First from Tom: > ...[In] Thursday's New York Times (I'm usually a day behind on newspapers :-), > there was an article titled "Compiling Your 'Greatest Hits' on Disk." In this > article, our very own Philip David Morgan was featured in the article, as was > Happy (as mentioned quite noticeably). Being a little shy Mr Morgan? :-) > Naaahh.... I'd figure someone in Ectoland would find the piece soon enough. All I had to do was wait. ;-) The piece is availible for viewing on the _Times'_ own website, along with reviews of four of the nine or so custom CD places on line (the next one is being set up by, of all outfits, K-Tel). http://www.nytimes.com/ Those who've been Netscaped can visit Netcenter and subscribe to the _Times_ there, along with other newspapers gone cyber. Just for the record, I should clarify that I heard Happy's "Save Our Souls" on _Echoes_ in 1996, quite by chance. A few days later, _The Keep_ turned up in my local Borders, along with a few other AG albums. Also, I need to point out that I didn't mean to imply that buying _The Keep_ wouldn't be "swift." Just the notion of buying an album - _any_ album - for a single track in particular. The way the entertainment biz is run, though, only guarantees that non-swiftness will continue to be a way of life. Personally, I'd love to see Richard Branson and his Virgin empire be the next to offer custom CDs - or do Liquid Audio, which I hear may be the next step forward. Their Megastores have an on-line presence, so re-tooling the site would be no sweat. I suggest that they sample from each of the sites currently "burning" discs so they'll know what (not) to do. And they're experts in marketing, if the overall success their "Best [Albums] in the World...Ever!" comps is any indication. And more than any other firm (excepting maybe K-Tel - we'll have to see), they might be able to make the big names come around. Besides, if the majors don't volunteer material now, the market will force them to later. (Vickie: _Echoes_ is from Public Radio International or PRI, not PBS. Although there are times when I fantasize Conservatives scheming to merge NPR, PRI, and PBS into one single entity and then selling it to the highest bidder.) Back to Tom: > In the same section (Circuits), a nice review of a new CD-ROM based on Nick > Bantock's Griffin and Sabine books. Titled "Ceremony of Innocence" it looks > quite intriguing and was extremely well reviewed. I'm a Bantock nut. I want it. I want Virgin or CompUSA to stock it NOW. Philip David (still dealing with the retail store bugaboo) 8/22-23/1998 N.P.(you just have to believe this): _All New - The Best Footie Anthems in the World....Ever!_ (EMI-Virgin import, soccer anthems and adopted pop) (bought out of fascination with a music video of one track featured on the comp, playing on the video screens of one Virgin store - plus ça change...) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Aug 1998 01:01:18 -0400 (EDT) From: Neal Copperman Subject: quiet me I was going to write a nice Veda Hille review and probably post things before I left for Albuquerque on Wednesday, but this morning my monitor blew out and I probably won't have reliable access for a while. Anyway, Kinnie Starr and Veda were great. opener Laura Mann wasn't. By the time Veda came on, I think Doug and I were the only paying members of the audience left. We dragged a table to the front of the stage, and occassionally asked for songs that she'd immediately play for us. (My requests were Precious Heart and Driven. Kinnie Starr requested 26 years.) The show was a lot of fun, and Veda came over and chatted with us for about 10 minutes when she was done playing. Laura Mann played for over an hour, while Veda and Kinnie each only played for about 20 minutes. (Figures, huh?) Well, hope to find my way on-line again soon. I was toying with going to CompUSA and buying a monitor tomorrow and returning it on Wednesday before I left town :) Neal ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #290 **************************
