Hell, maybe I'll just go out and by the rest of y'all > an album, too! > Hee-hee! > Indeed it is somewhat tricky to track down Happy stuff outside the US. Here in the UK it's almost impossible. Up to a year or two ago, the big HMV on Oxford Street in London used to have a selection of Happy CDs, variously filed under 'H' or 'R' (varied from week to week). However, last few times I've been in I didn't spot anything. I picked up "Equipoise" on hideously expensive import there, but got hold of BtC on a business trip to the States. Talking of which, I'll be in the sweatbox which is Dallas for a couple of days next week, starting Tuesday, so I may be able to pick up MWABT. No I'm not offering to pick it up for other UK folks - I can't guarantee I'll have chance to do any shopping. Well, cheerio! Thanks. ;-) ****************************************************************************** ******************* I received my copy of this 368-page softcover book in yesterday's mail and although I haven't sat down to read it cover to cover yet, it looks pretty good. It includes lots of black and white portraits of each artist. Here are the artists who tell about their lives and how they got started in music. In order of appearance: Sarah McLachlan/Shawn Colvin/Jonatha Brooke/Cassandra Wilson/ Ani DiFranco/Mary Lou Lord/Mary Chapin Carpenter/Suzanne Vega/ Holly Palmer/Joan Osborne/Lucy Kaplansky/Jewel/Rosanne Cash/ Dionne Farris/Sheryl Crow/Lucinda Williams/Catie Curtis/ Kate Campbell/Rosanne Raneri According to the authors, the books was written in response to the often-heard complaint that there is now a glut of female artists. Here's a brief excerpt from the introduction: "SOLO provides the space for each artist to exercise her singular way of saying things. Why should we assume that the experiences of Suzanne Vega, who grew up in East Harlem to the taunts of 'You're the whitest girl I've ever seen,' and those of Kate Campbell who was raised as the daughter of a socially progressive Baptist preacher in rural Mississippi, would somehow say the same things?.....It's this rich variety that defines these women who have so masterfuly responded to their worlds with indelible takes on what it means to be human. These artists are far more serious about their work than they are generally given credit for, however much their music is lauded, and more insightful about subjects as far-flung as politics, aesthetics, and love, both in and outside their songs, than we could know from short reviews crowded under attention-grabbing headlines. Whether it's dionne Farris speaking about the limitations she's faced......or Jewel reflecting on her unexpected celebrity..., the depth, intelligence, and self-searching expressed here are the sources, in such eclectic and provocative ways, for the music itself. It's no surprise that the writers who give our own emotions and experiences shape through their songs convey such substance and insight, as if implicitly rejecting the skewed values of a pop world more likely to notice a steel brassiere than a literate turn of phrase...." The authors are Emma Dodge Hanson and Marc Woodworth, who "live on a farm near Saratoga Springs, New York. Emma is a photographer whose portraits of artists and writers have appeared in The New York Times, Poets and Writers, USA Today, The Oxford American, and elsewhere. Marc is associated editor of Salmagundi and lectures in the Department of English at Skidmore College. His poems appear in The Paris Review and other magazines. This is their first book." She's my boyfriend's favorite performer, and she does have a phenomenal voice. I must admit I was completely blown away by her fabulousness! I can even make this slightly ecto related because during Patti's show I was trying to think of what other concerts I had been too where I had been so blown away both mentally and emotionally by the performance. Happy is very, VERY intense live. Her voice is just so beyond amazing, that I'd be perfectly content to see her solo in a living room. Add Kevin on guitar/e-bow, and it's just totally over the top. They have a LOT of Happy's back catalog in stock; at least one of just about every album and several copies of two or three. One copy of *Equipoise* had a gold sticker on it with some phrase like "An Extraordinary Listening Value." Behind the plastic bin divider with Happy's name on it there was a yellow paper insert sticking up with "PULSE" across the top, the John DiLiberto quote about Happy being a cyber-troubadour, and the four stars given to *Many Worlds.* It's nice to see the big push. I'm especially surprised at how well Happy's >voice in it's total range is featured on this album and how beautiful >some of the vocal arrangements are. I never really noticed that >before. :-) This brings up something I've been wondering about for a long time. The Happy albums I have so far are Rhodes I, Rearmament, Ecto, Warpaint, Rhodesongs and The Keep, and of these my favourite is definitely Rearmament. However it seems that most people consider this to be the least accomplished album from Happy, and I just can't understand why. Perhaps its because to me Happy's strongest songs are those where she lets her vocals shine, while others prefer the studio polish of later albums. My fave Happy tracks on Rearmament are I Am A Legend, Friend You'll Be, The Issue Is, Dreams Are, I Have A Heart, Because I Learn, Baby Don't Go and Be Careful What You Say. These are all among my favourite Happy songs period, and as far as I can see they don't suffer at all in comparison - they are rythmic yet melodic, deep yet buoyant, and all overlaid with Happy's fantastic vocals. When I got Ecto just over a month ago, I was almost disappointed that instead of continuing in this style, she had opted for a more downtempo approach, which although still excellent, did not have (excepting the brilliant bonus tracks) all the fantastic vocals and powerful percussion I loved on Rearmament. Am I the only one who feels that Rearmament is *clearly* the highlight of Happy's early (pre-Warpaint) career? As of a couple of years ago (is it that long already?) two best used CD places were on Greenville Avenue just north of ... uh ... Lovers Lane? My favorite, is also on Greenville, just south of ... uh ... the same street?... in the same complex as Java Joes. (MooMan, are you out there? Do you remember this stuff?) There's also the mothership of Half Price Books, a huge used book and CD store, just north and a little east of those.
