Just wanted to say that I got Whore a few weeks ago, after having Whomanfoursays for a while, and was completely blown away. I didn't really warm to Whomanfoursays that much because, despite the strong material, the production was just *so* eighties that I cringed every time I heard it. But Whore is a huge improvement. I find the first two tracks a bit mainstream rock, but it's all uphill from there. The title track is suitably weird and twisted, Falling Down is a fantastic quasi-ballad, Little Boys has this great eastern blend, Deep Dark Hole is suitably ominous and The Revenge Of Sleeping Beauty is a perfect way to end the album. The production is also so brilliant! There just aren't enough female artists using that industrial-style menace, and Dalbello is certainly one of the best examples, only just behind Stina Nordenstam IMHO. It took a while, but I'm now a confirmed Dalbello fan! I'm happy to see Sinead was in good spirits and engaged with her audience. When I saw her she was surly and down right nasty to the audience to the extent that I just wanted to leave (plus the sound was awful....). Now I'm sorry I didn't snatch up that extra ticket you had.... >>> "Jeffrey C. Burka" 06/17/98 01:05am >>> well, I'm just back from seeing Sinead this evening, on her tour with the Chieftains. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect; a friend (and fellow ectophile) once saw Sinead, maybe 5 or 6 years ago, and said it was one of, if not *the*, worse concert experiences of his life. As it turned out, this one was phenomenal. The opening act, Great Big Sea, "from the tropical island of newfoundland" came on right on time, and wowed the crowd with a too-brief four song set. Alas, no rendition of "It's the End of the World As We Know It" as I'd read about here, but still the band was a lot of fun. Four men singing traditional and original tunes with lots of acoustic guitar, fiddle, accordion, and great harmonies. I was too lazy to pick up their album at the show, but plan to do so sometime soon. Sinead was up next, hitting the stage around 8:35 and playing for a bit more than an hour. During the first several tunes, I marveled over and over again at the absolutely incredible recorder (flute? don't think so, but I was awfully far from the stage, out on the lawn!) player, who was adding such a wonderful touch to the songs. I suppose I shouldn't, then, have been surprised when Sinead later introduced him as Davey Spilane, known to many ectophiles due to his work with Kate Bush. He was truly amazing, and added a unique touch to the songs on which he played. For once I had the presence of mind to keep track of what songs were played, so: Emperor's New Clothes You Made Me The Thief Of Your Heart I Am Stretched On Your Grave (dedicated to MLK Jr) Jackie Dreaming of the Bones (from Davey Spilane's upcoming album) Nothing Compares 2 U Thank You For Hearing Me My Love Fire On Babylon This Is The Last Day of Our Acquaintance - ----encore She Moved Through the Fair Sinead was backed by a 6 piece band, including two keyboardists, drums, bass, guitar, cello, and of course the winds from Davey. The sound was about as perfect as I'd hope for at such an auditorium -- all of the instruments were audible, well mixed, and neither too loud nor soft. Sinead's voice was in great form, and she sang songs that allowed her to use much of her intensity. She was also seemingly in very high spirits, giggling and giddy as she spoke to the audience and shrieked "thankYOU!" after nearly every song (realizing two thirds of the way through the set that this was probably very annoying and/or painful, but noting that she couldn't seem to stop saying it. ;-) Happily, she also came back out to perform "The Foggy Dew" with the Chieftains (who were wonderful, as usual, though I had to leave partway into their set so that dc's public transportation could get me home. ) If this tour's hitting your area, I'd highly recommend it. jeff ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jun 1998 06:30:21 -0700 (PDT) From: charley darbo Subject: Need emergency copy of _Anima_Mundi_ Mayday! But it sounded like a flute, not a tin whistle (for lack of a better way of putting it, it sounded like a wooden instrument, more like Matt Malloy's wood flute than, say, the more common metallic flutes one usually hears). It's a "low whistle" - not sure if that's synonymous with "D Whistle" - a wider diameter and longer length than the "typical Irish tin whistle". The voice of a tin whistle can vary quite a bit actually, depending on brand and material, but if was large and he was playing it from the top it was probably a low D whistle (so called because it plays an octave lower than the standard D whistle). They do sound quite different from "normal" whistles and I guess one way of describing that difference would be that it sounded more like a flute. John Whelan played one as part of Riverpran... err... Riverdance I believe and the last time I saw Solas Seamus Egan played one on quite a few of the tunes. There's a growing movement on the Internet to bring artists to people's homes. The idea can be traced to a group of 2,500 rabid Jewel fans known as Everyday Angels (EDAs), who maintain a mailing list on the Net. In April, 1997, the singer Cindy Lee Berryhill--a San Diego contemporary of Jewel's--was stuck in Boston with a yearning to perform. Aware of EDA's legions, she contacted a friend, who got word out that Berryhill was looking for a gig. The next day, the singer was performing in a fan's living room for thirty people. Since then, she has played in about sixteen homes, sometimes drawing more than 100 fans, each of whom donates ten dollars. "I won't ever give up clubs," she says, "but it's a great way to connect with people." The "Living Room Tour" trend has spread, and subsequent shows have been held in cities across the country. While many of these artists are local folk singers, higher-profile acts such as Freedy Johnston, Patty Griffin and Steve Poltz have expressed interest. "We're looking at it as a supplement to regular touring," says Michael Pontecorvo, director of artistic development for Poltz's label, Mercury Records. "It's increasingly difficult to get exposure for new artists, but this is a proven method." Poltz, who played one living room with his former band the Rugburns, hopes to do at least six more when his tour begins in July. "I like playing small venues, anyway," he says. "This is about as intimate as it gets..."
