A jazz revolutionary; turned jazz on its head with his unconventional approach to harmony and discord, melody and rhythm. One of the most influential composers of this century. American. Blossom Dearie was (is; she performed here last year; missed it) an American jazz singer whose heyday was the fifties and sixties. She has a very distinctive voice. Part Marilyn Monroe childlike flutishness, part Astrud Gilberto breathy undertones. She brings a great sense of humor to her interpretations of the standards. She's the voice of "Number 8" on Schoolhouse Rock. Her French pronunciation is abominable. - --charley n.p. Astrud! _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Ditto, except I'd skip his brother Tim's solo work. Besides _From the Choirgirl Hotel_, I have played Neil Finn's album more than any other CD this year. He is quite simply a genius. And, having just seen him in concert on Sunday, I will second whoever a couple of weeks back recommended seeing him live. I sadly always missed seeing Crowded House when they swung through Atlanta, but this (sorta) made up for it. Neil performed the entire new album (minus "Astro" :-() and tons of classic Crowded House songs. He even did Split Enz's "I Got You" and an unplanned acoustic version of "One Step Ahead." He is not to be missed and the solo album and Crowded House back catalog, especially _Together Alone_, are IMNSHO essential for any collection. An A-R note for those of you who might like to do a Web search for him: it's spelled "Thelonious". He's most significant for his piano playing and his choice of ensembles. Well, I finally got around to downloading the plug-in to view the Samson page. So I install it and then go back to the Samson page, right? After the Samson page trickles into my browser a few bytes at a time for a minute and a half or so, the download stops, and I see--nothing. Blank white page. Reload: nothing. So I view the source to see where whatever it is I can't see is linked to, figuring to copy/paste the URL and just go directly, but there are no URLs in the source code; nothing seems to be linked from the index page. Now, I know this can't be right, and it's probably got something to do with the fact that I stopped keeping up on HTML advances about a year ago when I got a job, so I don't even know what NOEMBED means, but I know a URL when I see one, and there is none in the source code. So not only do you need the plugin to access the site, but apparently you need also a sophisticated knowledge of web design. I hope somebody there figures out that their homepage has been designed more as a barrier than an open door. I picked up their latest, _Big Calm_, and I love it. I would also characterize it as trip-hop, I guess. But it incorporates elements of pop, jazz, reggae, classical, and even country to create a nice eclectic, but very accessible, sound. Last week, I found a used copy of the import version of their first album, _Who Can You Trust?_, which also includes an extra b-sides disc. It's not bad, but I don't instantly love it like I did with their latest.
