I've got to add my 2 cents in about Holly Cole. I got to see her for the 2nd time this year in Boston Friday night and she really is a riveting performer. Like Neal says, the show is pretty much the same, so I know what to expect, but it doesn't take away from the excitement. Her band is phenomenal and I love how she goes on about how cute her drummer is to both men and women! Her stage presence is just amazing. She is sexy, funny, personable and one hell of a singer! I hope Neal posts his comments as well. So, what did you guys think of P2? My friend Chris went with me to both Bruford/Levin and P2, and he said that if he could have only picked one show in advance, it would have been P2, but after the fact, it would have been B/L. I wholeheartedly agrred. I thought P2 was fun, but they brought in more of the aspects of Crimson that leave me cold. The songs were much longer than B/L, giving them the freedom for long drawn-out improvisations that tended to lose me. I liked the more concise, lyrical (more songlike) pieces played by the Bruford group better. And while ultimately it's the music that mattered, the Bruford combo was more fun to watch (plus, the club was much more comfortable and ticket prices were $15 less). Broken down by player, I much preferred Bruford on drums to Adrian Belew. Belew was the only member of P2 who seemed to be really having a good time, but I had to laugh at how much work he made drumming appear to be. Drumsticks floated effortly over Brufords kit while he did miraculous things, and Adrian Belew, using an electronic kit, worked so hard! Tony Levin was more fun than Trey Gunn (Stick & Bass vs. touch guitar), and Torn and Fripp were pretty even. And Chris Botti was better than no one. (Actually, I really liked him.) I'm not sure what was different between the first and second part of the P2 show. I don't know if I got used to the sound, the pieces were different, or I just quit trying to look over all the tall people and just listened. For whatever reason, I found myself more interested and involved in the second part of the show. I think I'd be happier with the whole affair if Belew played guitar and sang though. That's Dave Vergauwen. He is indeed the guitarist on Mercy, and has been in Lisa's band for a few years now. I like him. I think his singing and playing can really compliment Lisa's, though if they aren't quite in synch, it can be jarring. I had a lot of fun at the show, but wasn't as wow'ed as Paul. > She came out and > did two songs solo (Sweet Lorraine to start *sigh* and then Poor Man's > House)... These I loved! But this is the Patty I already new and liked - solo & accoustic, intense & passionate. > My god was the sound loud. It was difficult to make out what Patty was > SINGING, much less saying...but it was still divine... That was something that bothered me. I liked hearing the lyrics on the songs, and I wasn't thrilled to see her voice get absorbed into a rock and roll mix. That aside, she can certainly rock with abandon, and most of the songs were raucous good fun. Some stood out on first impression (particularly the title track of the forthcoming album, Flaming Red). > one song that really stuck out was a song > for her grandmother that was called "Mary"; it was such a beautiful and sweet > song... Yes indeed. That may have been the highpoint of the show for me. A really excellent tune. Last time she was in the area, she opened the show with a song called "Mary Mo" (or that's what she sang a lot), so that's what I was expecting when she inroduced it as being about her grandmother Mary. This "Mary" sounded entirely different, though they were both stnadout tracks. > For her encore, she came out and did "Cain" by herself, then had the > keyboardist and the second guitarist (on the acoustic this time) help her with > "Let Him Fly"... The band did a fine job doing mellow, atmospheric backing, as well as the full throttle rock approach. I prefered the mellower side though, where the intensity came from the singing and guitar playing. Lots of people unplug to get that effect, so it's a little jarring to see her plug in and lose it. All that aside, the show was fun, and I'm looking forward to the new album. Some of those complaints might disappear seeing her after I've had a chance to hear the album.
