Subject: Re: New Ecto Subscriber Hi, I've been a long-time subscriber to the Kate Bush mailing list and Happy Rhodes gets mentioned a lot over there. I just bought Happy's new CD which is only the second (so far) in my collection in addition to Rhodesongs. I can't say that she's my *favorite* or anything, but I am so mesmerized by her and find an amazing quality in her music rarely found elsewhere, so I was prompted (finally) to subscribe to Ecto and see what goes on around here. Being a "newbie", I have a couple of questions and I hope no one flames me for asking old questions. Unfortunately, my internet-access is not too reliable and I can only occasionally get access to the web, so I have been unable to access the Ecto FAQ in the past couple days. Therefore, I'm posing my question to the list. Question #1: When I *could* read the FAQ, I noticed it mentioned that Happy's "sign" is the Holy Spirit. Can someone explain this to me? Why is her sign the Holy Spirit? I'm curious. Question #2: Does Happy *ever* do concerts on the West Coast? (Southern Cali in particular?) Are any concert tours anticipated along with the release of this latest album? Thanks for putting up with me and any questions I may have asked that are old hat around here. :-) ~~~Samantha _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Ok, here's a resemblance I noticed. The first time I saw the cover of Loreena McKennett's "Book of Secrets", I thought she looked awfully like Happy. Maybe it's the angle at which the 'picture' is taken, or the fact that Loreena's hair is straight. Who knows... in no other picture that I've seen of Loreena does she look like Happy. Regards, Anna Lilith Fair Performers, Attendees Achieve Largest-Ever Synchronized Ovulation SALT LAKE CITY, UT--In what is believed to be the largest group ovulation in history, more than 20,000 Lilith Fair performers and attendees simultaneously released ova into their uteruses Tuesday. The collective egg-release, which took place at 11:24 p.m. MST, capped off a five-hour concert featuring such nurturing, supportive female artists as Paula Cole, Shawn Colvin, Natalie Merchant, and Lilith Fair founder Sarah McLachlan. "This mass ovulation is a celebration of our fertility. It's a celebration of our sisterhood," said McLachlan, her uterine wall lined with nutrient-rich blood. "By releasing these eggs, we recognize and honor our collective femininity." Singer Joan Osborne, who joined McLachlan in a duet of the McLachlan hit "Sweet Surrender" following the historic ovulation, called the experience "the most affirming of my life." "The energy radiated by everyone on stage and in the crowd was exhilarating. As a woman, I felt totally empowered," said Osborne, whose 1997 song "One Of Us" spent six weeks at the top of the charts. "My fallopian tubes are glowing." According to McLachlan, the synchronized ovulation, sponsored by Volkswagen, Starbucks and Bioré Pore Cleansing Strips, was successful because of the "incredibly supportive atmosphere" of the concert. "Everyone at the show was surrounded by other women who understand what they go through on a daily basis in this society," McLachlan said. "Knowing you have that kind of strong support system around you makes it that much easier to ovulate." Among the other artists who participated in the historic egg-release: Suzanne Vega, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls, Sheryl Crow, Meredith Brooks, Erykah Badu and Jewel. "To me, this is what Lilith Fair all about," Saliers said. "To be able to get up on that stage and imbed an ovum in your uterus in front of 20,000 screaming, fertile fans who are doing the same thing, well, that's just the ultimate." "I've never been around so many people who share my interest in women's issues and social justice," Jewel said. "It makes me want to ride my horse bareback through a forest stream." Fans were equally excited. "Without a doubt, that was the best concert I've ever been to," said Rebecca Roth of Ogden, UT, wearing her $27 "I Ovulated At Lilith Fair" souvenir T-shirt. "The Indigo Girls and Sheryl Crow and Natalie Merchant were all so amazing. And Sarah [McLachlan] looked beautiful. I have to get that skirt she was wearing." "I am going to be so sad when I menstruate my egg," fellow concertgoer Angela Hiller of Provo, UT, said. "I totally wish I could keep it inside me forever as a reminder of this special day." The Lilith Fair tour concludes Aug. 31 in Vancouver, British Columbia. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Aug 1998 18:10:26 -0700 (PDT) From: Old Spice Subject: Re: Lilith Tour Touche ...," said McLachlan, her uterine wall lined with nutrient-rich blood.... ...the synchronized ovulation, sponsored by Volkswagen, Starbucks and Bioré Pore Cleansing Strips ...," Jewel said. Yes and no. This is *very* clearly a continuation of the road Happy started on with her 6(?) tracks for the Ambient collections. But it's rather different from BtC -- she accomplishes what I suspect she wanted to do there, but didn't quite pull off (quite obviously, in MY opinion! ;-). > Now she's matured, she's mastered so much technique that she is > imho coming into her own as a full-fledged electronica artist. Yup. Way back when, when Kevin wrote to ecto about the Ambient collections (must have been in fall '95), he made some comment about how scary-good Happy was "at this stuff." I really think that having to work within an essentially instrumental, ambient metaphor prepared her to create MWABT. At this point, I just wish she would have included an instrumental or two on the new album! > > Except, ok, I'm still not into "Roy" but I'm not giving up on it yet. I love > > the middle instrumental section, but can't handle the repetition of the > > lyrics. > > Vickie, I didn't want to be a detractor in any way, but I don't like Roy much > either. Listen again, listen again! When I first heard the sample that Samson posted a month+ ago, I actually *worried*, very briefly, about what I would think of the new album. On first listen, I found "Roy" to be the least interesting song on the album, and I suppose it stayed as such for my first several times through...'til one day when I caught myself singing the chorus. > > I hate to say it (Happy forgive me), but it's too simplistic for > > me. Blade Runner is one of my all-time favorite films (in the top 5) and > > I don't think that Happy did the movie or the character of Roy justice. I don't think this is particularly fair; I *love* the way she reveals Roy's character. Sparsely, to be sure, but the words she's chosen to use, to me, are incredibly evocative. The different voices, the pleading, the frustration of realizing you're perhaps more human that you'd realized, thanks to your mortality, and also thanks to your "birthright." Also note that the song has lyrics that *aren't* printed -- the heavily distorted stuff after the call-and-response voice and violin section, before the violin solo. "I'm afraid to close my eyes." Wow. *My* only quibble with the song is the grammatical error --"four short years does not a life time make." Am I the only one who's reminded of the end of "Walk Straight Down the Middle" by Happys "bird call" during the call-and-response section? > Frankly I think it was a mistake to make Roy > the single...who is the intended audience for this song? You can't dance to > it...too many tempo changes that leave folks standing, awkward, on the dance > floor. I, too, wonder who the intended audience is, though I think that "Roy" was a good choice in that it *does* have a _killer_ hook. > And after all, the music business *is* a > business, and if an artist doesnt sell "X" amount of units, they may not get > that contract renewed (or bettered.) Perhaps, but Samson *did* sign a _five_ record deal with Happy. ;-) (which is not to say they couldn't break it if they really wanted to; look at so many other artists who've gotten screwed by the squid) > All are much more danceable than Roy. > (Many hit songs are broken by d.j.'s and at dance clubs these days.) There > > are worse song viruses to catch. > > Tis true! Luckily, the song that keeps going through my mind is "Ra", > which is my fave. I'll claim "Tragic" because I just can't get "I see you because you are tragic / and I need you for the same" out of my head. Though "Looking Over Cliffs", with "Anywhere you go / here or beyond / nothing can stop me from finding what dream you're on" (er, did I get that right?) is a *real* close contender. That verse just flips me out, both lyrically and in its delivery. > > You're certainly not the only one. I loved it from day one, and listen to > > it often. Honestly, I'm not all that crazy about "Glory" or "Collective Heart." The songs that work best for me on BtC are "Just Like Tivoli", first and foremost, and then probably "Down, Down" and "You Never Told Me." Y'know, all this talk about MWABT means I should probably pull it out next. jeff np: _Jews With Horns_ / Klezmatics - -- |Jeffrey C.
