Hi all, Just wondering if any of you have any pointers to where (in the San Jose, CA / south bay / peninsula area) stores are that have the cheapo cd bins. I'm tired of paying $12+ for most of the cds I get, usually sound unheard. Pointers to newsgroups / websites with pointers to stores would be good as well. It seems that a lot of people here have good stores to pick up these bargains at, and the bargains also happen to be those obscure / hard to find titles not available in the on-line cd stores... I'm sure Steve already answered this, though. I'm not sure of the whole story behind the one post I read, as I'm in Vancouver right now working on my own CD, and I've had to delete a few digests (sorry!! :), but I just wanted to comment... I should probably note that I'm *so* biased about Emm right now. I think she has a talent that 80% of the people on the radio couldn't touch, her writing style is *hers* (some of her songs are sarcastic, healing, funny, moving, and deep), and she's got a great melodic sense. I've had "The Original leap year" and a live tape for almost a year and listened to the CD *really* everyday for the last 3-4 months (that's not all I listen to :). I've heard a few songs off the new album and I have a copy of the 45 which has 2 different versions of 2 songs on the album. I also have a promo copy of "Summerlong" which has spent ample time rotating in my boyfriend's CD player while I've been here... I do see that this album is a little more produced (She had *way* more resources to do this now than she did when she was indie, I think) and will have a richer, fuller sound from te production and instruments... I also think that Emm is a great hook writer.. I can pick out hooks in each song that will stick in my head all day... That being said, I don't think that from just hearing "Summerlong" a listener of the radio (not saying anyone here, tihs is just an example), should automatcially classify her music as "pop". Sure there's definitely a pop feel to "Summerlong" and a few other songs--but beyond that, without labeling her music, I think she's just a *great* musician. I do understand what Steve said about it being a little much for some people here, and given some of your tastes (that's a good thing! :) maybe it is--*but*--I hope that people would buy this album *for* the album, not because of all the hype it's gonna get, or that people have mentioned her name and she's female. It took "The Original Leap Year" awhile to grow on me.. awhile as in, I couldn't *stand* it at first... Her voice was flat in a couple of places, and I just flat out didn't like anything but one song...I started listening to it more and it grew on me (And grew and grew :). Anyway...um...I had a point when I began and now I can't remember it.. and I just woke up, thus the rambling of this :) Maybe the album would grow on people like it did for me, or maybe it will end up not being the kind of music that you like, but... I hope that people will give her a chance... :) If you check out the Polygram site (www.polygram.com/Polygram) there's a section for her in the new releases, and it sounds *soo* evil- corporate-music-money kinda thing...yuck.. just about their "plan" to take Emm to all sorts of dif't popular radio formats, etc... I have a feeling she's going to be pretty big, which is a catch-22, and she definitely deserves it, I think... anyway... sorry for rambling! :) mm..breakfast.. :) jessica ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Jul 1998 15:17:34 -0400 (EDT) From: "Donald G. (They consisted of four brass players and a bass drummer, by the way.) They were also known to their cult for doing the complete songs from =The Wizard of Oz=, but I only ever heard part of a live tape of it. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 04 Jul 1998 15:46:04 -0400 From: Michael Matthews Subject: New CD purchases?! Y'know, I figured that buying a new car with a CD player was a good reason to end my six month drought of buying a CD. I mean, I had to get a CD case suitable for holding many CDs that would fit under the seat, so while I was there .... ("there" being the Tyson's Corner, VA Tower) I picked up Rant and Rave by "Great Big Sea," the group that opened for the Sinead O'Conner/Chieftans concert at Wolftrap last month. Definitely great driving music. They had it for $14 too, in the World Music section. Not sure which subcategory it was under; the Muze listing said Celtic, but there was no Celtic. I didn't notice which section it was in because I was too happy to find it. I also picked up a jazz CD (I'm trying to build up my jazz collection; any recommendatins?) - From Manhatten to Staten by Down to the Bone. A song on this CD has been getting lots of airplay; I had thought the group was "Bad to the Bone," which I thought sufficiently odd for a jazz group that it was worth checking out (I also really like the song, Brooklyn Heights). [for that matter, I'm not sure if it's a group or a talented individual] Maybe now that I won't be spending $400 a month average on car repairs, I can start buying CDs again. Next one's due on or around August 11, I think. For all you Hildegard von Bingen fans out there, (and also for those who may not know about her music yet): I wanted to let you know about a very cool event that will be closing out Lincoln Center Festival '98. Three performances of "The Electronic Ordo Virtutum," by a group called HILDEGURLS. The HILDEGURLS are: Eve Beglarian, Lisa Bielawa, Kitty Brazelton and Elaine Kaplinsky, 4 downtown composer/singers working together to bring 21st-century perspectives to bear on the music of one of the first documented woman composers, 12th-century visionary and abbess, Hildegard von Bingen. Each composer has set one of the four acts of the morality play, resulting in four distinctly styled, high-tech sound tracks that support their live voices. The result is a really intense music and theater experience. The ensemble that is best known for performing 'Ordo Virtutum' in the traditional sense, a group called Sequentia, will be opening the festival with 3 performances of their version, and the HILDEGURLS will close the festival with their "downtown," electronic version, with performances on July 22, 24 and 25 at the Clarke Studio Theater in Lincoln Center's Rose Building. I've been told that the 22nd is already sold out, so if you're interested you should probably get tickets now. The Festival Box Office and information line is 212.875.5030.
