The CD features a couple of hidden surprises not on the tape. No, this wasn't a ploy to get people to spend money twice on a single EP... Sarah just couldn't afford to put out the CD until now! :-) A limited-edition UK-single of _Universe_ with several new unreleased B-sides will be available next month... ;-) Seriously though, the CD version of _Universe_ is quite nice and one of the hidden surprises is absolutely gorgeous, IMHO. If you'd like a sneak preview in WAV, RealAudio, or MP3 form (the latter is recommended), go to her website. (you may have to look around a bit - they're hidden - but quite easy to find) http://webhome.idirect.com/~nsounds/sarah/ Anyway as I did before for people here for her EP cassette, I'll be happy to pick up copies for people. I'm guessing with postage, a padded mailer, and everything, it should work out to about $10 US to send out. Steve P.S. there are a couple of people I still owe tapes to: Dave W, yours is coming... Andrea F, I'm not sure if I owe you one or not, email me! If there's anyone else who's still waiting on a tape from me please let me know, and apologies in advance! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 May 1998 12:11:01 EDT From: ABershaw Subject: MrBB-Tracklist & info on Jewel's Poetry CD Good Morning all, I highly suggest anyone who plans on buying the CD version of Jewel's "A Night Without Armour" save or print out this post. It'll help you immensely when you get the CD next week or in the near future. (It will be released along with her book next Tuesday May 19th & should be available from any bookstore selling the book.) In March, Jewel took a a few days off from filming her movie in Kansas City & went into a local studio to record herself reciting all the poetry featured in her upcoming book. Over the course of the next month, these recordings where arranged & edited to fill a CDs worth of time. Because of the "time crunch", Harper-Collins was unable to include this finalized tracklisting on the graphics on this 1st pressing of the" A Night Without Armour" CD. I'm told this will be corrected on future pressings, but for now, you'll have a CD with 87(!) tracks & no way to identify what tracks they are. This could drive you nuts should you enjoy programming or listening to any individual track. Since the tracks are not in the same order as the book & not all of the poems in the book are included, this tracklist may come in very handy to you. OK, here's the official tracklist on Jewel's spoken word CD version of "A Night Without Armour". It's a cut & paste from my database, so I hope it formats readably on your various email systems. I sent this list to Bibi & she may include a permanent link to it on Jewel's website. Perhaps Adam & Mike can also keep a link on the POJ & EDA Websites as well, for helping others in the future. Umm. What Finnish ectophiles? Dunno, but maybe there are a few of you lurking on the list...well, there are two others at the very least, I think... Anyway, I'm just back from a few record stores in central Helsinki, trying to convince them to carry Happy's records. Here's what happened: At Fazer Music (Aleksanterinkatu), after some persuasion and applications of Warpaint, I got a very sympathetic response, and a promise to really consider getting Happy's music if more people expressed an interest in actually buying them. Understandably, they want to be convinced that it's worthwhile commercially (although it was hinted that the same might be accomplished by Happyvangelizing some of the sales clerks), and were rather worried about the fact that neither Aural Gratification nor Samson Music have any kind of presence here. At Fazer Music (Kaivopiha), they didn't seem interested at all, but then someone told me that next week's Monday and Tuesday some guy (Matti Kervinen (sp?)) will be there who might be interested in this kind of music and has the authority to do something about the matter. At least I'm going to go pester him about this... At Tunnelin levy, the guy just said that "Well, we've never been asked about this band ("no, it's not really a band, it's her name") before, but I'll keep it in mind." in a tone of voice that meant "forget it". Maybe it's still worth a try... It might be a lost cause, but it wouldn't hurt if all Finnish ectophiles reading this (or their ectophilic friends not on this list) visited (or phoned) some (or all) of these (or some other) stores and expressed their interest (or something). As was already partially related by Meth here, I had the pleasure to spend a week in the US 15 a month ago. I have been very busy since so it took me a long time to write this. I arrived in NYC on a rainy (of the cats and dogs type) friday morning. After a failed attempt of meeting Paul Blair on the evening (the timelag stroke me hard) I finally met Woj, Meth, Mike Curry and Jeff Wasilko on saturday afternoon for CD shopping. I must admit that this was my idea, Meth reminded me that later when my arms were completly full. :-) We went to two used CD stores, the resulting list is at the end of this message. Remind me what that EWS thing is about? After a nice lunch in an indian restaurant (don't ask me the name of what I ate because I have absolutely no idea but it was good) we went to Milla Drumke's concert where we met Paul Blair for a typical ecto gathering. It was my first exposure to her music and saying I enjoyed it would be an understatement. Live, her voice reminded of Suzanne Vega's but this is not the case on the CDs. Go figure... The nice part was that she sang _Under the ivy_ for "the two peoples who came from Boston and France to see me". It looks like Jeff and I are in the loon category. :-) After the show I ran to buy her two CDs and _Illinois_ has been constantly in my player since I came back. My wallet thanked Jeff for buying the last T-Shirt before I could lay my eyes on it. :-) Then we (I mean Jeff) drove to Meth&Woj's place where we met (the recently older :-) ) Tamar. On this occasion I was introduced to their impressive CD collection. It's even bigger than I imagined, you've got to see it to believe it! Let's fast forward to the following thursday where the "usual suspects" met for the Susan McKeown concert in . After another indian restaurant (I understood the menu this time) we went to a nice theatre where Susan and a part of the chanting house was performing. It was the first time I saw her live and all I have of her was _Bones_ (that I found in a little shop in Paris, the clerk had no idea how it arrived in his shop!). Anyway, the first part was made of new (for me) songs from _Bushes & Briars_ and Susan's music is not the kind that attracts me instantly so I didn't enjoy it as much as I would have if I have known the music already. But the second part was mainly composed of old songs and it sent me flying high. This is when I realised how lucky I was, being in this small intimate venue in the US, enjoying wonderful music with friends I have met IRL for the first time a couple of days earlier but who had already hosted me and drove me from NYC to Boston. This ecto thing is amazing! :-) Highlights of the show for me: Cé leis é? (made me switch back to my old .sig), Jericho, Bones. After the show we talked with Susan who is as nice in person as she is on CD if that makes any sense. . OK, she is *very* nice in person then. In fact she was so nice and talkative that I forgot to ask her to sign my copy of _Bushes & briars_. One more reason to come back soon! This is the list of CDs I came back with. Most of them are Meth, Woj, Jeff or Mike's recommandations. I put a (*) in front of the ones I have listened at least once. (*) Abra Moore, Live from the strangest places (promo item) (*) Abra Moore, Strangest places Deanna Kirk, Where are you now (*) Emma Townshend, Winterland (*) Holly McNarland, Stuff Indigo Girls, Indigo girls Jill Sobule, Jill Sobule (*) Julia Fordham, Porcelain Kim Fox, Moon hut (*) Laura Love, Octoroom Lauren Hoffman, Megiddo (*) Laurie Freelove, Smells like truth Letters to Cleo, Aurora glory Alice Letters to Cleo, Go! (to have the whole LtC disco.) Lili Haydn, Lili Luscious Jackson, Natural ingredients Melissa Ferrick, Willing to wait (*) Milla Drumke, Gathering my name (*) Milla Drumke, Illinois Penelope Houston, Cut you (*) Project Lo, Black canvas Ruby, Salt Peter Sam Phillips, Omnipop Shawn Colvin, Steady on (*) Susan McKeown, Bushes & Briars Syd Straw, Surprise (*) The Nields, Gotta get over Greta Various, Amazing grace Various, Rock she said (*) Wild Strawberries, Heroine (*) Wild Strawberries, Quiver So far, I *love* the Nields (try to work a full day with _Taxi girl_ on loop you this is an enjoyable experience but your coworkers will doubt your sanity), the Wild Strawberries and Holly McNarland. Of course, Susan or Laura are not competing here since I already knew them. I am not that fond of Project Lo but there is Happy and *that* voice. Abra Moore is OK, as well as Laura Love, but I played them only once so won't comment at length. Emma Townshend doesn't work for me at all but I didn't pay much for it so that's all right. I will actually earn money by selling it to a used CD store in Paris this week since it hasn't been released here! To conclude, it was a wonderful week for me in ectoland. Thanks a lot to all the wonderful peoples I have met. I am looking forward to come back, hopefully for a longer period. Cover has the Fig. 53 Pulse sketch. Inside labels have sketches of two men trying to revive a woman. If you don't get enough interest to justify setting up a mailing list or bulletin board, couldn't we just do it here on the list? Would that bother anyone? Hi! After several months of not being able to coordinate schedules, I am now proud to announce that Veda Hille will be chatting online with anyone who wants to stop by on Monday, May 18 at 10:00 pm EST. Since I know not everyone has access to an IRC server, I'll be setting up a room called "trajectory" at Yahoo!, . If you've never chatted at Yahoo before, never fear -- it's free, and it only takes a minute to register. INSTRUCTIONS will follow at the bottom of this note. This chat is something Veda's been wanting to do for a while, and I'm excited to be able to help make it happen. I'm not pretending to be an Internet chat maven, but I think this Yahoo thing should work for everyone. If I can get it working, anyone can. :) Hope to see a bunch of you next Monday night! INSTRUCTIONS: 1.) Once you're in Yahoo and have registered in Chat, click on the "Music" button, select the chat software you want to use, then click on the "start chatting" button. 2.) You'll end up in the "Music" lobby. In the box at the bottom left of your screen you will see a "Change room" option - click that, and then the box at the bottom right will contain a list of rooms under the "Arts and Entertainment" category. Click on the "user rooms" option, then scroll down until you find the link for trajectory. 3.) When you hear a mechanical instrument, think of a child shrieking. 4.) If you have any problems, e-mail me and I'll do what I can to help. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY: the Veda Hille mailing list *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 May 1998 22:08:40 -0500 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: Jewel's Poetry Well, the Seattle poetry contingent comes down unanimously about this. I have heard some of Jewel's slightly later poems that she read aloud at Jewelstock almost two years ago. Unless she's come a huge way since then, well, no, she wouldn't have a book coming out particularly from a mainstream press. But hers is a kind of voice and poetry that has a draw--it's kind of as people/popular/unpretentious feeling as her disc. I think the public will like it and it will probably sell well. But even though she says her poetry is more personal than her lyrics I prefer her lyrics. She has good instincts but her poetry is not particularly mature or her poetic voice particularly individual. It reads like anything a smart American teenager/young 20-something could put together. But that may be part of what's good about it. So buy my book instead, ok? And I don't have a cd, but I do have a tape or two I could copy, and I'm a pretty good reader. JUST KIDDING, but my advance was a Canada Council grant of $3,100 to put the book together and my printing was 500 and my royalties 10% of the print run and my book was on the list of the three best books published in 1994 by a Canadian woman poet and it still hasn't sold out. Sour grapes? Not exactly, but I must say it does make me itchy. Jewel did say publically that she thought I was a great poet. I'm a little sorry not to be able to say the same of her--at least at this point. But maybe folksy is better. I knew when I started that I wasn't writing for a mainstream audience. Jewel's poetry probably is poetry that is palatable to the mainstream. I guess we'll see. I'll be watching. Hey, maybe if I ever see Jewel in person again I can get a blurb for my next book! - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 May 1998 13:21:38 +1000 (EST) From: Sherlyn Koo Subject: Re: Show of hands, was Re: yet another shopping expedition Hey folks, Andrew said: > "Bill" writes (about "an ectoish place out there for > swapping used discs"): > > My hand is up and weaving enthusiastically!
