If you are into folk music, hey, this is a great place to be. If you aren't, then, hey, it's a great place to hear some great music and make fun of all the granola eaters (hey, stop throwing things at me! I'm just kidding!) Dar of course kicks butt...the Nields are the most fun band that most people haven't heard of, Laura Love grooves like no ones business, Patty Larkin is a phenomenal songwriter and guitar player...the only guy that i like of the bunch named is Richard Shindell...the rest i find kind of blah. Anyways, Falcon Ridge is a pretty durn cool place...it's farmland out in the boonies...rolling hills...you can purchase tickets daily or one ticket for the whole weekend...they even let you pitch tents up on the hills so that you don't have to "commute" to the concert each day...lots of arts and crafts around...the Drum Tent is pretty popular for having impromptu Jam sessions by amateur percussionists (kind of amusing at first, but it gets old after awhile)....be prepared for ANY weather... On the first day they have a "new artists" spotlight that kicks everything off...a bunch of smaller artists get to play 3-5 song sets and the audience votes on who they want to come back next year as big stage acts...Dee Carstensen was one of the ones i saw when i went...so was Lisa McCormick... The workshops, when well done, are great because you get to learn what drives the artists, how they write songs, how they use their voices and instruments, and more...it's a friendly atmosphere all the way around and it's easy to interact with the musicians... Speaking of Dee, I got to see her open for Jonatha Brooke at the Ram's Head tonight. Second time i've seen her open for JB. First time was when they played at Amherst in Sept. of 1996. Dee is fascinating...her voice reminds me of catie curtis and shawn colvin with a little more clarity...the Harp always adds a nice dimension...Dee has a new album coming out in July and the single that she performed from the album was stellar....it had a groovin' rhythm and was oh so beautiful... Jonatha was Jonatha....i can't figure out why i keep going to see her...i can see how some would find her boring...but i'm spellbound by her music, her voice...her on-stage manner is a bit goofy and can be seen as distant or airheaded, but i find it endearing...i guess it's that Amherst connection bias....she performed a song that she said she hadn't performed in 10 years that was the first song she wrote at Amherst...i think it's called "Always"...oh, and she performed "Dog Dreams" for the first time since her doggie, Rex, died last september... For the first encore, Jonatha brought out Dee to perform "So Much Mine" with her and Ingrid and the bassist/drummer guy (Dave? John?)... Oh, hey, i was sitting at a table next to some nice people and one of the persons turned out to be the Singer-songwriter named Suede...you know, the gal who made the brit-glam group Suede change their name to The London Suede? Last year she released a great live album called _Melissa Ferrick + 1_. It's a good mix of new material with stuff from the first two albums. And for those who liked the stripped down _Willing to Wait_ more than than _Massive Blur_, it's nice to hear the oldest songs in the solo-acoustic style. Originally released on Hidden Water, I think it's been re-released by another label. Why Atlantic ever dropped her is beyond me... But - I'm far happier to see that she "resorted" to this than to think herself above it. 8) And remember that Julia Fordham, with 4 successful albums (in other parts of the English-speaking world, anyway) and capable of selling out sizable venues (at least elsewhere) nearly 10 years ago found herself on the exact same stage in Toronto last year... Mmmmmph - just in time. I witnessed the glorious early April tulips and magnolias of Louisville and Nashville on my recent travels. Oh, very beautiful. It seemed so cold and grey when I returned. However, the lilacs are about to bloom. All is well. Alas, Veering from the Wave, otherwise known as "the debut solo record," has now been delayed until August. This time, we hope, it really will come out on August 18. And there really will be radio stations playing "the single" starting late July. Well, what we do know for sure is that Jenn will be touring and playing her little instruments in various clubs here and there. And if you have any questions about what they are you should just come to a show, or hold your horses until the web page is up in June. Oh, yes, there will be a section on ukuleles, and strumsticks. Please come down to the schmooze show at Arlene Grocery, this Monday, April 27 at 6:30pm. Jenn and the band (including Lucy Kaplansky on many bg. vocals!) will play a concise 45 minute set from 7-7:45. Then the cattle call continues, with another band at 8pm and another at 9pm......etc.... It's free, though. And promises to be fun - especially if you all come and outnumber the industry folk who have set this up. So, following are more gigs to put on the calendar. Joining me for many gigs in the Northeast will be Paul Bryan, bass player and singer (who tours with Merrie Amsterberg, Dennis Brennan, Jennifer Jackson, and sometimes Paula Cole). We toured the midwest together in April, finding time to hit some of the junk shops - Jenn came home with a red accordian. The tour was, naturally, a success.
