Here's what I know about Hugo Largo and maybe someone else can tell more. They had 2 albums out in the 80's, "Mettle" and "Drum", which was co-produced by Michael Stipe. Their singer, Mimi Goese, is solo now, and will have a new album out soon on David Byrne's label. Here's the info: LuAKA BoP Artists and Welcome to Luaka Bop Records . I saw her do a solo gig at Fez a couple of years ago. Hahn Rowe, former HL member, was in the band on electric violin. They were fantastic!!!! She also did a lot of sorta performance art stuff in the show. I hope Hahn will be at her shows in the future, though he is also touring/on records with Firewater (check out their new album, The Ponzi Scheme). All you Ecto-people would love Mimi if you don't already! I can't wait to hear her new album "Soak"!!! This stop was evidently a somewhat-impromptu addition to her two sold-out shows in San Francisco this past weekend. Unlike those of you who attend concerts on a weekly basis, I haven't been to one in some time; this event was a wake-up call to what I've been missing. :) The performance involved Kristin and her guitar, with simple but effective back lighting, in an auditorium similar to a medium-sized movie theater; the audience was nicely respectful and appreciative. Kristin came out and launched right into "Gazebo Tree" with minimal introduction. While the set focused on material from _Strange Angels_, she also played a number of songs from _Hips and Makers_ (I tried to keep a mental tally during the show, but I ended up just enjoying the music, rather than trying to memorize a set list -- sorry :). She played pretty much everything I hoped to hear, and included two songs I didn't recognize. If anyone else has seen her perform recently and knows, are these acoustic versions of Throwing Muses songs, or what? After playing several songs in a row, she began talking a bit; over the course of the show, she told a number of humorous anecdotes, primarily about her family. She played an initial set of just under an hour, then came back for an "encore" that was really another half-hour mini set. She seemed to have a little trouble with her voice on the high notes toward the end of the show, but it didn't detract in any way from the effectiveness of the performance. It was a real pleasure to experience Kristin communicating with her songs live. I highly recommend any fan of her music to see her when she visits your area. Saturday she will be at The Stage at UCSD campus at 9:00 pm with Gregory Page and his band. Both will be great shows so come show your support and hear some great music! And now some really EXCITING news!!!! Elizabeth has been asked to play the Lillith Fair in San Diego on June 26th at the Del Mar Faigrounds! HOW COOL HUH!!!!!! We're so excited! Elizabeth is also in the midst of creating her own personal web page so I will let you know once it's up and running! Take care all of you and i hope to see you at a show very soon! Barenaked Ladies are supposed to have a new album out around July 7th...supposedly, it follows in the footsteps of Rock Spectacle in snaring that live vibe of theirs....they recorded it live in studio and are trying to produce it without too much dubbing and cutting....from what i read in Billboard magazine, the songs are more pop and more rock... Heather Nova's album _Siren_ is supposed to come out June 2nd with the first single "London Rain" (i think that's what it's called) being serviced to radio on May 19th. The Lilith Fair cd limited edition release that i told you about earlier is going to be digipak cardboard packaging...it folds out to a length of 10 inches...so instead of the normal jewel casing, you'll get a package like Pearl Jam's VS, or the Indigo Girl's 1200 Curfews... hey tab...join in-the-wings....you'll like it there...many tara fans waiting to greet you with open arms... :) Tanya Donelly and Holly Cole were on last week's Mountain Stage...i only got to hear Tanya because WXPN lost the broadcast of it after the first hour and holly played in the second hour...I had been fostering the hope that Tanya Donelly had improved in her live performance, but hearing her was kinda painful. I saw Belly perform in 1993 at the HFStival and wasn't impressed by tanya's singing...i found her releases after _Star_ to be excellent and her voice seemed to be much improved, but this live performance on Mountain Stage reminded me that her voice doesn't cut it live. Maybe it was just an off day for her or she was wary of playing for such a large radio audience, i dunno. Paul "i wish money grew on trees. I like it a lot. Her voice is equal parts Heidi Berry and Marianne Faithfull, which makes it somehow mostly Anna Domino. Her delivery suggests the same influences, with a little Jim Morrison via Morrissey. The music has a little of Roxy Music's dark playfulness, a little mid-career Pink Floyd dark melodrama, and a healthy dose of Joy Division post-industrial drone. There's even the occasional Dead Can Dance dark-ages burlesque, and once, in 'Maggots,' I'd swear she was Danielle Dax. And yet her sound seems completely original. Her lyrics, though they often have the mythic timelessness of Heidi Berry's, seem more relevant and less self-indulgently mysterious: "Space Unadorned" Where do I begin and end in space She wondered as she flew into the night And heard it calling her name In the country, A. was with her then Once again she heard a silent voice Telling her to stop you're going too far Turn back Nonetheless she felt no conscious fear Breathing soft to God as in the instant of release Under the wide and starry sky Dig me a grave and let me lie Glad do I live and gladly do I die Where do I begin and end in space Where do I begin and end in space When you've seen her face You can believe in Natural Law Hid in every space She'll tell you why the sky is blue If you can read between the lines You know the Wheel is already in motion Where do I begin and end in space Where do I begin and end in space RATING: $25 (but available domestically on 4AD) - -- charley n.p. It was called something along the lines of "Maggots two--this is all I have to write about in my Kaczynski shack in the hills". Apparently he (Ivo) felt that the title was a bit too long. Kendra being the sensitive type she is, at least to criticism over her titles, was, to say the least, a bit peeved. In fact, when she was working on 5 ways of disapperaring, there was a working title of "I wish my pump organ was a moog, but OOoops! silly me I have no el-ec-triss-ity!!" Of course it rhymed, but the title was a bit wordy and was rejected only to be retitled later as "Valley of the Morning Sun". A bit ironic, but that depends on who you ask I suppose. Anyway, creative differences abbounded once more in the 4AD realm, and Kendra hiked (furiously) w/ pump organ on her back from the LA office to home. "The gig is up" she fumed, waving her fists in the air (almost losing her balance and her dignity). Ivo, beginning to retort with "you have to perform *live* before you can actually give up the "gig", but realizing that it wasn't worth the trouble and anal-retentive baggage that inhabited that statement, instead bit his bottom lip and smugly replied "be careful." Kendra's angst dissipated into disappointed and saddness soon thereafter with the outcome of her relationship with 4AD, so she pondered her illustrious return to the roster on her journey home. Now, what I am going to reveal is between me, Kendra, my supplier, his agent, his mistress & her family, my dog (who is from Belgium, so doesn't really pose a threat), my twenty-five neighbors, the person in 2A's relatives' moderately sized militia, and a goatherder with incredible hearing named Bob, and of course the 418 of you. In other words, shhh. Kendra has assumed a new identity. Yes, I'm serious. Remember she was walking home and during this time she recalled a discussion she overheard in the 4AD office concerning a new signee from Iceland called Gus Gus. She ingeniously devised a plan that would continue her walk on past her home, through the straits of leeberhauden, over the many lakes, bays, and rivers of the Canadian Yukon, stopping ever so briefly at the Planet Hollywood in Greenland for a drink, stealing two rafts (one for the pump organ -- duh!) and paddling her way to Iceland with her bare hands. She searched for 30 minutes and (eureka) found the elusive Gus Gus on a streetcorner named "Desire". She introduced herself as Kjendra ver smilth, the world famous pump-organ extraordinare. Now Gus Gus had been auditioning as of late for a reclusive pump organ ingenue, so this was a bit of a coincidence to them. I would go into detail, but it's not necessary so, to make a long story short, they took her in!! IMO Ivo will never notice. The pump organ will blend with the Gus Gus scenery so well, and her new name as well as her disguise (colored contacts *and* a new t-shirt that reads "everyone says I have flavor") will safely ensure her place on the 4AD roster for many years to come. Just don't let her name the songs. jason srilank@aol.com Date: Sat, 1 Nov 1997 20:22:18 -0600 From: Jeremy L Orr Subject: Re: kendra smith - ---from sister of the moon: > i have kendra smith's '95 release "five ways of > dissappearing", and i was just wondering if she has any > others out, or if anyone knows if she plans to put anymore > out. I think her only other solo release was back in '92, a mini album by (or called, depending on how you look at it) Kendra Smith Presents: The Guild of Temporal Adventurers. It was released on 10" and CD by a label called Fiasco, and it's been out of print for a couple years now...a second release, an EP called _Dolomite of the Angels_, was planned, but I don't think it was ever released. Before she put The Guild together, she worked with David Roback in a band called Opal, who released an album on SST called _Happy Nightmare Baby_. After she left Opal, that band evolved into Mazzy Star, and Rough Trade released a posthumous album of early Opal recordings (with the inspired title _Early Recordings_). And before Opal, she was playing bass for the Dream Syndicate. Since Kendra reportedly lives in a very...er, minimalist setting somewhere in the forests of California, and her hatred for the recording industry is well-known, her recordings are fairly sporadic. It's because of this that I've often wondered if she even has an ongoing contract with 4AD at all (i.e. I can imagine _Five Ways of Disappearing_ being a one-off deal). - ---Jeremy Date: Sun, 2 Nov 1997 00:11:53 -0800 From: Jon Subject: Re: Kendra Smith So glad to see interest in one who rarely gets mention here (or anywhere) and is so deserving of an audience (or listeners). > I think her only other solo release was back in '92, a mini album by (or > called, depending on how you look at it) Kendra Smith Presents: The Guild > of Temporal Adventurers. Right, this is the only other release, adn I don't think Fiaso is around anymore. I have one other release on the label (off hand can't think of what). Wished I'd picked up the 10", but the CD was first issued in a neat cardstock sleeve that is meant to be overlap folded. But nevermind the package: this mini-album is so incredible. A blend of dissonant blues, pop, psychedelia. A cover of Can's "She Brings the Rain" is so befitting. It's not quite as outright down as Mazzy (IMO), but when I listen to it I detect a slight positive almost happy tone in her voice. A little melancholy and magical. 4AD would do good to get the rights to this and reissue it. > Before she put The Guild together, she worked with David Roback in a band > called Opal, who released an album on SST called _Happy Nightmare Baby_. > After she left Opal, that band evolved into Mazzy Star, and Rough Trade > released a posthumous album of early Opal recordings (with the inspired > title _Early Recordings_). They got Hope to fill in the rest of the way, and eventually regrouped. Both Opal CDs are worth having. Beautiful distant bluesy feel. You can hear the move towards Mazzy Star. The Rought Trade "Early Recordings" is out of print in the US long ago, but I have seen on rare occasions, listings for it from Rough Trade Germany. > Since Kendra reportedly lives in a very...er, minimalist setting > somewhere in the forests of California, and her hatred for the recording > industry is well-known, her recordings are fairly sporadic. She is one of those artists, who I can appreciate not knowing much about, or reading interviews. Her songs speak for themselves. I had the promo letter-pressed postcards that 4AD issue for "Five Ways". I believe done by IPR, and I had them specially framed in a lovely antique matte with antique copper frame. One of my favorite 4AD artworks, not by 23v.
