My friend Chris went with me to both >Bruford/Levin and P2, and he said that if he could have only picked one >show in advance, it would have been P2, but after the fact, it would have >been B/L. I wholeheartedly agrred. I also would have chosen P2 ahead of time, that is, until I heard the B.L.U.E. album. I had it for a couple of weeks before the show and I was getting pretty attached to it and so I really looked forward to seeing it live. And after the fact, my preference was still with Bruford/Levin for much the same reasons that you described. >I thought P2 was fun, but they brought in more of the aspects of Crimson >that leave me cold. The songs were much longer than B/L, giving them the >freedom for long drawn-out improvisations that tended to lose me. And while I really enjoy that sort of thing to a point, I'm also left a bit cold by it. However, the thing I thought was interesting was that some parts seemed completely random and improvised, but then I realized that Fripp and Gunn were playing completely in parallel so it really couldn't have been totally improvised and they actually wrote it like that, and I thought "How f***ed up is that?" >I liked >the more concise, lyrical (more songlike) pieces played by the Bruford >group better. I agree. But oddly enough, I had a couple of friends who saw this show in Boston and didn't like it because they claimed that the pieces had no structure and seemed random and noisy. They couldn't have been more wrong, and I was really surprised they said this because these friends of mine are good musicians and big fans of Bruford and Levin. Did they really see the same band we did? >Bruford combo was more fun to watch (plus, the club was much more >comfortable and ticket prices were $15 less). We saw both of these shows at the same club and the cool thing was that they had a deal where they gave a discount if you bought tickets to both shows. So we saw both for just under $30. They had chairs and tables for B.L.U.E. and we wound up standing just behind the last table so we had a full, great view. For P2 there were no chairs, probably because they figured they could sell more tickets for that group and there would be no room. We stood fairly near the front, but when you're 5 feet tall like me, and you're at a show that's 90% men that are at least a head taller than you, it's pretty tough to really see. Perhaps that deterred from my overall enjoyment a bit. >Broken down by player, I much preferred Bruford on drums to Adrian Belew. duh. ;) >Belew was the only member of P2 who seemed to be really having a good time Not so when we saw them. Fripp cracked a smile a couple of times, and kind of laughed once! Gunn definitely appeared to be having a good time and he is just an amazing player, although I kept thinking he was going to electrocute himself with all the sweat dripping off his face ;) >but I had to laugh at how much work he made drumming appear to be. >Drumsticks >floated effortly over Brufords kit while he did miraculous >things, and Adrian >Belew, using an electronic kit, worked so hard! Again, duh. ;) But wouldn't it be interesting to see how Bruford would fare with guitar and vocals?? >Tony Levin was more fun than Trey Gunn >(Stick & Bass vs. touch guitar), and Torn and Fripp were pretty even. And >Chris Botti was better than no one. (Actually, I really liked him.) I prefer Fripp to Torn any day. Torn is too noisy and random for me (at least it seemed that way in the context of B.L.U.E.). And it's not that Chris Botti was better than no one, in some ways he was better than everyone! >I'm not sure what was different between the first and second part of the >P2 show. I don't know if I got used to the sound, the pieces were >different, or I just quit trying to look over all the tall people and just >listened. For whatever reason, I found myself more interested and >involved in the second part of the show. I think I'd be happier with the >whole affair if Belew played guitar and sang though. Ditto. But all in all, I think the thing I like so much about B.L.U.E. is that it sounds really fresh. These guys have never done anything that sounds quite like this, and it was an experiment that was definitely a success. And the thing that really sets it apart and gives it an entirely different feel is the horn. ProjeKct 2 is cool as well, but more of what you would expect from these guys. Okay, I'll shut up now. One more thing: I'm moving to Seattle in August. Is there anyone out that way (Neile) who knows of an apartment becoming available in August? Not having heard B.L.U.E., how does it compare to the Torn/Bruford/Levin/Isham "Cloud About Mercury"? Hmm... something I've been trying to remember: on that tour (which I saw at the Bottom Line), Mick Karn subbed for Levin, and someone else played intead of Isham. Actually, it might be a good idea to fly out for a weekend before the move to apartment hunt. The apartment market is tight because Seattle is booming, and August is a particularly competitive time with all the students coming back (Seattle has 3 universities). Anyway, I'll definitely keep my ears open. Because I work at one of those universities I do hear about these things. ECTO CONTENT: I got Sarah Slean's _Universe_ disc in the mail today. Steve, what was the surprise? I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet though I know the cassette version well. I also used to have a copy of one of Bill Bruford's album (_Feels Good to Me_?) which had a song based on Alice in Wonderland. I used to faint in coils to it. I liked that album but wasn't much taken with other stuff I heard at the time so I haven't sought it out. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 May 1998 13:14:40 -0500 From: kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white) Subject: Re: Crimson Hi, I have a vinyl disc, culled from a college radio slush pile, of "BBC College Concert" series (Licenced to play the week of March 25 1982) of King Crimson live. The e-mail is the virus, not any of its contents. But that's neither here nor there... What *is* here (and/or there) is that "Good Times" is from Edie Brickell's _Picture Perfect Morning_, a wonderful album which, yes, has been mentioned here many times since its release in...er...I think '96, but I'm not positive and way too lazy to go check the CD. Wow, thanks. Maybe I'll be able to remember that. I almost never buy soundtrack albums, primarily because if I didn't see the movie, I can't keep any of them straight.
