Here in DC-land, those ectophiles with the inclination and foolishness to see 3-band bills mid-week at notoriously late clubs had the chance to see both of these bands back to back. Tuesday the Loud Family played a pretty thrilling set at the ever annoying Metro Cafe. Alison Faith Levi was an excellent addition to the band (though I can't compare their previous live sounds, as this was my first show), and it was great to see former Game Theory drummer Gil Ray banging away and singing weird rhythms to himself. The Metro Cafe managed to again distinguish itself as an unfriendly environment by immediately putting on music (Sugar's My Favorite Things, to keep with Chelsea's pantheon :) ) within 5 seconds of the Loud Family's set ending. And while Sugar played on and on, the small audience kept up enthusiastic cheers. The band came back, but the sound guy refused to cut the music. Arguments with him and the bartender ensued for a while, and just as Scott brought out an accoustic guitar to play an unplugged encore, he relented and let them continue. I was amazed at how friendly and profesional everyone in the band was about it though. No bad mouthing anyone in the club when they did their encore. Just thanking us for coming and talking about the strange weather of the evening. Even afterwards, off-mic, they said it was just a mix-up and they were glad they got to play some more. (OBecto.... Last year both the DC and Baltimore shows for the Interbabe Concern tour fell through. But the band stayed in Baltimore to visit with Sue, and I put up half of them at my house. When I talked to Kenny at the show, he remembered staying there and being wow'ed by Jane's Maria, which was in my CD player that night. He said as soon as he got home he ran out and bought a copy!) Earlier tonight, Neutral Milk Hotel barely held off disaster at the Black Cat. Arriving at the club at 11:00, they hurriedly took the stage, so the first 4 or 5 tunes were basically sound check. They kept apologizing for the terrible playing and various problems, but it was still a fascinating show, with moments of real amazement. I'm in awe of the sound you get when you stick a mic all the way into a trombone and play the lowest notes you can on it! And it's not too often you get to see a band play the saw repeatedly. But the best tunes came at the least cacaphonous moments, when it was quiet enough to understand the twisted and amazing lyrics. First impressions of FtCH don't put it up with these three for me yet, but it sometimes takes a year for something to grow on me. I guess that especially UtP and LE speak to me, and BfP is amazingly surreal and shamanic in some way - at least I understand it with a different mode than the logical (not being one who over-analyzes all of her statements by reading all the reviews, etc., I may be missing certain connections, though). But surprisingly, I really like Etienne Trilogy and Floating City off of Y Kant Tori Read. I have the bootleg version, and it has the "Bonus tracks", and I find "Happy Workers" absolutely fabulous. I work at a large computer company, and fantasize about taking over the PA system at around 10:00 am or 3:00 pm and playing this song. It wouldn't exactly be an unknown sentiment -- we had a "Team-Building (tm)" exercise where we all competed in this velcro relay race (you cover your body with velcro, and scale these velcro mountains, as a team, in sequence -- first team through wins -- of course, this is difficult because you stick to the side of the mountains / ridges / etc.). Anyway, there were several other contests, and we had to pick names for our teams. Since we are always trying to fix bugs in the code, and they're always such horrid nasty things, and there's never enough time to do it, we named our team "The Moritified Drones" -- I'm sure that got ALL of us written down in some personnel file somewhere! The kids (Brian, 9, and Kevin, 5) LOVE the Happy Workers song, and bounce on in whenever they hear it playing, and want to hear it over and over. Uh, it's not. In fact, Tori didn't even write it. It's one of the "Bonus tracks" mentioned as being on a bootleg of YKTR. Far more interesting to me is Jane's version of the song, about a minute of which appears at the *very* end of the soundtrack. jeff ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jul 1998 14:20:32 -0400 (EDT) From: cos@wbrs.org (Ofer Inbar) Subject: The Loneliest Monk (was Re: If you like Happy.....) kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white) wrote: > Hi, "Who's 'the lonliest monk'?" attributed to Tabitha Soren by "Well I > think >he< said she said it." Both Matt and Ry appear on the record (still due in stores August 18). And my recent partner in duo touring world, Paul Bryan, will be playing the pink, electric bass and singing. This weekend there are three dates in Maine - it will undoubtably be cooler there: 7/24 Johnathan's in Ogunquit 7/25 Left Bank Cafe in Blue Hill 7/26 Raoul's in Portland These are solo dates at three places with tremendous food. Well, not Raoul's but they make up for it with their beer selection. Other big news is that Jenn just appeared on etown, that environmentally conscious, music radio show, with Marc Cohn. We each played some of our own songs - you've heard "Walking in Memphis??" - and then a rousing version of Mr. Fogerty's "Who'll Stop the Rain" together as a grand finale. From Thursday, July 16th, through Wednesday, July 22nd, I've been to five concerts......so here's the beginning of my musical adventures...... On Thursday, I flew to Philadelphia to see Jennifer Kimball and Deanna Kirk (a personal friend of mine -- dontcha love that name-dropping?) at the Tin Angel. My date was Denise Thomas (accompanied by her friend James). We met at Serrano's (the restaurant downstairs from the Tin Angel) and had dinner with Jennifer Prybutok. Dana Wagner joined us right after dinner and came upstairs with us for the show. As I walked into the club, I was welcomed by Deanna's trumpet player, Todd, who remembered me from their Cincinnati performance this past December. I talked with him for awhile as the rest of my group found seats near the front of the venue (a very small, intimate setting). Then Deanna came up and we sat down together and talked for awhile. I gave her a CD by Canadian artist Andrea Florian and a tape of one of Sara Craig's (whose voice reminds me of Deanna's) albums. I also gave her a tape of Lynne Saner's CD and one of my mix tapes which includes Deanna's own song "If Not For Love." Jennifer Kimball was walking around the club and soon took the stage. She has a cute sense of humor and kept saying, "this next song is *** from my new CD 'Veering From the Wave', which you can't have tonight." Such a tease! She performed (not in order) "Kissing In the Car," "An Ordinary Soldier," "Veering From the Wave," and one or two others, all the while kidding around with the audience in her quiet way. I had requested "It's A Long Way Home," which she saved to perform as her encore. When Jennifer was finished, there was a short break before Deanna came onstage. Deanna's performance inlcuded "No Ghosts Allowed," "Where Are You Now," "I Want It Now," "Carousel," "When Love Comes Around," "If Not For Love," "Ballad Of the Small Cafe" (which she said was written after her restaurant, *Deanna's*, was destroyed by fire), and "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." She also sang a couple of jazz standards, the names of which I can't recall. Between sets, Joel Colburn had joined our table......and I also met Henry from the Jonatha Brooke list . After Deanna's set, most people left, but our little group hung around to schmooze with Jennifer and Deanna. As I was talking with Deanna, I was overcome my a rush of generosity and gave her the Lilith Fair pendant I had bought last year (yeah, I was wearing it at the time). She is sooooo gracious and friendly and appreciative of support. And for those of you in the NYC area, she mentioned that she's signing the lease on her new restaurant (also to be called *Deanna's*), and that it should be open by the early fall of this year. I got Todd and Patrick to sign my CD liners....and we joked around with them for a good long while. Todd is a riot! Patrick drew a picture with crayons on a placemat and gave it to Denise and there were plenty of hugs and photos taken all around. At one point, Jennifer and Deanna were back by the bar checking out each other's cds (they'd never heard each other before), and they exchanged an album with each other. Jennifer had given Deanna a copy of "Veering From the Wave," so in a bold move (which is just my way -- some people actually find it endearing), I asked Jennifer if I could have a copy, too. She said, "sure, i'll go out to my car and get you one!" So she brought it back to me and signed it with "For Jill -- thanks for the chitchat!" After 30 - 40 minutes of chatting with everyone, the group broke up and we went our separate ways. Then to make a long scary story short, Denise and James and I drove down to South Street (I think), and went to Fat Tuesday's and a very short visit to Tower Records -- my very first visit to Tower in real life! It was nearly midnight and they were just about to lock the door to the store, but we pleaded and I said that I'd come all the way from Ohio just to shop at Tower and that I would probably spend $200 if they let us in. So they took pity on usand said we could come in for two minutes; I ran around trying to find treasures and shouting out artist names for one of the guys to look up on the computer. We ended up being able to stay for about 15 minutes.....but I could only buy about $90 worth of CDs.....realizing that I had several duplicates of albums I had already ordered over the internet. (*sigh* I do that *far* too much lately!) After checking out and thanking the Tower guys (I don't really mean *checking out the Tower guys*), we departed and drove back to Denise's house to spend the night. One very long ride home for an old woman who really doesn't care for rap music! And so to sleep until tomorrow's Lilith Fair in Camden, New Jersey......
