Jill :D buys: << TREANA - Naked >> I just bought this, too. What do you think, Jill? There are a couple of cuts that almost make me think "country rock", but only for lack of a better term. There are other cuts, though, that apeal to me quite a bit. I love the "Pretty 1 & 2" interludes. A little Jonatha sounding, maybe? To me, this disc (although I haven't really had time to get to know it) has two distinct personalities. The songs that have that underlying nagging country feel I don't care for, but I like the others *very* much. I suspect this CD will end up on a car tape--minus a couple of cuts. Maybe I'm being too harsh, though. Curious to hear your reaction or the reaction of others who have this disc. Must dash off --- Java n.p. The way I remember it (and it's been something like 5 or 6 years, so forgive me if I get something wrong), Happy had never read Anne Rice's vampire chronicles before she wrote the diptych on _Equipoise_, so it was all hers, "a story unto itself." That said, "Gabrielle" is a character is Rice's books, the mother of the vampire Lestat, and a vampire herself (and definitely not anyone's redemption) It *is* a great piece, isn't it? I remember hearing it for the first time, live in Philly (3/92) and having to wait seemingly forever for the studio versions to be released. jeff ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Jun 1998 08:05:56 EDT From: Riphug@aol.com Subject: New Releases for June 16th *Rock and Pop new releases* - -------------------------- - - DAVE ALVIN - Blackjack David (HighTone/Rhino) - - BLACK TAPE FOR A BLUE GIRL - Black Tape For a Blue Girl EP (Projekt) - - BOOM SHAKA - Rebel-lion (West Coast roots reggae) (Shanachie) - - RONNIE BOWMAN - The Man I'm Tryin' to Be (Sugar Hill) - - DEVIN - The Dude (Noo Trybe/Virgin) - - DRAIN S.T.H. - Horror Wrestling (Enclave/Mercury) - - EMMET SWIMMING - Big Night Without You (Epic) - - NEIL FINN - Try Whistling This (ICE #134) (WORK Group) - - FIVE EASY PIECES - Five Easy Pieces (MCA) - - FRONT 242 - Live Code (Play It Again Sam) - - CHRIS HILLMAN - Like a Hurricane (ICE #135) (Sugar Hill) - - IMOGEN HEAP - I Megaphone (Almo Sounds/Interscope) - - WAYLON JENNINGS - Closing in on the Fire (ICE #135) (Ark 21) - - MISS JONES - The Other Woman (w/Mobb Deep, Craig Mack, Doug E. Most of the seating will be on the floor. It's a small, quiet house, one-third of whose population is eighteen months old. Please keep this in mind when arriving, attending, and leaving. These people are very, very special friends of mine; I know that Ectophiles will give them no reason to regret that. Excuse the pedantry of tone. I'm just a little nervous that I won't be there to accept personal responsibility for this little scheme of mine. These are very generous people who are doing this as a favor to me; a week ago they'd never heard of Ingrid, and they still haven't heard any of her music (which will be remedied this weekend--they'll be out here visiting me). So. I wish I could be there. Those of you who can, please enjoy it for me, and give Brian, Jenny, and Alia Rose (your hosts) my love. And throw a couple extra dollars into the hat on my behalf. And-- and and and and and!--enjoy Neile's reading! Buy her book, _Spells_for_Clear_Vision_. I don't know if she'll have copies there for sale, but I got mine at Elliot Bay. I didn't think anyone on ecto would be familiar with them, though I do think a fair number of people here would like them (as well as Christine's other band, Sabot, where she shares lead vocals with her friend Mona). On the other hand, as far as I can remember January only has one CD and I don't think it's called "See Thru". I'm at work and my January CD is at home so I'm not sure. Is this a different January? Along with the review copy of _Spine_ that was sent to me, I received a 7" single by Veda Hille featuring the song "Bellyfish" and the song-zygotes "Strange, Sad Stone", "Sweet (Over The Wire)" and "Six, Shamus, Silence". If I wasn't entirely sold on _Spine_, I find the single annoying, though the annoyance factor won't make me give up on Veda -- that's how these things are, they're usually made for completists. Hmmm. I thought all this was covered in Ecto 101. It's part of the third corollary to the EWS principle - the core of which is a complex equation with lots of variables and imaginary numbers like eleventeen and thirtytwelve... Basically, it's been observed that in a sample where N is sufficiently large (N representing the number of record stores) that as T(spent_in_record_stores) approaches infinity, strange and wonderous things happen. ;) Among these phenomena is believed to be a bending of the space-time continuum as hinted at by the appearance of items before they technically exist in locations one would least expect to find them (witness last month's sighting of "Many Worlds Are Born Tonight" month's before it's scheduled arrival and hundreds of miles from Kansas or NY). Unfortunately, if you aren't careful in balancing the equation, M(wallet) rapidly approaches 0 and CC(max) can aproach it's upper bounds. In other words, blind luck. | (yes, pushed back :~() Well, I doubt it's any consolation, but it would seem the only thing holding it back is probably some attempt to time the market (or set up a support tour with a known act?) such that it will have a better chance of making an impact or some such thing. It is a pressed disc with some cover art, so they're pretty much ready to go, I'd guess. | If you *do* have | a copy--any chance you could find me one? (I'll pay good | money for it) I'll certainly keep my eyes open. and Ofer Inbar enquired: | > January See Thru | | Is this the same January I know and love? It would indeed be the one and the same, though I can't claim to have had any exposure to them prior to finding the disc. The store didn't have a player out for listening, but the lyrics and instrument selection looked good enough to take a risk on (all the more reason to include lyrics/ band line up in the liner...). Admit it, though - how many of you could pass on a band that covers "Oompa-Loompa-Doompadee-Doo"? | On the other | hand, as far as I can remember January only has one CD and I don't | think it's called "See Thru". For those of you who were curious about the Seagrams comment in that Jennifer Kimball forward that was seen around these parts, Seagrams (yes the alcohol guys who own lots of other things including Universal Records...didn't they also have those Bartles and James fellas?) finally bought Polygram Records for a lot of money...this makes them the largest record company/label/distributor/scuzzbucket in the field...the deal includes Mercury Records, Universal Records, and Blue Thumb Records, among others...they're still working out what parts of the labels and what people are gonna be dropped, held, combined, upgraded, downsized, what-have-you; you can bet your sweet bippy that this means consequences for lots of artists on those labels and close to signing with those labels, and i bet that this is the reason why Emm Gryner's album _Public_ has been pushed back to July as reported by Jess W (i want a copy of your EP, dammit....make it already *smile*)... Speaking of Emm, I finally got her album _The Original Leapyear_ last week from A&B Sound...the entire took a long time to get to me because it took a long time for them to get Emm's album from some warehouse far from the Vancouver base of operations...bleh...anyways, this is what i got in my shipment for those interested : Holly McNarland _Mr. 5 Minutes_ single Holly Cole _Christmas Blues_ ep Housemartins _Now That's What I Call Quite Good_ (a steal at $11.50 canadian since it's only available as an import around here for over $20) Beautiful South _Choke_ (same as above) Veda Hille _Path of a Body_ and _Here is a Picture_ Crash Vegas _Aurora_ Lenni Jabour _Lenni Jabour_ Dalbello _Whore_ (can someone explain this to me?...i thought that Dalbello would be ecto-ish....but it's not....are there two Dalbellos?) With shipping and handling, i paid $118.90 canadian, or a little more than $80 US...not bad... I played _Hello Aquarius_ on my radio show today....an hour later, i went into my GM/PD's office and saw the single for "Summerlong"...had to resist the urge to play it :) I believe the single is looking to be added to playlists next week at Modern Rock and AAA radio stations.... you know what really bugs me more than people saying that Delerium's _Karma_ is a hot new album...people saying that Delerium is a new BAND. Period. Barenaked Ladies seem poised for big-time stardom with the imminent release of their album _Stunt_ on July 7th.....*sigh* :) According to the latest issue of Billboard magazine, there will be a limited release of the album that contains two songs unavailable on the normal releases..."She's on Time" and "Long Way Back Home" are gonna be on the first 100,000 copies shipped in the US and the first 35,000 copies shipped in Canada...now, how the cds are gonna be distributed regionally and to what stores, i have no idea... For Holly Cole fans, she appears on an album by Jesse Cooke (a semi jazz guy) called _Vertigo_...she's only on the last track, which is a cover of a Sting song called "Fragile"...this sounds like Holly, but doesn't have her distinctive stylings fully fleshed out... For Susan Werner fans, she plays piano and sings backing vocals on a track from Michael Veitch's album _NY Journal_...the song is "TRU-LUV" and it's nearly impossible to tell that it's Susan singing in the background...Shawn Colvin also has a guest stint on the album...happily enough, the liner notes note that Susan appears courtesy of Bottom Line Records....it's nice to see that in print :) Sarah McLachlan's latest single, "Adia" is the first of her singles to break Billboard's top 10 singles. I like K's Choice's new album _Cocoon Crash_...i was severly disappointed by _Paradise in Me_ since it was a departure from _The Great Subconscious Club_ a great album, IMHO...but this latest effort returns slightly to the beautiful, fun perfect pop melodies of the first album with some of the grittiness and live energy of their second effort... If there are fans of Chris Isaak around here and 60's era rockabilly, maybe you should try out the Maverick's latest album _Trampoline_...it's a hell of a lot of fun, not country at all...there are some weak moments where they delve too much into the sugar-sweet 60's pop sound, but otherwise it's solid. that's all for now. go have some fun. get struck by lightning. it's good for you.
