I have this record on vinyl, but have spent more than 10 years searching for it on CD... The vinyl is great but doesn't support the mastering/mixing job and when she lets loose on some really big loud high notes, it actually gives a bit of feedback... I'm a big fan of WFMU too and of many other stations throughout the country. I've had the occasion to spend a lot of time in Detroit over the last few years where I always listen to WDET. I'm sure a lot more of these stations will soon be available to all of us throughout the country through various technologies. I'd also like to be able to access radio stations of the past as I heard them at certain times in my life. For instance, I cut my radio and musical teeth listening to a very eclectic station from Georgetown University (WGTU??) when I was around 12 or 13. I think they changed very drastically not too soon afterwards (too radical for the Jesuits, perhaps). I think the big difference between WPKN and WFMU is that WPKN is a community station in the sense that all of the programming decisions are made from the bottom up by the 75+ individual programmers rather than having chunks of time every day of the week devoted to certain genres as it is at WFMU and most other stations. Inconsistent we are and inconsistent we will remain. On a related Ecto note: Our station manager, Harry Minot, and his wife, Ruth Eddy, were visiting some friends in Bearsville, NY, a couple of weekends ago. Said friends turned out to be next-door neighbors of Happy and Kevin. Harry was able to tour the recording studios and was, naturally, quite impressed. - --Valerie Kraemer (soon to be Valerie [Mrs. Radio Nothing] Richardson) - --------------E90BAEC73CA195DE6ACFF0FC Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Return-Path: Received: from siren.shore.net (siren.shore.net [207.244.124.5]) by igc7.igc.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id JAA28283 for ; Wed, 2 Sep 1998 09:10:18 -0700 (PDT) Received: from smoe.org [204.167.97.154] by siren.shore.net with esmtp (Exim) id 0zEFU2-0003fF-00; Wed, 2 Sep 1998 12:10:11 -0400 Received: from localhost (daemon@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) with SMTP id MAA25125; Wed, 2 Sep 1998 12:08:48 -0400 (EDT) Received: by smoe.org (bulk_mailer v1.10); Wed, 2 Sep 1998 12:08:48 -0400 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) id MAA25118 for ecto-outgoing; Wed, 2 Sep 1998 12:08:45 -0400 (EDT) Received: from vnet.villagenet.com (www.villagenet.com [205.136.35.2]) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-relay2) with ESMTP id MAA25114 for ; Wed, 2 Sep 1998 12:08:41 -0400 (EDT) From: jfrancis@villagenet.com Received: HReceived: from [207.124.147.197] (suffolk2-di197.villagenet.com [207.124.147.197]) by vnet.villagenet.com (ics mailserver) with ESMTP id MAA16526 for ; Wed, 2 Sep 1998 12:07:37 -0400 (EDT) Date: Wed, 2 Sep 1998 12:07:37 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: In-Reply-To: <199809020555.BAA15034@smoe.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" To: ecto@smoe.org Subject: Re: WFMU &WPKN Sender: owner-ecto@smoe.org Precedence: bulk >yup and yup. been a 'fmu listener since 1990 when i moved to new jersey and >a 'pkn listener as long as i've been driving in and around connecticut >(say, 1992 onwards) and living here (last autumn onwards). still listen to >'fmu on real audio with regularity. don't leave home without it. Yeah! When I lived in Queens, I listened to fmu since the late 70's and practically all the time till I moved to Long Island around '93. I really miss it. I haven't listened over the internet though, will try it right now. Unfortunately, I pay commercial rates and to have it on all day will skyrocket my bill. :-( It is(was) pretty much great 24 hours a day. I'd kill for a station like that that I was in range of. WPKN *could* be that way, I suppose, being listener sponsored but its a long way off, unfortunately. My favorites there are "Radio Nothing", "Leaving the 20th Century", the Saturday night 6pm-10pm and later slots and the Friday night 6:30pm - 10pm and later slots WFDU (Fairleigh Dikinson) had good music 1am till the mid-afternoon (they shared the frequency with WNYU) and all weekend. I'm hoping for the day soon, that all these stations can be broadcast via satellite or something so you can get them at any location. StonyBrook U. plays some decent stuff in the afternoons, some evenings and late night/early morning. This and wpkn also have some good blues shows. All in all a lot of music, but nothing like that quirky eclecticism of wfmu. *sigh* >by the way, deejays from both stations have, at various times (including >now), graced the ecto subscriber list. > >woj Come out, come out wherever you are....... ;-) Jon - --------------E90BAEC73CA195DE6ACFF0FC-- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Sep 1998 08:18:35 -0700 (PDT) From: Michael Bowman Subject: Ectophiles in Colorado? Marty, That's the same sentiment I have, that I'd like to be able to get an airfare deal, but at least I need to make that 14 day advance purchase, or otherwise I can't afford it. When I read the posting that the shows were going to be in October, I could almost hear the sound of Yngwe's heart breaking, all the way from Norway. Didn't he plan and buy airline tix around the announced Sept 24-26 dates? Oh, well... A request to the powers that be: is there any way that any/all confirmed dates can be announced once they are confirmed, or will you want to wait until all dates are confirmed to make the announcement in one batch? I strongly suggest that if an event if confirmed in any particular town, that it be announced pronto, so folks can make plans to get off work, buy tickets, get decent prices on hotels, etc. That is the way to fill up concert halls, too! > Also, if the concerts are in Philly (as others have suggested) is anyone there > willing to organize a group purchase and a possible get together ? OK, small correction: it's Jeff Pvar. :-) Anyway, I saw them play here about a month ago, and it was a wonderfully entertaining evening. As usual, I showed up at the Vogue early to get a decent position in line for the GA event. In doing so, I missed the opportunity to see David Crosby wandering around the local shops before the show. A friend bumped into him as he was crossing the street, and a casual greeting turned into a short conversation and ended with Crosby signing a couple of autographs while passing traffic ground to a halt waiting for him to leave the intersection. :-) In short, he was wonderfully personable. The show was a comfortable mix of fresh new songs and a few surprising old standards from the CSN days. Crosby's voice was never better (I've heard him sing before, during and after his rehab stints; the differences are notable) and the rapport with the band was superb. Jeff Pevar played a terrific lead guitar without stepping on David's limelight, and James Raymond is not only a fine pianist, but a backup vocalist second only to his father. The only distractions from a smoothly-run performance were a couple of loudmouthed drunks who seemed to think that David needed to be continually reminded that James was his son. After enduring a few tiringly monotonic intervals of trying to be heard over the drunks, David fixed them with his trademark scowl and said, "Hey, I appreciate the enthusiasm, but there are actually people here who are TRYING to LISTEN to the MUSIC down front; you're bugging them and you're distracting me. Could you COOL IT?" I have never actually seen a drunk slither away before, but these guys managed it. In addition to the CDs for sale, David had signed a number of copies of his autobiography and left them on the table. At cover price, I deemed them to be a worthy investment, and bought one during the short break. Afterward, they played some more new and old music, giving the audience a real show for the money. Overall, a fine time was had by all; and it was wonderful to see David Crosby in strong musical form again, not just living in the past, but moving on to new yet recognizably Crosby-like works. If you like his solo work at all, the new album won't be unpleasant to your ears. I know the live show was extremely professional and fun to watch. Worth the effort; definitely go see them if you can. - -- | Greg Dunn | "god money's not looking for the | | gregdunn@indy.net | cure. god money's not concerned | | gregdunn@aol.com | with the sick among the pure." | | http://www.indy.net/~gregdunn/ | Trent Reznor | ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Sep 1998 17:07:52 EDT From: Riphug@aol.com Subject: new to me....some canadian stuff (rather long) Several months ago, I discovered online a wonderful source of Canadian music -- IndiePool. Why do I like Canadian music, you ask? Well, mostly 'cause it's not the same ol', same ol' radio-played stuff you hear every day. And there's nothing like a relatively obscure musical artist to get me going! (Damn! Now they now my innermost secret!) So anyway, I've now ordered at least 17 cds from IndiePool (13 of them arrived today via UPS, prompting this post), and I have to tell you about them.....well, kind of. I'm really just going to list them and let those of you more familiar with these artists tell *me* about them (since that's faster than my actually listening to them all). My first order consisted of: Andrea Florian - Only Human (If you don't know Andrea, you *must* get this!) Coco Love Alcorn - Happy Pockets (I had ordered her eponymous album, which was quite jazzy -- Happy Pockets is much more of a pop/rock album. Both are very good!) Various Artists - News From Nowhere Various Artists - Live From the Press Club Various Artists - Indie Buzz - To Boot Various Artists - Nomad Music "Bears" (has Tara MacLean's "Clayoquat Song") And just because I ordered all of these (or maybe just because of my sparkling telephone personality) I received a complimentary copy of Indie Buzz - More -- a 2-CD set! I love to order these Various Artists compilations in order to try out the most music possible. I've found lots of treasures!!! Ok then, in the IndiePool order I received today: Dick 'n' Jane - self-titled Elle - Nympholepsy Andrea Fields - The Rooms in My House (I know this was mentioned on ecto before, so of course I had to try it! Good stuff! ;-)) Hennessey - Dig It Up Various Artists - Hidden Treasures/New Music West Holly Go Lightly - Means in Your Possession Mardi Jayde - Trapeze Northern Variations - In the Moon of Winter (a capella Xmas stuff) Tyley Ross - Treading Water Men in the Moon - self-titled Kelly Brock - self-titled (the absolute only reason I ordered this is because isn't she a movie actress? or am I thinking of someone else?) Susan Cogan - Space Age Primitives Various Artists - Indie Buzz - the Original (my freebie for ordering in mass quantities and because I'm their best customer) So this post is meant to be a conversation starter....if anyone has anything to contribute. ;-) And, Gregg (to whom this is cc'd)? Hi all, my father's been visiting from out-of-town so I haven't spent too much time at the computer. Now that I've packed him off back to Kansas, I wanted to say thank you to all the people who responded to me, on Ecto and in private e-mail. I'll get back to those of you who wrote me as soon as I can. You are great! I love this mailing list! Harvo's doing well and we're leaving in an hour or so to bring him back home. I'm scared (I've never taken care of a *really* sick person or animal) but I'm going to do my best. One great thing about getting so many supportive e-mails is that you all understood how frantic and upset I was. Some people (I won't mention any names but I usually call him "dad") just couldn't figure out why we didn't just put the cat to sleep, especially when we told him that we paid the 2 hospitals Harvo was/is at our rent money. Excuse me, the landlord can wait. Those who saved Harvo's life shouldn't have to. He frowned. We've had Harvo for close to 10 years, he's a member of our family! He just looked puzzled. Ok, so we're crazy! Ahh, yeah, that he understood. :-) (He's a great guy, really, but just thought we were a bit strange) Emily Perkins sent me the greatest URL. It's a site run by a physician who cares for 2 diabetic cats and it's crammed full of useful information and a message board to talk with others in the same situation. I haven't had a chance to look at it closely because of my dad's visit, but I'm going to pore over it later tonight. Here's the URL: http://216.25.15.224/felinediabetes/ Thank you Emily! When I did a search it was for cat diabetes or diabetes cats but I should have tried "feline diabetes" first. I didn't even think of it. Off to pick up Harvo! They have a "rental" on that date but no specific info on the Happy concert. Marty ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Sep 1998 18:23:20 -0700 From: "C. K. Are these dates confirmed 100%, no turnin' back? And when do tix go on sale? Can you Phillyites start calling to find out? Thanks! Now I've gotta rush out to polish my flyin' wings! Woo hoo! So which contingents of Ectophiles will be at which shows, and when can I start making Ectohostel reservations? I am very, very, very seriously considering going to at least one of these shows. I have money and vacation time to burn, and if Happy ends up coming to this coast anyway, then maybe I'll see her more than once on this tour anyway. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Sep 1998 18:56:14 -0700 From: "C. I would think that if you have money to burn, you'd stay at a big classy downtown hotel, rather than camp out at some hostel (although I hear there are some nice hostels in the redwoods in Oregon and Calif!) :-) Carol ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Sep 1998 19:09:50 -0400 From: Steve I Subject: Re: new to me....some canadian stuff (rather long) At 05:07 PM 9/3/98 -0400, Riphug@aol.com wrote: >Several months ago, I discovered online a wonderful source of Canadian >music -- IndiePool. A real bargain right now for you US folks with the Canadian dollar at a historic low... your YankeeBuck is now worth a CanuckBuck and half. >Andrea Florian - Only Human (If you don't know Andrea, you *must* get this!) >Coco Love Alcorn - Happy Pockets (I had ordered her eponymous album, which > was quite jazzy -- Happy Pockets is much more of a pop/rock album. The last time I saw her Kevin Fox opened for her, I can't remember if he also played in her band or not. >Hennessey - Dig It Up I have this one... Hennessey are an Ottawa-based band, and James M. and I saw their last show in Toronto, which was lots of fun. I find the CD a bit disappointing compared to their show. As far as their show goes though you either love 'em or hate 'em... James and I loved 'em, my friends who were along for the ride hated 'em. >Holly Go Lightly - Means in Your Possession I keep meaning to check her out.
