Despite all kinds of lineup irritations caused by the local radio show, Atlantic, the venue, and according to the venue, Tori's people who arranged the tour, that all wanted to rule the show (myself I think it was actually incompetence all the way around, but whatever), it was a wonderful show. One question, though: Why does Tori pick middling talented male singer-songwriters to open for her? David Poe, though he was trying hard and the crowd was pretty responsive, was not exciting to say the least, and obviously not someone who would appeal to most Tori fans. Does she do this for contrast? Yawn.... Okay, those nitpicks over, Tori with a band is a wonderful experience. She was just getting over something (she said that she'd "just gotten out of hospital yesterday" and John Stewart reported later that it was food poisoning) but it only seemed to affect her speaking voice, which sounded pretty ragged. Her singing voice was right on and powerful--perhaps more powerful than ever before. There were moments that just knocked me out. But that might be that it's been two years since I've seen her live and I'd forgotten just how strong her voice is live. How can someone who is feeling "under the weather" put on such an impressive show? It seems like the music takes her over. She played a bunch of songs from the new album, starting with "Black Dove" and including "Jackie's Strength" and "Spark" of course (and a couple of others that I don't know yet). She did two solo songs, "Leather" and "China", and among the older songs that sounded great with the band were "Cornflake Girl" and "God". "Tear in Your Hand" (and "Precious Things" of course) particularly shone in this format. I actually didn't care much for the band version of "Waitress" and the version of "Horses" was unrecognizable as the original song and was kind of generic to me (generic in the sense that it sounded like the rest of the songs with the band and lost the tentative-growing-to-certainty feeling of the song as it appeared before which to me was its beauty.) There were three encores as part of that set list--I don't remember the exact order. Tori with a band is killer, and I'm grateful for the chance to see her at a relatively small venue. The crowd was noisy-ish, and I imagine that's only going to get worse with the bigger shows. Definitely worth catching when she comes back. Tickets are starting to go on sale for some of these shows right away. Get them. I'm beginning to think it would be worth it even if she plays in an arena. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 May 1998 10:15:49 -0700 (PDT) From: Steve VanDevender Subject: Cocteau Twins MRL220 writes: > HI: > > Can anybody suggest a good Cocteau Twins CD? If it had been the first Cocteau Twins album I'd bought I'd have bought others others a lot sooner. Of the other albums I have, I also really like _Milk and Kisses_ and _Blue Bell Knoll_. _Garlands_ isn't bad, but it's not much like any of their later stuff. I only really like one song on _Four Calendar Cafe_; some of the others on that album are just too weird because you can understand the lyrics. _Victorialand_ really fails to do much for me; it was the first Cocteau Twins album I bought and didn't initially encourage me to buy more. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 May 1998 10:17:41 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Footnote to Tori show comments Someone on the torinews list posted the setlist, so here it is for the curious--comments are by Ivy (Zovira@aol.com), the original post-er: Black Dove (January) Iieee Precious Things Liquid Diamonds Cornflake Girl Jackie's Strength Leather ("This is the first time I'm playing this song on the tour.")
