Not to belittle the problem, but here's a site that REALLY deserves our wrath: There's a site in Sweden (I think) that uses Happy to lure people to a PORNOGRAPHIC site. I'd like to enlist your help in bringing down this despicable website. I'd particularly like to enlist the help of any ectophiles who can read Swedish... They're using a page filled with thousands of names (691K!!!) to get listed in thousands of search engine queries, and the single link on the page leads to a web page full of explicit pornographic advertising banners, which may pay per downloading of the page. The page appeared to have no content at all. I was alerted to this website by Sarah Slean's manager, who found this page while doing a search on Sarah on Altavista. Naturally she was outraged that Sarah's name be associated with pornography. But Sarah's isn't the only name listed there, among the other thousands of names listed is our own Happy's... so is Veda Hille, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Susan Werner, the nields, Dar, Lucinda, and Victoria Williams, Emm Gryner, Tara Maclean... you get the idea. Where they got the names of all the obscure artists on their list I haven't a clue... But the list is by no means restricted to musical artists. There are a great number of search terms that might be used by children: disney sesame street big bird charlie brown snoopy the smurfs dr. seuss grinch brady bunch cartoon Elmer Fudd Elmo Raffi Mr. Rogers santa sharon lois and bram richie rich bananas in pyjamas This is the internet at its ugliest. The offending URL is: http://w1.322.telia.com/~u32204454/porno/ublist.htm I tried going down to the root URL, http://w1.322.telia.com/ but it's in Swedish (?) and I can't make heads or tails of it, so I haven't a clue where to go to complain about this slimeball's site. If anyone could point me in the right direction I'd be extremely grateful (I'd also be grateful if you guys could also send some emails of complaint, maybe we can shut down this vile site, or at least make him remove that file. I've already emailed Altavista about this spamming of their index, hopefully they'll look into it soon and remove the listing. But that's a bandaid solution, all the person has to do is move their web page or even just rename the file and get it re-indexed... I'd really like to see this abominable site removed from the net. Yes, it is indeed in Swedish. The link on the above-mentioned page with the text "Lämna synpunkter" is for sending comments via e-mail to synpunkter.personliga_hemsidor@internet.telia.com which is some sort of home page feedback address. That would probably be the best channel to try first. They also have a feedback form that puts you in contact with their webmaster, but I think that's supposed to be used mainly to give feedback on how Telia's own pages are designed. I don't think it would hurt to use that one too, in case nothing happens after we try the above address. (The webmaster feedback form can be found by following the link at the bottom of the root page (with the text "Vanliga frågor och svar"). This will get you to http://www.internet.telia.com/support/ . Select "Kontakt" from the graphic menu at the top of that page and follow the "kontakta webmaster" link. The three texts fields are for "Your Name", "Your E-mail Address", and "Your Message", respectively. "Skicka" means "Send".) Just about to drop them a note myself now... Juha n.p. You make it sound as if we're only nagging on Samson because it's "complex." Nothing could be further from the truth. Any site can be the most complex place around, heavily use audio, video, zippy animations, buttloads of graphics, whatever, and I won't care - *IF* any pure information that is on the site is accessible and the site is easy to navigate to anyone who goes there. No one goes to a net radio site without a sound card and then complains because they can't hear the music! But if that same site had linked biographies of each artist they play, a person without a sound card could go there and read the bios, if that information is accessible, even though the visitor doesn't have a sound card. Listen, I just went to the Spinner page and looked around. It let me do that, even though I don't have a sound card. Now I can see what's there and go back when I do have the right stuff. If Spinner had stopped me at the front page, told me I didn't have the right equipment to enter the site, and then presented me with a blank page, the way Samson does, I'd never go back, no matter what. I'm so hurt. You categorize me as just "anti-Samson"? I think Samson is wonderful...BUT: I can not enter the Samson web site. It will not let me enter the front door. I can not see the Samson web site. I am SHUT OUT of the Samson web site. Don't you get it?? If I'm shut out then others are too! I certainly don't need information about Happy. I've got all I want. All of this discussion about the Samson site has been roughly divided into two camps, but I would hardly call them the pro-Samson crowd and the anti-Samson crowd. I think we're all pro-Samson. The division, insofar as there is one, seems to be between those who think Samson should be satisfied to reach the people who have all the requisite tools to view the site, and those who think that Samson should make the site more easily accessible by people who do _not_ have all those tools. The only thing anyone may "anti-" is the designer of the Samson site, who has not, in the perspective of some of us, done well by Samson by reducing the availability of the informatin Samson is trying to get out. Overall, a pretty pro-Samson sentiment, if you ask me. - --charley _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Oooh, I'm sorry I didn't get to reading this before Falcon Ridge! Did you know that Laura Love did another show the following evening at The Iron Horse? We left Falcon Ridge a little early on Sunday, about 5pm, to catch that. From when I first heard a Laura Love album, I could tell she'd be amazing in concert. I remember missing Falcon Ridge 1995, I don't remember why, and missing my first chance to see her :( Finally got my next chance less than a year ago, at the Somerville Theatre. I was very pleasantly surprised to learn that Barbara Lamb was in the band, I've been a fan of hers since she was in Ranch Romance and really started noticing her when her first solo album, Fiddle Fatale, came out. If I had a fiddle/violin pantheon, she'd be on it (along with Mark O'Connor, Stuart Duncan, Doug Cameron, Natalie MacMaster, Johnny Cunningham, and a few others). And Julie Wolf, who I'd never heard of before, really caught my attention. I was surprised when I saw Ani this April to see Julie Wolf in her band. A good addition, but it's too bad she's no longer in Laura Love's band, because the two of them made the *cutest* combination I have ever seen on a stage (not in looks, but in how they acted & played - it was incredibly *cute*!). This weekend was #2 (Falcon Ridge) and #3 (Iron Horse) for me, as far as Laura Love shows go. I think the Iron Horse show was better, but that might be because I was more awake, less cold, and the show was longer. Saturday night at Falcon Ridge was pretty impressive. As usual, though, I think I enjoyed some of the workshop stage shows more than the mainstage. Particularly the two songwriting process workshop shows, where we got to hear people like Jack Hardy, Richard Shindell, Dar Williams, David Nields, and Nerissa Nields talk about songwriting and tell amusing and interesting anecdotes before each song, and the "sweet harmony" show where we got to see The Nields & The Bobs sing together *twice*. For me one of the best things about a folk festival, as opposed to just happening to see all those artists at separate shows, is that the artists are all there together and it opens up new possibilities that aren't there at separate shows. Saturday night on the main stage had some examples of this too. Artists like Dar Williams and The Nields have some great guests appear on their recordings, but they're not the kind of guests you can have follow you on tour just to sing backup one one song. At Falcon Ridge, they can. Dar Williams called Richard Shindell on stage for one song, The Nields sisters for two others, and The Nields got Dar for a song in their set, and Gideon Freudmann (mentioned in my previous "pantheon" post as my god of the cello) for another. Maybe if Laura Love Band and Ani Difranco play the same festival someone, We'll get to see Julie Wolf perform with Laura Love Band again. np: We Saw The Wolf - On The Shore [independent] This is a local band formed by Andy Nagy, WBRS's longest running DJ, who's been doing a celtic show for over 20 years. We Saw The Wolf is a blend of heavy metal / death rock and celtic / roots folk. And speaking of Johnny Cunningham, he plays on this album. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Jul 1998 16:15:22 -0500 (CDT) From: Michael Curry Subject: Re: Laura Love & Falcon Ridge (was Re Various) On Wed, 29 Jul 1998, Ofer Inbar wrote: > Oooh, I'm sorry I didn't get to reading this before Falcon Ridge! As for Barbara Lamb... if that was her on stage with Laura on Saturday then I'd say whatever her talents they were completely wasted by the arrangements used. I was really underwhelmed by the violin's contribution to the band to say the least. This is Ryan from Love Spirals Downwards and here's what's happening with us. First, I must apologize to those of you may have written to us long ago and haven't received a reply until now. The amount of band email we receive continues to grow and it has been tough for us to keep up with replies. We do read everything and enjoy getting your letters. So please keep sending us email! Don't mistake our being extremely busy for not appreciating your letters! FLUX The release of our new album 'Flux' is just weeks away, on August 11. You should be able to easily find it in Tower Records and Borders Books and Music, and it will be in listening stations in many of those stores as well. Already 'Flux' has been receiving good attention fom the music press. Scott Becker, editor of Option magazine, writes: "A great, contemporary record. Due in August, 'flux' sounds like a more genuine version of what Mono was aiming for: a pop-electronic fusion with a gentle jungle undertow. It's one of the best things I've heard in months, and you'd be wise to get your hands on a copy quick." Our label, Projekt, is accepting orders. You can get 'Flux' for $14 and if you order by August 11th (with order code #58) they'll cover the postage. You can order three ways: 1. SNAIL MAIL: Projekt. Box 166155. Chicago IL 60616 2. PHONE: 1-800-CD-LASER (credit card only) 3. EMAIL: order@projekt.com (credit card only) If you haven't been to our Love Spirals site in a while, http://www.projekt.com/bands/lsd.html, you can find more information there about us and 'Flux'. And, if you'd like to hear some audio from 'Flux', check out the sound files on our Audio page at http://www.projekt.com/bands/lsd/lsdaudio.html LIVE Our last show at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles went great and thanks to everybody that made it there. Right now we don't have any shows scheduled but several are being discussed. All of this is still very tentative but there may be shows in Los Angeles in September, Chicago in October, and Mexico City in February. The best way to keep up on the latest news is to periodically check our news page at http://www.projekt.com/bands/lsd/lsdnews.html LYRICS The most often asked question that we receive in email is whether we make our lyrics available. We're sorry to say that we don't have lyrics to send. Suzanne keeps them hidden away and I rarely even see them. Sorry. THE WEBSITE There will be record release give-aways for 'Flux' at clubs around the country and I may be doing a few guest DJ spots as well. Again, please check back at our website, http://www.projekt.com/bands/lsd.html, for the latest on 'Flux' and what we're up to. I'll make all new information available on our News page as soon as things get confirmed. I am no web >>page programmer, but the site seems pretty complex! > >Ok, I love you to death Bob, but this *really* hurts. You make it >sound as if we're only nagging on Samson because it's "complex." >Nothing could be further from the truth. Ow! I never meant to impugn the veracity of your crusade to make Samson accessable to all comers! I knew that there were a lot of experienced Web Designers on Ecto who were tearing the Samson programming apart, and I had a feeling Spinner was too complex for its own good - it was sending info updates which "jammed" the streaming audio, and I expected to hear some criticism of that. I never meant to imply that Vickie's crusade was trivial, and I deeply apologize for making you feel it was a personal attack! Nothing could be farther from the truth. While I like the concept of Spinner a lot, I find the execution less than ideal for a 33.6 bandwidth! >I'm so hurt. You categorize me as just "anti-Samson"? I think >Samson is wonderful...BUT: > >I can not enter the Samson web site. >It will not let me enter the front door. >I can not see the Samson web site. >I am SHUT OUT of the Samson web site. And while I could access Spinner and hear the music, it was constantly stopped by some info coming down the pipeline to update the page! I was complaining about a similar but less total design flaw. Well, I wasn't really complaining very much, but I did mention the jamming and expected some more polished web-hounds to address that flaw. Again, this was never meant to be a personal attack on anybody!!!! > >Don't you get it?? If I'm shut out then others are too! >I certainly don't need information about Happy. I've got all >I want. People new to Happy *will* need information about >her. Are you and some other people really so selfish as to >not want others to access information about Happy?? Yikes! Of course I want all comers to be able to get information! Now I am hurt, too, because this was never intended as a flame to you! I simply found an interesting site with what seemed like a good premise, but I was having a small problem with the site jamming itself. Thinking it was a design flaw similar to but less fatal than Samson's, I posted: >> I don't think the anti-Samson crowd will appreciate it. I am no web >>page programmer, but the site seems pretty complex! hoping some of you would investigate the site and see if you agreed with me. My biggest mistake was saying "Anti-Samson crowd" which I admit on retrospection to be blunt. I should have said "group of people who are concerned about web technology overtaking common sense". Certainly no one is against Samson here and my wording was poor. I deeply apologise and will try not to write in shortcuts any more. > >I just can't believe that. Think about it. > >Vickie If I'd thought about it I would have certainly phrased it better. As Curly once said, "I'm trying to think but nothing happens!" LETTER FROM THE BRIDGE Hello. Jane Siberry here. =20 SHEEBA has moved. New phone! 416-921-1364. New fax! 416-921-0024.=20 Same box #. This is Pipeline #6 - the 6th since January 1998 and the 6th of a series written personally (and by myself). I hope you enjoy it. If you just signed up and anything seems too cryptic, you might like to check out some past Pipelines that may make sense of an obscure reference. http://www.sheeba.ca/pipeline.html Writing these letters to both familiar and unfamiliar readers is a bit tricky - not assuming that you know everything that has been going on but not wanting to say anything twice. But I will do my best. I must say I am enjoying writing these. Often it is late at night and the world is quiet and when I press the send button I feel a grid extending out across the world as you all are sleeping, dreaming, getting up, it's morning for you. And just as I'm wondering whether it's a rabbit you are chasing, a camera crew comes along and pronounces you a tide pool causing me to shift my gaze away with respect for your privacy.=20 Anyway, I continue to read and enjoy the most funny, beautiful, and sometimes stunningly articulate letters from you. Sometimes I feel YOU should be writing the songs, not me. You do? They are? I'm not? On the 'REDUCE TO EXPAND' front, I continue to tie up all loose ends after taking the reins in January. Trying to make SHEEBA as simplified as possible. This means SHEEBA is becoming almost totally e-mail/internet-based, very little store distribution, publicity, no publicists, no manager, no agents, no nothing. I seem to have lost all interest in that whole area. I am deeply aware and appreciative that this would not be possible without your support. I hope it is all worthwhile for everybody. I feel different. I am a different person than half a year ago. I have never cleaned so much in my life. I have used it as a discipline to get myself on track and past various difficulties. And I feel I am looking at people with different eyes, different respect, different curiosity. I would ask you very different questions if we ever met at a cocktail party. Do you file back to front or front to back? I would ask you what are the fewest telephone call-answer options are that you could live with. I wouldn't say anything immediately after your response. I would tell you about the bookkeeper who quietly unlocked her desk drawer and peered into it every morning for twenty five years. Peered, closed, locked, began work. When she died, the staff gathered around the drawer. Inside was a simple piece of paper that said "Debit left Credit right". (pause)=20 I would ply you with questions about systems, about grammar, about ... oh, excuse me, a phone call. J: Good morning, SHEEBA. =20 Z: ... Uh, hullo? =20 J: Yes, SHEEBA here. What do you want?=20 Z: Uh, I have a question about Jane Siberry... =20 J: Good. Jane here to verify any nasty rumours.=20 Z: ... Is this Jane? =20 J: (silence). Yes.=20 Z: Well, I'm calling from the Times and want to verify some facts. =20 J: With whom shall I say is calling? =20 Z: (silence). =20 Anyway, someone caught me by surprise the other day and said they heard that SHEEBA was going bankrupt and all kinds of other crazy things, which I, of course, confirmed. I also added that I was having Yanni's baby, illegally auctioning Madonna's bra on my website, performing honky-tonk in Northern Ontario under the name of Nelle Young, being fined for Intuitive Merchandising to minors and going into the closet. =20 =09 J: Are you still there? =09 So, take everything you read about me as possible but not necessarily and very unlikely truly fact. But know that: SHEEBA is very much alive and thriving. No bankruptcy. As a matter of fact, I can't think of a better way to not sleep at night. And no, I am not involved in any court actions. However, know that my bullshit threshold is VERY VERY low at this time. Including my own. A good time to keep these thoughts private. Or to release internationally on CD, I suppose. B. right, right, right, left, left, leftcomment from Jane: This is a debut "special event" performance - a bit of an experiment that may become a new SIBERRY performance stream. Several reasons for this idea is: (i) greater connection with an audience and what it brings (ii) performance without 'major tour' aspect; (iii) I gave (or at least presided over) a basic science course at Hollyhock, BC in 1997. It was very special and I realized this format is very important for me to include in what I do; and (iv)it is disconcerting playing one night in Dublin, next night in Belgium, next night in London, etc.=20 I would like to touch down on different parts of the planet longer. =20 Life is flying by. SHEEBA PATRON-OF-THE-ARTS NOW BUYS STUDIO TIME (and gets frameable Handwritten lyrics) right, right, left, left This is a new concept of Madison Avenue (website shopping) that was started in May. It is not meant to be solicitous. It was designed for people wanting to help out. (one of your ideas actually). So I have made an arrangement with a studio and am booking studio time. Patronage funds are sacrosanct and cannot be used for bills. This means I am going into the studio much earlier than I thought possible. This means I am changing and hearing things in my head (other than worries). Thank you, thank you.=20 I mentioned in the earlier pipelines a bit about what had happened to SHEEBA in the last while and that people's incredible care and generosity got SHEEBA over a nearly impossible financial hump. I cut SHEEBA down to a one person operation, streamlined, reduced, worked late, slept with small business manuals, and got to know SHEEBA inside out as I re-laid the foundation. I will never be able to thank you all enough for your generous warmth and want to make sure it comes back to you a thousand fold. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that the idea of buying studio time has been put into action. It is my hope that this is just a passing phase and that, ultimately, SHEEBA can sail under her own steam. And that soon you will all say, 'remember when you could buy studio time for Siberry?' and 'you could actually get her on the phone sometimes' and 'she reduced her operation to such a small scale that once I found toast in my mailer instead of a CD'. http://www.sheeba.ca/loadpage.cgi?id+patron.html =46.
