on my show for several months (years) now as a guest host. It almost happened last week, but I had to get an amniocentesis on the appointed day and had to get a sub for my show. I hope that if she gets back on the air as a guest she might get the radio jones again and go for her own show on the station (although it is true that on-air slots only open up when the previous programmer dies). Our current program director is particularly ecto friendly. - --Valerie meredith wrote: > > Kathy DiMena (sp?) and Ray Terlaga. Just to throw my 2 dinars into the WPKN/WFMU thread: I think woj described the differences between the two stations perfectly. Personally, I think WPKN is overall the more ectophilic station, simply because more often than not, when I turn it on I like what I hear. WFMU, on the other hand, strikes me as a bunch of overgrown 14-year-olds trying to outdo one another with how smugly bizarre they can be. I rarely turn WFMU on and hear something I like. But that's just me. :) Jon fonted: >And while I'm at it, if you see these other folks, that the >person with the Friday 6:45 to 8 pm slot ( (K)Cathy?) that she plays >fantastic music and also to the "skies of Bridgeport" person that follows. Kathy DiMena (sp?) and Ray Terlaga. Making Friday evenings a wonderful place to be for (how many?) years. :) Ray was in rare form tonight - he played Happy not once, but twice! I'm not sure if this was intentional, but he played the album version of "Roy", then a bit of really cool whalesong, then the radio mix of "Roy". I'd never heard the radio version before, and now that I have I understand better why it's the single. The radio version is shorter and has a much more prominent driving beat, with the bass more up front in the mix. It's pretty cool. And Ray still has the coolest voice on the airwaves. Most of the time I find myself not even paying attention to what he's saying, just enjoying the sound of it. >I'm sad that the formers slot is only an hour. I sure wish it was a lot >longer. Thankfully , though , "skies" continues the music in the same vein. The two shows do run beautifully together. Kathy's show often sounds like she read ecto for the previous week and took notes. Valerie Kraemer, do you know if she reads ecto? I really started to wonder when one Friday this spring she played a bit of Philip Glass and then some Steve Reich, which I've never heard on her show before, not three days after the conclusion of a mini-thread in these pages about those two composers. It was eerie. Not to mention Kathy is the person who once played 8 Happy songs in a row. :) Ray Terlaga did interview Happy on his show a couple years ago, but Kathy still wins the prize in my mind for doing that. It was just too cool. Back in June when she played cuts from the new Heather Nova album interspersed with various Kate Bush songs over the span of a half hour was pretty neat, too. The weird thing about Kathy, though, is that I often get the impression that the only music she listens to in her entire life is that one hour on Friday nights. She transposes artist and album names all the time, announces the titles of songs she didn't play (when she does try to give song titles, which isn't often), and mispronounces names left and right. After a while it moves past annoying and into endearing, though. :) The music is just too good. If I ever hit Powerball, I'll set WPKN up with a RealAudio server so the entire world can share the wealth. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ - --------------345C16001052BFB752814104-- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Sep 1998 16:06:32 -0700 From: deanorez@juno.com (G Perez) Subject: Weeks of Music Well, last week, I decided to see Pineforest Crunch at the Viper Room on their last show in the U.S. before heading back to Sweden. I love pop music but in their case, everything seemed too forced as if they labored over writing the perfect pop melody. As a result, the arrangements were convoluted and suffocating. Asa Eklund's voice is pretty (Annifrid Lyngstad or Merrill Bainbridge come to mind) but doesn't incite me to write anything else otherwise about it. They're on the more experimental side of Swedish indie-pop... Their manager gave me their presskit and both of their releases -- which I nearly anguished over the last week trying to get into. If you're a Swede-o-phile, they might be worth a listen. On Monday, Morcheeba was excellent at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre -- although I couldn't stay for their entire set because Eleni Mandell and LA's flavor of the month (and mine too), Remy Zero, were playing at the Viper Room. Give Remy Zero's new album, _Villa Elaine_ (DGC), a shot -- at least for the Jeff Buckley nods "Life in Rain" and "Fair." Meanwhile, on Tuesday, "The Buzz of the Hour," Teddy Thompson continued to fill Cafe Largo to its limits with his tender acoustic touch. If you read HITS Magazine, what they're writing is true. Everyone wants a piece of him. He's added to the obvious influence of his parents, Richard and Linda Thompson, and made quite an appealing homage to late 70's folk/rock. Anyone picture a Rufus Wainwright, Chris Stills, James Crosby, Teddy Thompson, etc. tour? Just as long as they don't include Adam Cohen (who put on the worst show I've seen this year back in July) on the bill, it could work. Emm Gryner and Bernard Butler were quite the one-two punch on Wednesday. Celebrating the tour's end, both artists illuminated the El Rey Theatre with songs mainly from their new albums. This first experience with Gryner hopefully won't be my last. Missed Ozomatli at the Santa Monica Pier to a see a friend's gallery opener on Thursday. I didn't feel like dancing anyway... Cindy Wasserman, on Friday, was probably the highlight of the week. Joined by members of The Young Dubliners and I think that was Paul Cantelon from The Wild Colonials she played an engaging mix of finely-crafted original material and covers (Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love," Concrete Blonde's "Tomorrow, Wendy," and Jeff Buckley's "Lover, You Should've Come Over"). She just might have opened the doors for steady appearances at The Mint. - --- Earlier this week I saw a posting of Susan James' upcoming tour. I highly recommend seeing her on this solo jaunt. Even though her shows with a full band (consisting of Abby Travis and Amy Wood) are one of those truly epic rock experiences, her voice matched one-on-one with her guitar is even more ear-inviting. She'll be back in the LA area in October/November time period for a Living Room show... Future sounds in LA: On 9/5, Eleni Mandell, Deborah Bartley, Dogpark, Melonie & Mick (3 Alarm Fire), and many others will be at Little Frida's Coffee House for a benefit show. $5/4pm-all night long... Also, as some of you know (or those of you that care), it's MTV Week in LA (Mayor Riordan even went as far as renaming Hollywood Blvd. to MTV Blvd... yikes) and 15 clubs are joining MTV for music showcases -- lots of surprise guests doing "secret" shows around town. I can't write who's going to be where but if you're smart you'll get in line early for the Sean Lennon and Asian Dub Foundation shows at the Viper Room -- as well as hanging around the Troubadour, Martini Lounge, Dragonfly, Opium Den, and the Garage... Also this week, Lisa Germano, Beth Orton, Lava Diva, Max Sharam, Angela McCluskey & Shark, Nashville Pussy, Tori Amos, Abby Travis, The Negro Problem, and Scarnella... WKCR (Columbia U. ) Had/has a program on in the late night/early morning slot called "Transfigured Night". I've been out of range for some years but when I did listen, that show would play some of the most incredibly, hair- raising, frightening, nightmare inducing music. Does anybody in the NYC area know of it? Woj? PKN staffers? I wonder if they still playing that kind of music. There website is just one page with no links or anything the last time I looked. This stuff must be all archived in their library. I'd like to get my ears on some of it. I wonder if they allow copying for personal usage. Happy Rhodes at MUSEUM OF RADIO & TELEVISION NY, NY I wonder if thats the part of the SilverCup Studio's in Astoria, not Manhattan. I forget. I'd go see her there. But I can't find the ambition to drag my butt into Manhattan. There is on Long Island the IMAC (media arts center ) in Huntington I wish a lot of these "smaller venue" artists would check that place out. look at me , I'm talking to my bloody self again. >Mike Mendelson wrote: >Went to see Suffragette tour in chicago and was underwelmed -- Jane sang >two songs (Love is everything -- the same song she sang last time in >chicago, and fisherman song or whatever its called). They ended with >midnight train to GA (is that what it's called)? This is my opinion. I been listening to J. Siberry since the early 80's. I think "Bound by the Beauty" is one of the most brilliant albums on this earth. But when I was in a music store and I saw "Maria", I was "oh boy" then I listened. I've tried to get into it over these several years, but I can't. It sounds to me like a lot of aimless Ooooh-ing and Aaaah-ing. But a couple of years later I found "The Walking" used for 5 bucks. That made up for it. :-) Sorry Jane, Im a big fan. But I aint diggin' much the solo piano & horn stuff much. I try , though, because its you. still talking to myself, I realize. I fell in love with K. Bush when I saw her on "Saturday Night Live" way back. "Hounds of Love" is her pinnacle, in my view. It is an unbelievable emotional roller coaster- ride. It is a stunningly great album. There is a book called "The Penguin Book of Rock&Roll Writing, I believe. Its not some gushy-gossipy book. Its a pretty heavy duty, intellectual style de-construction of music and the music biz. A thick book. There is a long chapter about K.B. mostly focusing on the meaning of "Hounds". Whether its true or not, it opened up that album in a whole new way. I can't listen to it without getting all choked up an tear-y eyed. Hows that for a middle-aged professional business person ;-) Finished.
