Hell, half my CD/LP collection came from used record stores. >> This is actually a subject I've been meaning to post for a while. I do shop used quite often, but I try very hard to keep in mind whose discs I'm buying. My general rule of thumb (and moral justification) is that I don't mind buying big-name artists at used stores. If they're well established, I figure they can do without the few dollars they actually get from the sale of each CD from me. If it's a lesser-known or indie artist I'll probably still buy it; however, if I like it, I'll buy my own copy and pass it along to a friend. Perhaps this comes from the 10 years I spent as a recording engineer/producer watching the financial struggles of countless bands who had more talent in their earlobes than most of the bands that major labels churn out via the airwaves. Have I mention that I loathe the music *business*? Anyway...that's my two cents, which will be reserved for a real storebought copy of MWABT. Speaking of it...I got a slight cringe-y sort of twinge when Jeff mention that it's more electronic. Not that I particularly dislike electronic music, but as far as I have been able to pinpoint it, that is the thing that has kept me from really being able to connect with BtC. Not that BtC was actually that electronic--it just sort of has that feel for me, I guess. Just rambling. npimh--"Spark" from Choirgirl Hotel...Tori "she's addicted to this CD..." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Jul 1998 07:42:56 -0400 (EDT) From: "Donald G. The venue for the Victoria Williams/Emm Gryner show is the Bowery Ballroom, a new venue on Delancy near Bowery; it's somewhere between the Knitting Factory and Irving Plaza in size (and similar in design); I've been there once and found it to be a good midsize place to see music. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Jul 1998 06:31:51 -0700 (PDT) From: charley darbo Subject: Re: Rounder/Mercury deal - ---Bob Kollmeyer wrote: >. . . Please let me know how you feel be it > yea or nay. Let me say that I think a Happy Tour fund is a great idea. The fact that I live in Melbourne, Australia, and am only 16 years old makes the prospect of myself being involved in such an operation neither possible or necessary. However, I have a suggestion: The Marillion mailing-list, Freaks, performed a similar operation to allow Marillion, an English band, tour North America on the back of their This Strange Engine album in '97. This not only allowed the fans to see their favourite band (and if you think we're a bit crazy around here, the Freaks are *amazingly* obsessed), but it also helped provide the band with some badly needed exposure which otherwise would have been impossible due to financial considerations. Now, Marillion are in a large amount of contact with their fans, and organised the following deal to be made: Every person who donated money to the tour fund (with a lower limit I'm assuming), received a free, limited edition double-live cd of a Marillion concert. Not having been there at the time, I'm not sure whether this was organised before the fund, or as a spontaneous thankyou afterwards, but it sounds like a good way to get people to help. Maybe Happy would be interested in a similar kind of deal? Woohoo! Wow...the production is awesome...sounded like typical happy, yet better...now i can't wait for the album. other WXPN related notes: sometime this week on the World Cafe, they're gonna have Holly Cole and Maia Sharp as part of their "A Week at the Warhol" which showcases performances recorded at the Andy Warhol museum also, don't forget about the WXPN singer-songwriter weekend this friday- sunday...I'll be looking for some faces on Sunday when Mary Arden Collins (tom, you gonna be there for that), Patty Griffin, Moxy Fruvous, and Francis Dunnery play. Jeff Hanson, on the other hand, does. :P I'm going to have to scour the used bins ... it may just be worth a trip down to St. Mark's Place this weekend. That's where our copy of _BtC_ came from way back when. At the time I felt kind of bad about it, but I was just so glad to have a copy of it prior to its release I got over it. When it officially came out I bought a copy, and since then I don't know how many copies woj and I have bought for various people. If I do find the new album in the bins prior to August 11 you can bet I'll be snatching it up, but you can also bet I'll be buying more official copies once it's out for real. Not to mention buying tickets to every show I can possibly get to, grabbing all the merchandise I can, etc. etc. etc. Happy has most definitely not lost any money on me! Speaking of which, count me in as an interested party on the tour fund idea. I have no clue how or whether something like that can work, but I'm willing to help in any way I can. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY: the Veda Hille mailing list *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Jul 1998 19:30:45 -0400 From: meredith Subject: (FW): The Nields Signed a deal with.... Here's hoping this deal works a bit better for them than the EMI/Guardian debacle. The Nields have the right attitude this time (i.e. they don't want to be megasuperstars any more, they just want to get their music out there and have fun doing it), and Rounder is (we hope) too respectable to screw them over the way Guardian did. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY: the Veda Hille mailing list *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Jul 1998 20:02:15 EDT From: JavaHo@aol.com Subject: Little treasure chest I stumbled upon an online CD store that most of you probably know about, but I'm posting anyway. I ordered on Wednesday and received the CDs today. And the best part is that at the time I ordered (although I think this is temporary) there was no shipping and handling!! Sadly, they appear to be out of Rhodes I, the last of Happy's CD's to make it into my collection. Their service was great, and I received online confirmation of my order and (later that same day) the shipment of my order. Hey Jeff, I hope you know that I'm not livid at *you* or other Ectophiles who have bought it in cutout bins. As I said, I really do want them to be "rescued" as long as the buyer makes up for it when the album is released. I wouldn't be mad at all if this were months after the album's release. There's a big difference between someone buying the album, deciding they're not into it and then selling it to a used record store (better that than the landfill, and it can brighten someone's day and that someone, that buyer, might go on to purchase the entire back catalog), and people who are getting promo copies for airplay or review and selling them over a month before the album's release. Geez, you'd think they could wait a while at least. I only had to make two calls and found a store that had three copies. I had them hold all three for me. I noticed that they were new, not marked as being promo copies. I bought all three--one for myself and the others for friends. I will certainly buy at least three when it is officially released. I am sure none of the money for these copies will get to Happy. I am amazed so many copies of the CD seem to be appearing in used record stores. I will reserve my comments about the CD itself until after Aug 11.
