I had to sound in on a number of things. First, HR mouse pads for the suits. Good internal promo but I agree that there is many an Ecto that wouldn't mind one. The holographic sticker from Samson does sound like a small start. I doubt the Many Worlds tour will have a lack of merchandizing. Next, Imogen Heap. I picked up a used copy of I Megaphone on Monday and was blown away. I felt like some of the songs reminded me of Tori Amos' "Leather" taken to the next level. Truly dark and twisted. I liked her considerably. Last, came across a used copy of a KBCO Music Sampler from 1994. It had "Collective Heart" on it. I considered it a good sign, but then reminded myself that KBCO sold out to the corporate giants a couple years after that. Well, back into the shadows for me. Electronica? Maybe. Ambient with lyrics? Definitely. New Age? > > Not in the least little bit.) Well, then, you'll be glad to know that our "New Age" section includes "electronica", "ambient", and bits of jazz. The Orb, Tangerine Dream, Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, and Shadowfax, are all in there. There are even a number of albums with lyrics (including one by Tangerine Dream, incidentally :-). It's an eclectic bunch, and Happy's album definitely fits in. We don't put things in separate sections in order to pigeonhole them. We put them there because of our format & philosophy. We're an all genre radio station, and we want to play every kind of music we can. We also don't want to overplay those things that people have heard of, at the expense of those things people haven't heard of. We have block programming where a show may be defined as "jazz" or "childrens" or "african, caribbean, and reggae", and then we thrust new DJs into the shows even though they know nothing about the music. They need to be able to pick music that fits the format of the show they're doing, without only finding the few names they already know. Hence, sections arranged by genre. For our all-genre overnight, too, we want a good mix of genres. If everything were piled together in one big section, the fact that 2/3 of our music is rock would show. A DJ not familiar with most of the non-rock artists wouldn't know where to find them. And even DJs familiar with other genres would be hard pressed to discover new styles of music, or new artists in the genres they know. Furthermore, like a record store with separate rooms for folk, jazz, and classical, we have separate "coordinators" for different genres or groups of genres. These coordinators handle contacts with the labels, receiving and processing music, filing it, deciding what's new and old in their respective sections (new music is filed separately), and so on. Each "genre" thus needs to have its own section. The genre should be a *musical* category, not a market category, though we may borrow the name of a market category. But, we don't have things like "AAA" or "alternative" because they have no musical meaning. For lack of a better name, the section I put MWABT in is "NewAge/Ambient", and like the rest of our sections, music ends up there based on what it sounds like, not who it's from (except in cases where we try to keep multiple releases from the same artist in the same place), who listens to it, or what genre the artist or record company think it should be. The two criteria are: 1) We have a show whose format says it plays "new age" - will this CD fit the format of that show? 2) Would a genre coordinator interested in handling "new age", here, be interested in this CD? Of course, many albums can fall in more than one category. Partly we handle that by making them broad, for example, not splitting new age, ambient, and electronica into separate sections. Partly we handle that by filing duplicates in other sections when appropriate. But mainly, it doesn't really matter. As long as the album gets played, on shows where it makes sense, is available for discovery by people who haven't heard it yet, and findable by those who have (and who know they may sometimes have to look in more than one section), we're fine. If we had a second copy of this album, I might put it in folk. I know I'll be playing from it on folk shows, even though it's in new age. :) Incidentally, putting something in a smaller section generally leads to it getting more airplay. np: Ruben Blades y Seis del Solar, "Greatest Hits" Great salsa / latino. As I recall, go to where Wisconsin ends at the river, hang a left, and it's a block or so over. It's a fairly small club, a stage with a dance floor in front of it, and then tables around that. I saw Aimee Mann there, oh 4-ish years ago, and it was pretty groovy. I think we actually ended up sitting on the dance floor a few feet from the stage. Last time I saw Heather Nova (only time, in fact, and her first US appearance when she toured for _Oyster_...a show attended by numerous ectophiles) was at the old 9:30 Club, which was even smaller. Seems to me, though, like the Bayou would be a good venue for her. jeff ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Jul 1998 20:47:20 +0100 From: Geoff Subject: Whoa!! Hmm...i remember Ger Perez mentioning that Frente! had broken up and that Angie Hart was fronting a new band out there in LA...i can't remember the name of the band, though...mebbe they managed to get a guest shot on the show... Subject: Shelf Life I noticed looking at people's NR that y'all don't seem to keep very many unread books around. Personally, I always have at least 10 or so books in the "to read" pile. And that doesn't even count my almost weekly trips to the library. And with music as well. I think Jill can probably understand this, I always have a few CD's that I haven't heard stacked up for future listening. Well...at least one or so. If I don't have new music coming in, I stagnate. I think the same thing holds true for books too. Of course, I am a compulsive book shopper. Fortunately, I have SOME self control and only buy a few Hardbacks, mostly paperbacks, and lots of Used Books. It's almost like good wine...I need my books and music to age to perfection before I savor them. Just something I saw and thought. Back to ignoring me, ;-) Tom np: Third Eye Blind: good pop with nice hooks. Any song about crystal meth that goes doodoodoo is good. (see Rugburn's Tommy and Marla) nr: Don Delillo-Underworld: Shelf life of 6 months or so. Prefectly aged. (If you go back and check you will see I tried to start this one before. I guess I couldnt dive in because it hadn't aged enough yet :-) ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #230 **************************
