Not that I don't like Atlantic, but I can't help but see a conflict of interest and the potential for tremendous influence on this one. Sigh. - --- (As printed on CNN) Atlantic Taps Ubl to Leverage Power of Online Fan Network Entertainment Wire 31-AUG-98 NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Aug. 31, 1998-- Agreement Allows One-Stop Net Shopping for 411-Hungry Fans Atlantic Records has announced an agreement with the Ultimate Band List-- the web's premier, comprehensive music search engine-- to integrate the UBL fan site listings (www.UBL.com) within the Atlantic Records web site (www.atlantic-records.com). The UBL search capability, which has been running in test form since last week, will be fully available on the Atlantic Records site beginning September 1. The UBL search function will be a prominently featured co-branded service on the Atlantic website. As a result of this exciting new agreement, visitors to atlantic-records.com will be able to access the thousands of internet fan sites devoted to Atlantic recording artists. Search results will be presented in a separate browser window, which will include special banners with up-to-the-minute information on Atlantic artists and events. "The addition of the UBL to the Atlantic website is an important step in our continuing effort to enhance our on-line presence," said Atlantic Senior Vice President/New Media Karen Colamussi. "The UBL search capability dramatically increases the role of our site as the ultimate fan resource. In the information-rich world of the internet, the Atlantic website is an indispensable bookmark for all music lovers. The UBL provides Atlantic's audience with a seamless connection to a complete source of content, while driving traffic to both the UBL and Atlantic sites. We are pleased to be working in cooperation with such a forward-thinking company." "The thousands of fan sites which populate the internet serve as virtual 'street teams' waiting to be used by marketing and promotions staffs," said Steve Rennie, president of the UBL. "This agreement reflects Atlantic's commitment to making on-line marketing and the internet a regular part of their artist promotional efforts, and we look forward to working with them on additional new media initiatives." Created and maintained by ARTISTdirect, the UBL is the only on-line music resource of its kind, categorizing, indexing and organizing more than 100,000 music-oriented websites, as maintained by fans, record companies and other entertainment organizations. The service provides a searchable database of all websites relating to bands, record labels, on-line CD stores, concerts, ticket sales, tours, radio stations, contests, e-zines, chats, live broadcasts and on-line events. The UBL will soon be available in six languages, bringing a worldwide audience together with specially tailored bulletin boards, newsgroups and chat sessions. The UBL service regularly records more than 1.7 million unique visitors and six million page views each month. Founded by music industry innovators Don Muller and Mark Geiger, ARTISTdirect is a total music entertainment company designed to provide a direct connection between music artists and global consumers. ARTISTdirect is comprised of three synergistic music businesses: Talent Agency, Record Label and New Media company. ARTISTdirect is building a high-profile artist roster, a collection for music recordings and a new media portfolio- including the Ultimate Band List. In their music issue, Yahoo Internet Life named the Atlantic Records website one of the top ten music addresses on the web, while USA Today has dubbed the Atlantic site "a new kind of MTV." In keeping with its reputation for being at the cutting edge of music and internet technology, Atlantic is the first record company to open its own in-house studio for the purpose of delivering artists and music live to the internet. The state-of-the-art digital production facility had its formal christening on July 16, when Atlantic recording group Hootie & The Blowfish performed an exclusive in-studio, live-to-internet mini-concert. As was announced last month, September 1 will also mark the kick-off of the Atlantic-owned "INSTAVID," an online video channel created by the label in association with Seattle, Washington's RealNetworks Inc. The "INSTAVID" online video channel will effectively house hundreds of new and catalog artist videos (beginning with a library of more than 200), exclusive interviews, cybercast concert highlights and other live performances. "INSTAVID" extends Atlantic's cutting-edge association with RealNetworks Inc.- the recognized leader in streaming media- and will feature the new RealSystem G2 technology. Here (St. Louis), it was venue security, supposedly at Tori's request, that took the first two rows and allowed a controlled rush to the railing as soon as the music started - we were told by the guard near us about 15 minutes before the show what was going to take place. It left little choice for the rows behind. Supposedly, a few nights prior someone shouted to her to have the standers up front sit down and she replied with something to the effect of 'I can't - they've got ants in their pants they've got to get out'. > It's not a big deal though. By my eyes it seems Tori is very actively attempting to change the vibe at the shows. Intimacy and reverence aren't what she's after right now - she's out to put on a full-fledged rock show and from the look on her face throughout the show in St. Louis, she's never been having more fun in her life. I've seen her play better, I've heard her sing better, I've seen her put on shows that were more emotional, more playful, and more intense, but I've never seen her so happy up there. She's having a ball. Wonder if on some level she doesn't see it as some kind of vindication for the YKTR days. > I'm tired of jumping through hoops > to see Tori (staying out all night - twice, once for > tickets and then again for seats - for the pre-tour show, > and traveling to another city for this one) and not > getting to see much more than a glimpse of her. The forced overnight camping stuff on the pre-tour shows was slimy beyond words. Nothing more than hype at the fans expense. Notice how Atlantic hasn't covered one second of her tour since that pre-tour where they had cameras running up and down the lines outside and used the enthusiasm of fans to make the local news. They did put together a nice little promo reel of interviews with people under 4 layers of clothes sitting in their sleeping bags in dark, grafitti-covered alleys where they'd been passing hours in near-freezing temperatures. It's about the music. |-P > The music sure was good though. Did Tori have a band > with her? :-/ I've had enough bad experiences (with fans) at Riverport that I wasn't going unless I wound up fairly close. As luck would have it, I did stumble into good seats (if off to the left side) and it was one of the most enjoyable Torishows I've seen. Not only does she have a band, but they've gelled quite well now, following her lead on a nearly 4 minute classic Tori banshee improv at the end of The Waitress that sent chills throughout my body every bit as intense as those she sent through me while sitting 10 feet behind you at the Park West in 92 (just didn't get the impression she was looking directly at me every other song or so like that PW show ;) ). Yes, the shows have in many ways become more "events" than concerts and the fan base has, to a significant degree, gone way down hill. I read one account that I wouldn't have believed if I hadn't seen the same thing happen with my own eyes - while exiting the stage here she did her little wave to the crowd and reached out to touch hands of those pressing forward only to have someone lunge forward trying to grab her wrists to pull her into the crowd. But I'm wandering - guess what I'm trying to say is that it *really* IS about the music. Don't write the shows off because of the fans or asinine ticket policies. Don't Give Up. 8) Play the waiting game with the scalpers out front if you have to (hey - it's only the Devlin's you'll be missing ;) ), but she's still capable of putting on incredible shows - it's just a bit more difficult to enjoy them. After the wrist problems she had last tour, there's no way she's going to be able to play 5 shows in 3 days at smaller venues in the big cities anymore and I have to applaud her for adapting the show to the larger venues - any attempt to maintain an air of intimacy in an amphitheatre is destined for failure. bob np. Even at my age, I don't mind the crowds if its at a small enough venue and I can see the emotions on an artists face. At the larger venues, as I've done in the last few years, I just pay the price to sit up front. I got 4th row center for tori and it was worth every penny. And a dynamic show such as this, I think, I feed off of the crowd frenzy as I'm sure the artist does. OK.....so the audience is younger and a little goofy. I guess its in your attitude.....it just put a smile on my face. I had to stand up the whole show because the 3 rows in front of me were standing. I'm 50 and in relatively good shape and after I locked into the show I forgot I was standing. The larger venues, the crowds and all the other downsides are the price of fame. It won't happen on this CD but eventually Happy may go the same way. Memories are great but it's difficult to pass on seeing the newest music done live. YOU just have to adjust if your passion is high. And as you adeptly stated....it is about the music. fred ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #302 **************************
