It will take place at a friend of CLB's house on Venice Beach at 8PM. This should be an amazing gig & I can't encourage "L.A. area folks" enough to attend this!! For those already familiar with the various Garage Orchestra personel, youre in for a special treat at this gig. CLB's extraordinary cellist Renatta Bratt will be rejoining the G.O. (for the first time since 1995) at this one off gig! As with many LRT gigs, attendance is limited, so you must contact paul@cdaddy.com for RSVPs & directions. CLB has told me she's really enjoyed hangin with the Ecto people who've turned out over the past year & hopes to meet more of you at this intimate private gig. Wish I could join you! I hope I don't blow it by posting this info here, but hey, we can all keep a secret, right? I found out that Jill Sobule is going to be playing an unannounced, unadvertised gig at The Living Room in NYC on Saturday, June 27th at 8:30 pm. Be there or be at the Mila Drumke gig around the corner at Arlene Grocery (or at Jennifer Kimball's gig at Fez). Don't know how Ectophilic either artist is, but once again, I feel the need to evangelicise about artists that may or may not be of interest to you-all. * ALISON FAITH LEVY -- interesting singer/songwriter from the Bay Area. Given her background working with avant-garde musicians (she was in a band called It in the mid-80s in NYC with some Shimmy Disc regulars, I think) and her present gig as keyboardist for the Loud Family (the most recent band by Scott Miller, lead singer/guitarist/songwriter of Game Theory), I'd expected her music to be much more obscure. Surprisingly, her most recent release, _The Fog Show_, is in a pretty straightforward singer/songwriter vein, with songs centering around her supple piano-playing ability, strong voice (kind of like Veda's, were she influenced by Dusty Springfield), and insightful lyrics. I like her approach, that she's not afraid to be vulnerable, but is nobody's doormat, resting her musical persona nicely between Chrissie Hynde and Tori Amos. However, her previous 7" resonated with me a lot more -- she performed it with a full band and it came closer to her vision of "rock piano", and had a neat song called "Execution Day" that could be a three-minute rock opera version of _Welcome To The Dollhouse_. Discography: _Grumbelina_, 5-song CDEP from 1994 on Piece of Mind records (self-released?) "The Scientist"/"Execution Day" 7" from 1995 on Piece of Mind? _The Fog Show_ 11-song CDLP from 1998 on Magnetic Records _Days for Days_, 11-song CDLP with the Loud Family from 1998 on Alias (I know she's guested with some other artists, but I don't have the full discography from her website in front of me.) * DAMON & NAOMI -- These guys are my artistic heroes. You may know them from such bands as Galaxie 500, in which they were the rhythm section. Now Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang have formed a folk duo called Damon & Naomi (well, duh), which plays some amazingly gorgeous music. The gauzy dream-core approach of G5 is supplemented with a more traditional song structure, and their music is so beautiful and heartfelt, the kind of album you'd swear the two coolest camp counselors from campfire singalong would release. Their full discography is too long to list, but here's their solo releases: _Pierre Etoille_ 3-song 7"/CDEP on Rough Trade, reissued in 1997 on Elefant _More Sad Hits_, 12-song CDLP from 1992 on Shimmy-Disc, rereleased in 1997 on Sub Pop _The Wondrous World of Damon & Naomi_, 11-song CDLP from 1995 on Sub Pop "The Navigator"/"Awake In A Muddle" 7" on Earworm "Awake In A Muddle" included on Tom Rapp tribute _For The Dead In Space_ _Playback Singers_, 9-song CDLP on Sub Pop Plus: work with Galaxie 500, Magic Hour, and Kramer Has anyone on the list heard of Jane Brody? There was an intriguing review of her set opening for Mike Scott a few years ago, but I've not been able to find anything on her since. And, finally...could someone who organized the EDA get togethers please get in touch with me and give me some pointers as to how I could set up one of those? I'm thinking of having a band play in my backyard and just need some suggestions as to how to go about it. Thanks, guys! I'm going to be up in Boston for work from Monday, July 13 to Thursday, July 16. So naturally I'm interested in spending the preceeding weekend up there as well. Jeff W, are you around a free? Anyone else in the Boston area want to get together (and optionally offer me a place to crash Friday and Saturday night, before work starts picking up the tab.) Then I'm going to be in Albuquerque for a week, either the last full month of July, or the one that runs into August. Don't know just yet. Is there anyone in Albuquerque at all? I'll even settle for some mail from people who know Alb fairly well. (Valerie, didn't you live there for a while?) See, I'm going to be working out there for about 9 months, and this trip is to get an apartment set up. So I'll be looking for some hot tips on where I might like to live. I'll be moving out there in the late August/early September time frame. And given that, I'm feeling that it's pretty unlikely I'll make it to the Falcon Ridge Folkk Fest after all. I'd still love to go, but July is looking way too full already.
