I'd insisted that Ectophiles would understand that I was only expressing my opinion and would never take a disgreement of taste personally. The above post proves me wrong. I hereby apologize for the fun I had recently in participating in the Corrs thrashing; dave apparently took it personally and felt he had to--Vicki predicted something like this--take it out on Katell. She told me that I might, by association, hurt the images of the artists I love in the eyes of someone with whom I disagree about the artists _they_ love. I hope, dave, that this is not true: I hope you gave Katell an honest appraisal and are not dismissing her to spite those of us who are cool toward the Corrs. Because that wouldn't, in fact, spite us; not me anyway--I don't take it personally. In my opinion, disparaging Katell to spite me would be a very clearcut case of cutting off the baby's bathwater to spite your face. Or shooting your nose in the foot. Or something. - --charley (drive-by critic) n.p. Rufus Wainright: _Rufus_Wainright_. !G!O!!!B!U!Y!!!T!H!I!S!!!A!L!B!U!M!!! n.r. I've bought a couple of discs that I found appallingly bad (which of course only equals not to my tastes) from the list, but mostly I've discovered wonders through people's comments here. For what it's worth, I don't like too many soft pop things which for me is the umbrella The Corrs come under, so matter how good an example of that kind of music The Corrs are, I'm simply not going to like them--a fact that can help you interpret my comments about them. And that's another reason why the Ectophiles' Guide is so valuable--we try to include everyone's comments, positive and negative, so that you can figure out what it is about a group that draws some people and turns others off in order to judge if you yourself will like them. So, Dave, just what is it you like about The Corrs? And what didn't you like about Katell Keinig? It's interesting because they both have Celtic flavors in their music, but The Corrs take it in the mainstream pop directon and Katell takes it toward rough rock/alternative pop. Some of the same influences but a very different overall sound. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Jun 1998 12:33:23 -0400 (EDT) From: Ofer Inbar Subject: [some more artists] Carol Noonan Carol Noonan The first time I ever saw Jennifer & Jonatha (aka the Story) play as a band, I remember hearing about Ben Wittman and Duke Levine that "they have played with many other bands in the region, including ... ... and Knots & Crosses". I thought they were both excellent musicians, and I wanted to hear some more of their material. I vaguely remembered having listened to or played Knots & Crosses and liked it sometime in the past, so the next time I was at WBRS I looked in the folk section, and there was a CD by them. I played it, listened fully this time, and loved it, especially with the ethereal vocal grooves. I tried to make it to every Knots & Crosses show I knew about for the next few years. Although they had Duke & Ben for a rhythm section on their albums, they mostly gigged as an acoustic trio. Carol Noonan, Rick Harris, and Allan Williams. They all wrote songs, sometimes together, and Carol and Rick traded off being lead vocalists. During the early 90s, they were doing pretty well here in the northeast. They got commercial radio play, reviews in the papers, and lots of prominent shows. I finally got them for a show at WBRS in early 1994. Later that year, I heard they had broken up. Partly I was relieved that I managed to get them on our live music series just in time, and get a really nice tape out of it too, but I also mourned. There goes one of my favorite bands, I thought. They said all three of them were planning to continue in music separately, but that's not the same... ... or is it. Carol Noonan's first "solo" album (more personnel on it than either Knots & Crosses album, but it's under her name :), Absolution, was everything I liked about Knots & Crosses, but better! And it even had some of my old favorites from Knots & Crosses, songs which Carol had written for the band. Carol Noonan now has three albums under her name, all on Rounder: Absolution, Noonan Building & Wrecking, and The Only Witness. Around the time of Noonan Building & Wrecking, the name changed to "Carol Noonan Band", but she doesn't really have a band exactly, more like a rotating cast of highly skilled musicians who are all playing with other artists. Recently she's been touring with her core two band members as the "Carol Noonan Trio". These two are Paul Bryan and Kevin Barry. The rotating cast includes Tom West, Duke Levine, Ben Wittman, and sometimes a backup singer Carol knows from the restaurant they both work at in Maine, whose name I forget. I'd have to call the music "folk-rock", but when I try to describe it by analogy I can never think of other folk-rock acts to compare to. What comes to mind most often is Groovasaurus, a Boston based 6 person rock band. It's not that Carol sounds like Anita Suhanin, although both of them have distinctive and powerful voices. It's more that Carol's vocals sound like the guitar & bass grooves of Groovasaurus. Even with just the trio, she fills the venue with her voice and it's another world. The instruments blend in and reinforce the effect, but the voice is what dominates, and the voice is "on" for almost the entire song sometimes. The overall effect is somewhat eery and ethereal, I think, and quite absorbing. One of the other reasons that Carol Noonan reminds me of Groovasaurus is her sense of timing. Her "Train Song" and Groovasaurus' "Accident" are two of my favorite songs ever, largely for this reason. They build up slowly and steadily, up a little, down a little, faster, repeat the pattern... It's like classical music. The timing is just right, and very satisfying. Afterwards, just about any other band I listen to sounds impatient & hurried. (Even Groovasaurus' latest album, actually :) Carol Noonan's songwriting is mostly on dark & depressing themes. Lots of breakup songs, but none of them cliche. She's Irish Catholic, from a family of Irish Catholics in Maine, and that shows in the religious overtones of a few songs (none preachy, though), and the celtic traditionals she sometimes covers - usually the more haunting ones, and sometimes done a capella. Of the three Carol Noonan albums, my favorite is still Absolution. However, it's not the one I'd recommend as a starter. It's the least varied of her albums, most of the songs sound very similar - they just happen to be my favorite of her styles :) To start with, I'd recommend her second album, Noonan Building & Wrecking. It's got what I think is her best song yet, The Ballad of Brownfield (it's based on an actual triple-murder which happened in her hometown). If you like Ballad of Brownfield, Come Up For Air, and Creatures of Habit (the latter two are Knots & Crosses songs) then proceed backwards: get Absolution, and get "Creatures of Habit" by Knots & Crosses. If you like Getty, Comes in Waves, and Leaving on Your Mind, proceed forward and get The Only Witness next. np: Boukman Eksperyans, "Vodou Adjae" (Island / Mango, 1991) The album that started a musical revolution in Haiti, replacing the previously dominant form of music, Compas, with Rara/Vodou. -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@leftbank.com cos@cs.brandeis.edu -- WBRS (100.1 FM) -- WBRS@brandeis.edu http://www.wbrs.org/ "There's a time when you know that your love is all right, and a time when you know that it's wrong; and I might get my heart broke tonight, but I won't come undone." -- Carol Noonan, "Come Undone" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Jun 1998 12:16:43 -0700 From: "Bill" Subject: The ecto CD trading post. For starters, I am using a lot of the "default" (read minimalist) features; as time goes on I'll add more bells and whistles. Also, should you encounter any technical difficulties, please make sure to let me know (webmaster@wagill.com). 2. I intend for this service to be for the use of members of the ecto mailing list. Ranch Romance I first discovered Ranch Romance in the country section at WBRS. It was 1992, and I'd just created a new program of bluegrass and country. Bluegrass because I love it, country because of a sense of duty - Boston's only country station at the time had just died and there wasn't any country on the airwaves here. They told me I was silly to create a twice-a-week show with country, nobody would want to DJ it, so I DJ'ed it myself. I think I played Ranch Romance the first time I did the show, and that's when I realized I'd misjudged the whole genre by just listening to what the pop country stations played. They were a 4-woman 1-man band doing a country/western swing blend. Jo Miller, the lead singer, is an adept yodeler, and many of the songs feature her yodeling. Other personnel were Nova Devonie on accordion (and colorful dykey dresses and colorful stockings :), Nancy Katz on bass, David Keenan on guitar, mandolin, banjo, and Barbara Lamb on fiddle. Barbara Lamb left to start a solo career before Ranch Romance broke up, so she's only on their first two(?) albums. They never really made inroads in the country market because their sound was kinda weird, but they got a nice boost when kd lang had them open for her on an entire tour. They used to come up here to Boston and play at Johhny D's, and also an annual "Lizards, Lights, and Romance" concert put on by Songstreet, along with Northern Lights and and the Austin Lounge Lizards. I'm not sure quite how "broken up" they are. Not long after the breakup, Jo Miller and Laura Love recorded an album of oldtime music, and when I read the liner notes I was pleased to see all of the ex Ranch Romancers were on that album. I think it's on Octoroon, but I can't remember the title right now. As far as I know Jo and the rest of them are still in Seattle, but I have no idea if they've recorded anything together recently. And yeah, I got them on WBRS before they broke up, too :-) np: Tony Trischka, "A Robot Plane Flies Over Arkansas" (Rounder CD 0171) the master of the banjo -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@leftbank.com cos@polyamory.org -- The Left Bank Operation -- lbo@leftbank.com http://www.leftbank.com/ -- WBRS (100.1 FM) -- info@wbrs.org http://www.wbrs.org/ "my official author-type name is Jessica Perry Hekman, and if that pushes your sig to 5 lines, so be it." -- Jessica Perry Hekman ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Jun 1998 14:16:47 -0700 From: "Anthony Kosky" Subject: Real Audio samples on Ashley Maher web page The Ashley Maher web page now has Real Audio samples of two tracks from Ashley's new album "The Blessed Rain".
