I quit about a year ago, because I found it too much off-topic mail). Here's the news (forwarded without permission): ======== begin forwarded message ======== Following is the track sequence for Suzanne's upcoming greatest hits package-titled "Tried and True". This album is currently scheduled for a September release in Europe. 1. Luka 2. Tom's Diner 3. Marlene on the Wall 4. Caramel 5. 99.9F 6. Small Blue Thing 7. Blood Makes Noise 8. Left of Center 9. In Liverpool 10. Gypsy 11. Book of Dreams 12. No Cheap Thrill 13. World Before Columbus 14. When Heroes Go Down 15. Queen and the Soldier 16. Book & a Cover 17. Rosemary ======== end forwarded message ======== So, two new tracks to look forward to. However, the local store couldn't find any info on this release yet, so I wonder when it will show up. No news yet about a US release. And I wonder what will happen to her plans to compile a cd with previously unreleased songs of her early days. Apparently she's working on a book that's to be published next year, and she'll be in Europe (London, UK I think) for an Amnesty International something in October. No more info, sorry. The Undertow archives can be found at http://www.vega.net/archive . Unfortunately, the website itself ( http://www.vega.nl ) hasn't been updated in ages, apparently due to legal problems. Which is sad, because it was a very very good site. My class only meets once a week. It's unlikely I can skip out. Mrs. Ditto and I went to Happy's prior Troy Music Hall concert and were a bit disappointed, because it is an acoustic space, and the sound system was not equal to the task. What we got to hear was a relatively poor sound system very, very clearly. I trust that this time around, steps will be taken. Perhaps Happy will dare to turn the whole system off for a song or two. You can hear an acoustic guitar from anywhere in the house, even when there's a body in every seat. The place is Ectoplasmically eerie... a haunted venue if there ever was one. After reading the ecto list for a while, I've decided to "Step Inside"! I'm {{DaveRaver}} and I discovered Happy 2 years ago thanks to Vickie Mapes and her wonderful website. I've been a Kate Bush fan since 1985, and I'm also into Tori Amos, Enya, Sarah McLachlan, Loreena McKennitt, Dar Williams, and various other "Ecto" artists. I collected Happy's first 9 albums within 6 months in 1996, and now, after a bit of searching, finally got a hold of "Many Worlds Are Born Tonight". I must say it is quite a wonderful work! As usual with most albums I buy, I wasn't overwhelmed the first time a played it, but with each consecutive listen, it has grown on me like ivy. The multi-layers of sound are quite towering! I'm a bit baffled by the lyrics though. In particular, the phrase "We will defend you no further" is repeated in two songs, "Tragic" (my favorite track) and "Proof". Who was defending whom? Does anyone know the story behind these lyrics? I get the feeling that all of the songs on this album fit a certain mood (melancholy science fiction) but did Happy have a larger story in mind which she based all these lyrics on? Or do we just let it flow like Tori's lyrics and not take them literally? Any thoughts? Just to throw my 2 dinars into the WPKN/WFMU thread: I think woj described the differences between the two stations perfectly. Personally, I think WPKN is overall the more ectophilic station, simply because more often than not, when I turn it on I like what I hear. WFMU, on the other hand, strikes me as a bunch of overgrown 14-year-olds trying to outdo one another with how smugly bizarre they can be. I rarely turn WFMU on and hear something I like. But that's just me. :) Jon fonted: >And while I'm at it, if you see these other folks, that the >person with the Friday 6:45 to 8 pm slot ( (K)Cathy?) that she plays >fantastic music and also to the "skies of Bridgeport" person that follows. Kathy DiMena (sp?) and Ray Terlaga. Making Friday evenings a wonderful place to be for (how many?) years. :) Ray was in rare form tonight - he played Happy not once, but twice! I'm not sure if this was intentional, but he played the album version of "Roy", then a bit of really cool whalesong, then the radio mix of "Roy". I'd never heard the radio version before, and now that I have I understand better why it's the single. The radio version is shorter and has a much more prominent driving beat, with the bass more up front in the mix. It's pretty cool. And Ray still has the coolest voice on the airwaves. Most of the time I find myself not even paying attention to what he's saying, just enjoying the sound of it. >I'm sad that the formers slot is only an hour. I sure wish it was a lot >longer. Thankfully , though , "skies" continues the music in the same vein. The two shows do run beautifully together. Kathy's show often sounds like she read ecto for the previous week and took notes. Valerie Kraemer, do you know if she reads ecto? I really started to wonder when one Friday this spring she played a bit of Philip Glass and then some Steve Reich, which I've never heard on her show before, not three days after the conclusion of a mini-thread in these pages about those two composers. It was eerie. Not to mention Kathy is the person who once played 8 Happy songs in a row. :) Ray Terlaga did interview Happy on his show a couple years ago, but Kathy still wins the prize in my mind for doing that. It was just too cool. Back in June when she played cuts from the new Heather Nova album interspersed with various Kate Bush songs over the span of a half hour was pretty neat, too. The weird thing about Kathy, though, is that I often get the impression that the only music she listens to in her entire life is that one hour on Friday nights. She transposes artist and album names all the time, announces the titles of songs she didn't play (when she does try to give song titles, which isn't often), and mispronounces names left and right. After a while it moves past annoying and into endearing, though. :) The music is just too good. If I ever hit Powerball, I'll set WPKN up with a RealAudio server so the entire world can share the wealth. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Sep 1998 23:20:12 -0400 From: "Michael Curry" Subject: Fw: RICHARD SHINDELL ANNOUNCEMENT: September 12th at The Bottom Line! - -----Original Message----- From: Young/Hunter Management To: richard-shindell-announce@shore.net Date: Friday, September 04, 1998 1:35 PM Subject: RICHARD SHINDELL ANNOUNCEMENT: September 12th at The Bottom Line! >Hey everyone, > >As the summer winds down, Richard is getting ready to do some really >exciting dates including a just-announced show at THE BOTTOM LINE in New >York City on September 12th (with David Poe and Amy Rigby), one at The Tin >Angel in Philadelphia on September 17th, and a great co-bill with THE >NIELDS at the Somerville Theatre (in Somerville, MA) on October 16th. >After some other solo shows (see tour schedule below), Richard will head >out with DAR WILLIAMS and LUCY KAPLANSKY as the trio, known collectively as >Cry Cry Cry, tours in support of their new album of cover songs which will >be released on October 13th on Razor and Tie Records.
