I haven't heard _Public_ yet, but all the extra > production on this album can only contribute to that feeling. Frame of reference: - - witnessed two 15-20 minute sets at Lilith in Toronto 10 months ago - - have given _Public_ about 4-5 spins now. _Public_ definately has a fuller sound than what I witnessed live, and I dare say is a tad overproduced at points (not to fear, it's nowhere near the monstrosity that Tara MacLean's _Silence_ is - not even the same ballpark). I could see "Summerlong" being picked up by AAA radio. Judgement is tough as my point of reference for nearly a year was the stripped down live versions of what I still find to be her strongest material (not surprising given the short set lengths and the "familiarity factor" that almost always, for me anyway, taints the first few listens). Take a listen to "Acid" for what was most representative of my memories of the live experience. "Your Sort of Human Being" and "This Mad" are also close but with violins added at times to good effect, though occassionally overbearing. If nothing else, her distinctive voice will certainly guarantee it a few more plays and I don't regret in the least picking it up even if it was my most expensive aquisition of that weekend (well, naturally, next to _'Mousse_) > The only other thing I can offer is that by far the vast majority of the > shows I've seen her do are stripped-down, solo acoustic performances. Another show in a couple weeks. :-) I believe the only other thing I've seen, aside from the 4 track preview prior to the release of "Tiny Warnings", was a disc with a couple of remixes. Not being into remixes, I didn't look too hard before putting it back. If you're feeling truly inspired, I can't remember if it was the 4 track EP or the remix single that was sitting in the $1 bin at Loony Tunes near Harvard Square as of a few weeks ago. ;) Funny you should mention Garbage since it wasn't long after 9 Day's Wonder had to change it's name (and changed their sound in the process, eventually leading to the guitar/mandolin player and drummer leaving if I recall correctly) since something like half a dozen other bands were using the same name (similar to what Little Sister/Sister 7 had to deal with) that Radio Iodine was signed by Shirley Manson's former label, Radioactive Records. Ellen Bledsoe/Persyn/Bledsoe/Persyn (I *think* she's back to using Persyn again) and hubby Tony Persyn are all that remain from the 9 Days Wonder days. 9 Days Wonder only put out one album, "Garden of Black Roses" and as you may have gathered, is considerably less Garbage-like. It was a local release on the "House of Hope" label, so odds of finding it at a record show near you would probably be pretty slim. I do see it on rare occassion around here (though I've vowed not to go into another record store until I get through my "to listen to" stack... ;) ). bob np. I haven't been there so I can't offer any testimony. The phone number is 358-7503. I never liked the Kronos Quartet's version of "Purple Haze" all that much; it rather turned it into a jazz tune. It works, but it's not the way I prefer it. (Though I have to say that I heard a very odd group called the Roto Rooter Goodtime Christmas Band do "Purple Haze" and "Strawberry Fields" as 40s swing tunes, which was a stitch.) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Jul 1998 11:53:06 -0500 (CDT) From: kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white) Subject: Re: Roto Rooter / Purple Hi, Have you heard their version of Rites of Spring, ala a german beer garden band? Hi! Well, the new and improved (okay, that might be stretching it) Ecto Home Pages are up. Please take a look and let me know what y'all think: . New features: - -- a news page, containing the Reader's Digest version of the album news from Terra Incognita (with a link to the real deal, of course); a space to announce upcoming ectogathers; a space for miscellaneous list-related news; and a link to sign up for NetMind's URL-minder so you can be automatically notified via mail whenever the page is updated. - -- a "stories from the road" page, which is a remake and extension of the "philly show" page from the old site. This is where stories, photos, and other info about ectophiles' experiences at Happy's future live shows will go, and any other stories of ectogathers or experiences by listmembers that are of particular ecto interest. For now I've got the old Middle East show stuff (including the two IRC chat logs, which I found endlessly amusing to read 3 1/2 years later :). I threw this one together at something like 1 am, so be kind ... - -- a page with a brief history and explanation of the list and how to subscribe (this is, after all, the list's home page) Old features you may have forgotten about: - -- The Ecto Family Album: I think this can still be of interest today. I didn't even try to update the links to the home pages (which I know are sadly out of date), and I think some of the people listed on the page aren't even on the list any more, but it's up there for a start. The template is still usable, I think, so it's ready for new additions! - -- The list of links to other ectophilic pages and resources on the Web. Again, I haven't tried to update these links yet, but at least I posted a warning to surf at your own risk. :) - -- Happy's Albums and Lyrics pages: I've gone through and fixed the HTML and added some navigation buttons for everything through _Ecto_. I'm working on _Warpaint_ now. For the time being, the albums from _Warpaint_ forward are in their original state, but they're still viewable. So now comes the plea for help. I'm going to need assistance with the following: - -- Making the "stories from the road page" look better: I am *not* a graphic artist, and while I really don't like graphics-intensive pages, a nice logo at the top of a page is always nice, and I know the layout could be much improved. - -- Updating the links on the Family Album page - -- Updating the Ectophilic Pages links - -- Finishing the lyric cleanup I've already received a few offers of help, and trust me, I will take you all up on it. :) If anyone else wants to volunteer for something specific, please feel free. And if anyone thinks of something new that should be a part of the site, please let me know! This is not meant to be a static thing.
