For me the list is... Babylon 5 -- An absolutely brilliant space opera which has improved every season, now on TNT. Millenium -- Chris "X-Files" Carter's other creation, which after this past seaon I've come to love even more than the X-Files. Dark, complex and well-written, it's sort of the mystical counterpart of the X-Files. The X-Files -- I think that overall the series was not as good this past season as it had been previous seasons (some of the extreme shifts in Mulder's belief system were poorly justified, to say the least), but still a great show. Homicide: Life on the Streets -- The most overlooked cop drama on televison, with brilliant acting and great writing. Half of the actors on the show have deserved the best actor Emmy more than Dennis Franz (of NYPD Blue) ever will. South Park -- Yeah, it's rude and often crude, but it is also damned funny imo. Xena: Warrior Princess -- If you take it for what it is, simple entertainment, then it's a great show, especially when the episodes focus on the funny side of things (and most especially when Bruce Campbell guest stars as Autolycus, King of Thieves). Far superior to it's brainless twin, Hercules. I won't say much more because I'm not sure if I'm allowed to (no one actually told me "not to say anything", but why take chances) unless you all think I should anyway. :-) For those who haven't seen yet, the CD is titled _Many Worlds Are Born Tonight_. Nope. KIWR is a college, public access station. They used to play jazz only, but switched back in 1996, so they have been playing their format now for a few years. Now it wouldn't surprise me if Samson was pumping money into the station, but couldn't own it - as far as I know - due to it being the college's station. FWIW, "Cliff" I talked to is also a DJ there. All DJ's there have to teach - at least the one's that are being paid. The others are students learning what it takes to be a DJ. Plus, it appears that the program manager has friends at Samson, so I'm sure KIWR will be one of the firsts with Samson music. Yes, they have been playing McKinley, but I have yet to hear CPR, so KIWR might be sticking with their format regardless. Happy posted: >I'm wondering if I may impose on you all by asking you to reply to ONE >question: "What is the most Ectophilic T.V. show?" > >In other words, what are the top 1 or 2 shows which you never miss? I already replied directly to Happy about this last night, but I was really zonked and completely forgot to mention the show I really meant to tell her about, so I figured I'd just post take two here. :) As for as "what is the most ectophilic tv show" in terms of MUSIC, that would have to be La Femme Nikita. However, I cannot stand the show (yes, I've tried), and thus never watch it. The shows I never miss: 1.) Buffy The Vampire Slayer (this is the one I forgot last night, and I have no clue how). It's the best-written show on the air, and it features a bevy of really good actors, headed up by the always-amazing Sarah Michelle Gellar. The overarching story that's unfolding as the show goes along is beyond fascinating. Of additional interest here is that they feature music in every episode, and usually the bands themselves perform in the show at the club our heroes hang out in, the Bronze. (Anyone else notice Sean Lennon sitting in with Cibo Matto in the 2nd-season premiere?) I really think Happy could get some good exposure on this show. 2.) Xena: Warrior Princess. It's campy, it's dumb, and the words "historical accuracy" have never been uttered by any of its staff members, but dammit, I'm obsessed anyway. Two strong, independent women wandering around a mythic landscape kicking butt on a regular basis - what's not to like? Not to mention it's got one of the most intense love stories going on tv right now. (It amazes me that the staff of the show continue to publicly deny that Xena and Gabrielle have a thing going, while at the same time they're writing plots and dialogue that would positively melt your tv screen if Xena's sidekick were a guy. But anyway.) Unlike Mike I prefer the darker, dramatic episodes to the stupid comedies, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the comedies as well. It's all entertaining. 3.) Babylon 5. Simply one of the most well-done series on television ever. I'm going to go into deep mourning when it's over this fall. Sigh. Fortunately, like any good space opera, it's available to "read" over and over again (thank you, TNT). 4.) X-Files. Gotta love it. And despite what all the critics are whining about, the movie is really, really good too. 5.) South Park. I'm still utterly appalled by how hard I laugh at this show. Gee, I'm already up to 5, and I still haven't gotten to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (the best Trek series yet, and probably ever, seeing as Voyager is too vapid and boring for words), King of the Hill, The Simpsons, and ER. (Me? Watch too much tv? Naaaah. :}) And while I'm here, let me throw in a plug for Invasion America, which is running on the WB network this summer after Buffy on Tuesday nights (in place of Dawson's Creek - speaking of vapid :P). It's surprisingly good. The animation is trying a bit too hard to be anime without really getting there, but the writing is by and large spot on, and I'm amazed by the attention to detail. It's a good old-fashioned space thriller, and I'm enjoying every minute of it. Alas I didn't think to start taping it until it was too late, but I'm hoping it'll be on again sometime. If it comes out on video I'll probably buy it. It'll look nice on the shelf next to my complete set of first-season Xena tapes. ;) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY: the Veda Hille mailing list *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Jun 1998 15:19:05 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: happy's new album? Two strong, independent women wandering welllll... i have to admit that, though i would harldy go so far as "obsessed", on the two or three occasions i have actually been bored enough to just "channel surf" and come across xena and actually watched the whole thing, i have quite enjoyed it. as has been said, it can only be taken on a purely entertainment level, but i must admit it does quite well at that. it's like a bad serial b movie, but engaging. and yes, it's refreshing to have those rare female main characters. >3.) Watch too much tv? Naaaah. :}) i never would have described *myself* that way (i mean really, i've never had cable or the possibility of more traditional reception when i've lived on my own - laur and i are at her parents' house for the summer, but after that we're moving back to vancouver) but it seems when there's a tube available, i slip into bad habits. i think we'd better *not* ever get cable in future... oh yes, and i neglected to mention another new favourite - _earth: final conflict_. seems to be a post-mortem production of another rodenberry creation, and since i've gotten into it, it strikes me as very good. now if only there could be a series with truly *alien* looking aliens... ah well, soon enough technology will make it feasible... - -damon, rambling again. But my votes for best stuff on tv, or at least the stuff I try not to miss each week, would include _The X-Files_, _Millenium_ (which I think I enjoyed more than the x-files this season, though that season finale really threw me for a loop; one of the darkest, nastiest things I think I've ever seen written for tv, and that patti smith "video" in the middle was beyond intense), _The Simpsons_, _South Park_, and _NYPD Blue_. Like John, I don't play nice with the cable people, so I can't speak to shows on networks like USA. I will admit, however, that if DC Cablevision ever got their act together and started carrying comedy central, I'd probably get it hooked up. But my general observation over the years has been that it doesn't matter if you have 7 or 70 channels; when there's nothing worth watching, there's nothing worth watching: cut your losses and do something constructive. jeff ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Jun 1998 00:37:05 -0400 From: "Joanna M.
