He he, I find it quite ironic that of all possible artists it was the Corrs who caused such controversy among us, because if I had to describe them in one word, I'd chose the word "inoffensive". I don't think they are as bad as some posts would have it; they are just very commercial, easy and bland. For some this is indeed offensive, but remember I'm one of those people who think Frente are one of the greatest things in music :) My tolerance to sugar coating can be quite high... - ------------------------------------------------------------------ ..Who alive can say, "Thou art no Poet; mayst not tell thy dreams?" Cheers! And it seems most appropriate that this milestone should be an entry for one of these new, largely unknown yet exciting acts. That to me is what Ecto is largely about. While I haven't got my copy yet, I know the previous tape-only release, and my recommendation is Buy, Buy, Buy! Sarah Slean is wonderful, of all the new artists I heard last year she was my favourite, and turned out to be the one with most staying power. And BTW Steve I remember I still owe you for that tape and Emm Gryner and it makes me feel uneasy. As I accessed this post The Corrs happened to come on the idiot box for a one song performance on Today in New York. A promo for their Fleadh performance. Unless someone really good is on another stage while they're performing I might gravitate in their direction. ********************************************************************************************** Paradise Sound The Sound Choice For Choice Sound ParadiseSound@juno.com ----- 718-850-2300 http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/triadmedia/sound.htm On Thu, 11 Jun 1998 18:01:57 +1000 Andrew Fries writes: >In a message "RE: Corrs Light" on 10/Jun/1998 16:41:32 Tim Cook says: >> I'm really curious to hear the Corrs now I've heard so much about >them!! > >He he, I find it quite ironic that of all possible artists it was the >Corrs who >caused such controversy among us, because if I had to describe them in >one >word, I'd chose the word "inoffensive". I remember seeing her with Neal at the Birchmere in Feb/March 1995. But I have this nagging feeling that I've seen Kirsty a second time, probably in Chicago. My reactions were based on this mix of concerts. So can anyone help me recall when I saw Kirsty the second time??? It had to have been with an ectophile, since I rarely see concerts otherwise. As to Kirsty's early stuff, I have "The Essential Collection" containing a sampling of her early songs, including "There's a Guy Works Down the Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis", "A New England", "Terry" and "80-Year-Old Millionaire". It's a UK collection on Stiff Records, and I found it at the Grand Opening of the HMV shop in Washington DC on Wisconsin Ave. in Georgetown. The complete track listing is: -- There's a Guy Works Down the Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis -- A New England -- Patrick -- Eight year old Millionaire -- See That Girl -- Until the Night -- Just One Look -- He Thinks I Still Care -- They Don't Know -- Turn My Motor On -- Please, Go to Sleep -- Terry -- Quietly Alone -- Teenager in Love -- A New England (12" version) -- Terry (12" version) -- There's a Guy... (country version) A fantastic compilation, but I've never seen it since. ==> Valerie Neal Copperman wrote: > On Wed, 10 Jun 1998, Valerie Nozick wrote: > > > I've seen her live, and wasn't that impressed. Hmm.....where to start....ah, yes.....the beginning. I picked up Andrea Rotter (from ITW and my *adopted daughter*) at about 11:45 am......the weather was great for driving -- cool yet sunny. We made good time driving and didn't have much trouble at all finding Jessica's parents' church, where the Strawberry Festival and Jess's performance were to take place. As we drove up to the church, there was a little girl -- about 6 or 7 years old -- dressed in a big red strawberry costume, complete with a green *leafy* collar -- waving at people as they drove by. All we could see from the road was the church and a medium-sized tent......"hmmmmm....this is a little bit smaller than I had expected, " we thought to ourselves. So we drove into the parking lot, parked and then went up to see what was going on. Definitely not much! The gathering was more like a church social than a full-fledged *festival* -- the only strawberries being sold were in a yummy strawberry shortcake; and the other edible items available were nachos, soft drinks and coffee. Tickets were being sold for kiddie games (a duck pond and a couple of others) and a *moon walk* thingie. Andrea and I found Jessica's mother by the ticket stand, and she led us into the church, back to the room where Jessica was warming up. Jess came out and met Andrea for the first time and then led us out to the tent, where we took seats right up front so that I could get photos of the performance. Just before the musical program was supposed to start, Jenni Hawkins and John Shepard (commonly known as *JenniandSquid*) arrived and joined us, with appropriate introductions being made. Before Jess's set, a guy who had performed at the Indy Borders the same night that Jess had performed there did a *very* abbreviated set. He did one song about breaking up with a girlfriend, with a rather interesting leg-jiggling thing going on as he sang. But about two or three lines into his second song, a string broke on his guitar and he was unable to finish , so Jessica took over. She appeared slightly nervous as she began talking to the audience, but her voice was strong as she started off with Emm Gryner's "Your Sort of Human Being." She then performed a number of Tara MacLean songs, including "That's Me," "Let Her Feel the Rain," and maybe "For You" and/or "If You Could." (Sorry, I can't remember the exact set list......Jenni took a signed copy of it home, but I got Jessica's broken green guitar pick!) The last song that Jess intended to sing was another Emm Gryner song, called "Hook Machine." Of all the songs Jessica sang that day, this was my favorite!!! She hasn't practiced it a whole lot, but she did a wonderful job on it......it seemed to be really in her range........ Then she was going to end the show, but I asked her to perform her a cappella version of "Amazing Grace" (since it *was* a church function!), which she graciously agreed to do. Unfortunately, even though it was a church crowd, the majority of people were not listening as intently as Jess's *fans* were. At one point in the concert, Jessica followed in the footsteps of Tara MacLean and asked the crowd to *please listen* to her singing......but to no avail.......their loss....*sigh* After Jessica's first set was over, we all piled into my *soon-to-be-sold* Suburban and went over to Ruby Tuesday's for a brief refreshment time. (Yes, I had one of their famous big blue margaritas with the gummy fish in it!) We couldn't stay too long, because Jessica had another set to do...... When we got back to the church, an all-male barbershop-type singing group was performing. All the little old ladies were enjoying flirting with the men and singing along.......and then it was Jess's turn again...... We had talked about how "Hook Machine" had been the strongest part of her first set, so she opened the second set with that number. She didn't even do the other Emm Gryner song this time......but sang a slightly shorter group of Tara songs, closing again with "Amazing Grace." Jessica has become much better with her guitar playing since she performed for us at her Living Room Concert in early spring. Her voice and her confidence are both stronger, and now it's just a matter of Jess's adding her own songs to her repertoire. She'll also be working to focus on her music and the people in the crowd who *are* really listening......learning to overcome the distractions of playing in front of a live audience (as opposed to a *dead* one?). I've been fortunate enough to see the lyrics to some of the songs Jessica has been working on, and have been very impressed. I'm really looking forward to hearing her demo cd -- what she'll sound like in a studio-recorded version. Most of all I'm tremendously proud of Jessica's determination in becoming a professional singer/songwriter. I wish that *I* had had as much strength and fortitude when I was her age.......*sigh* Jessica knows what she wants and she's making great efforts to go after it. And not only is she pursuing a singing career, but she is also becoming quite an accomplished photojournalist. If you have the chance to see/hear Jessica perform, by all means do it!
