The female singer-songwriter field has become very crowded over the last couple of years, but Susan's CD manages to sound like no-one else. I plan to arrive early on Friday to stake out a spot on the first ridge of the hill, overlooking main stage. Hopefully this year I'll get to see most of the New Artist Showcase - I missed almost all of it last year :( None of the other people in my group are on ecto, but they're cool :) A bunch of fru-heads, and some of my other friends, etc. (no, moxy fruvous won't be at Falcon Ridge this year, but a lot of fru-heads have gotten to really like the festival because of the last two years). Now, is anyone else going to Solarfest? (http://www.solarfest.com/) I've never been, but Eddie From Ohio recommended it as one of their favorites. It *really* made me wish for winter (and I've been whining for the last couple of weeks that I wish it were at the very least fall again, if not heading right on into winter! It has nothing to do with the heat; I just really like winter...) b) I've been listening to _The Divine Comedy_ as well (well, not today; I loaned the disc to my sister-in-law, who was curious after seeing _The Fifth Element_...) and after dubbing a concert tape for a friend (a tape which, coincidentally, I got from woj after being randomly assigned to him in a r.m.g tape tree many years ago!) there was some blank space, so I dubbed from videotape Milla's performance of "Gentleman Who Fell" from Conan O'Brien way back when (june '94, maybe?). I've have to dig out the tape an check to be sure, but to the best of my recollection Milla appeared on Conan with two members of the band she toured with... As I think I've already mentioned here before, I joined this list based on seeing the page about "ectophilic artists" on the web, most of whom I'm familiar with and like a lot. But I'd never even heard of Happy Rhodes, and WBRS didn't have any of her material. Well, "Many Worlds Are Born Tonight" was in my mailbox this evening. Along with a new live album from Erin Corday, and a new album by Boukman Eksperyans! I haven't been this happy with my mail bin since the day I got both The Portable efo Show and moxy fruvous' Live Noise. What a strange feeling it was to finally actually see a Happy Rhodes CD, and the anticipation of hearing what she sounds like. I put her on the air. I like it! No surprise there, I expected to. In fact, I'm gonna let it play through several tracks, and type up my impressions as I listen. Lots of associations here. The Orb meets Dar Williams meets Laurie Anderson meets Tangerine Dream... But strangely enough, the very first thing I thought of was Christine Baczewska. I hadn't though about her much recently, and I'd *never* thought of her in conjunction with ecto, but there it is. I just pulled out the Christine Baczewska album "Tribe of One", and put it on immediately after playing four tracks of Happy (with a mic set in between, of course, to let people know what they'd just heard :) - and yup, I think my reaction was on target. Christine Baczewska is filed in our 20th Century section, whereas Happy is very definitely going to land in New Age. So they are somewhat different styles, and both unique. But there's a kinship between the two sounds that was instantly clear to me. So perhaps other people here will like her. Worth a try. Just played a 5th Happy Rhodes track, and now Susan McKeown and time to hand off to the talk show. Thanks, y'all, for introducing me to this artist!
