MAIDEN VOYAGE / Nneena Freelon (CJ4794 $16.98 CD only)--This amazing jazz artist (who happens to be a Ladyslipper neighbor) has been hailed internationally as " the greatest female vocalist to come along in 3 decades." She describes this 1998 release as "a joyous celebration of feminine spirit and passion...stories both new and familiar." DO A TWO SABLE / Danielle Howle and The Tantrums (DAE19016 $16.98 CD only)--Welcome to another one of the many faces that is Danielle Howle. On this 1998 release Danielle is backed (for the second time) by what could be called her electric project, The Tantrums, taking her sound to a whole new level. And she is from South Carolina. NEW BLOOD / Beth Wood (ARR5689 $15.98 CD only)--Our interest was sparked because this singer-songwriter currently resides just up the road from us in Asheville NC. For this 1998 debut she combines elements of bluesy rock, jazz and soul with her folkier singer-songwriter style. DEAR ENEMY / Dana & Karen Kletter (HAN1420 $15.98 CD only)--This unusual 1998 release is a suite of songs relating the extraordinarily strange family life of these Raleigh NC-based twin sisters. Their debut, 8 years in the making (so long because, as they suggest, "time sure flies when you hate your sister"), features their haunting harmonies and darkly evocative lyrics. DASHBOARD BUDDHA / Kid Sister (KS3 $14.98 CD only)--This 1998 release fulfills all of our cravings for girls and their guitars. The Durham NC-based duo holds onto its folk roots while branching out into spoken word and rock. BASTARD OUT OF CAROLINA (BMV2VC $19.98)--This video is based on the best-selling novel by Dorothy Allison, directed by Angelica Huston, narrated by Laura Dern, screenplay by Anne Meredith. If you loved the book you won't be disappointed by the movie. LEAVIN' THIS TOWN / Terri Binion (DAE19015 $15.98)--Originally issued on Terri's own indie label Shinola Records, this 1997 release quickly became a favorite at Amy Ray's Daemon Records (who chose to release it to give it the distribution it deserved). She presents unassuming melodies, remarkable guitar lines and insightful lyrics, all wrapped up in an alternative/country/folk package. You can order these and all of our other releases by calling 1-800-634-6044, fax us your order at 1-800-577-7892, by e-mail (don't forget to give us your name, shipping address and credit card info.), and from our web site at http://www.ladyslipper.org (Please remember that the web site does not support the 10% e-mail broadcast option.) Jill :D ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jun 1998 16:19:47 -0400 From: jjh969@juno.com Subject: Syd / Yves /St Ann's dining guide &. (too long) Chelsea mentioned Syd Straw. I like "War & Peace" alot but some of my favorite Syd stuff was her work with the Golden Palominos. But then a band who's alumni include Jack Bruce, Bill Laswell, John Zorn, Arto Lindsay Fred Frith, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Peter Blegvad, Bernie Worell Carla Bley, Richard Thompson, Amanda Kramer, Michael Stipe, Henry Kaiser, Bootsy Collins and Lori Carson can't help but be one of my all time favorites. Before she took to warbling for dollars Syd waited tables at Exterminator Chili downtown, and on more than one occasion steaming bowls of their "Industrial Strength" chili served up by Syd brought tears to my eyes. At a Pete Seeger concert at Lincoln Center that Syd and I attended she was kind enough to pose for me for a picture. If Chelsea, or anyone else would like I'd be glad to send a small scan of it out. Your choice of format. (.bmp .tif .jpg .gif) E-Mail me off list if interested. At a later Knitting Factory appearance Syd graciously signed it for me. Many thanks to Yves, who's kind offer to dine with him and to attend a performance by Autour de Lucie I was forced to decline. As much as I would have loved to have done so, jet lag and an extraordinarily frantic schedule made doing so impossible. Four days in Paris is like a sip of champagne. Were I ever forced to leave New York, Paris is one of the few other places on this planet I could enjoy calling home. Hopefully the next time I get a chance to cross the pond, time will not be such an issue and I'll be able to indulge myself by enjoying the Ecto-hospitality that seems to span the globe. In the meantime I'll try to console myself by making a point of catching at least one of Autour de Lucie local shows at the Knitting Factory on June 17 & 18 or @ Fez on the 20th of June. Paul asked about St Ann's location. St Ann's is in Brooklyn Heights on Montague St. A most excellent venue if you've got the right seats, some have restricted sight lines. >From the north (Manhattan, Ct. Mass. etc.) you can get there from the Cadman Plaza West exit off the Brooklyn Queens Expressway (rte. 278) . Make a right turn off the Cadman Plaza West service road on to Montague Street. St. Ann's is one block up at the corner of Clinton St. (The Brooklyn Bridge dumps you right onto Cadman Plaza West.) From points south, the Atlantic Ave exit off the BQE might be better. Take Atlantic Ave three blocks to Clinton, make a left and go 6 blocks to Montague. Parking is tough and traffic can be as well, allow time. Lots of good (and bad) restaurants. Acadia Parish Cajun Restaurant on Atlantic, lots of good Lebanese and other Middle Eastern food on Atlantic too. Circles cafe is also on Atlantic. There's a decent sushi joint just across the street from St Ann's on Montague. There's also a good Italian rest on Montague but it's name escapes me, not the one on the same side of Montague as St Ann's, (that one you should avoid) the good one is upstairs across the street, a bit more towards the harbor. Thresa's of Alphabet City has a branch on Montague near Hicks St. Good pirogue, blintzes, bigos and kielbasa. Their tripe soup is peppery and most excellent if the ingestion of entrails suits you. St Ann's is one of my favorite venues and boast's some of this countries oldest stained glass windows. I've seen Robin Holcomb, Robert Fripp and the League of Crafty Guitarists, Dr. John and Marianne Faithfull there among others, and have never not enjoyed myself thoroughly. Maranne Fathfull's "Blazing Away" video was shot during her performance there if you'd like to get an idea of what the place is like. Read something strange in the TV section of the Daily News the other day. Details are sketchy but it sounded like something worth looking into. At 8:30 PM on June 15 in the New York area, and perhaps in your's as well, cable's Independent Film Channel (?????) will air "Fishing with John", a series where various people go fishing with John Lurie (of the Lounge Lizards/Stranger than Paradise fame) The premier episode puts John with filmaker Jim Jarmusch shark fishing out off Montauk. A subsequent installment pairs John up for a fishing trip with Dennis Hopper. Sounds like "Fear and Loathing with the American Sportsman." Great Big Sea is a Celtic band out of Newfoundland. They have 3 CDs released in Canada, and a US release slated for July methinks. The first US single is a cover of REM's "End of the World". They do I nice cover of the song. The are very harmonized... sometimes they get to almost acapella in their songs... other times, it's jammin on the fiddle. :) I highly recommend them to anyone who like Celtic music. And, I may as well make a plug for the mailing list I run for them. ;) If you'd like on it, send a subs request to gbs-request@tardis.roc.servtech.com. And did someone say Squeeze???
