I happen to be in Cleveland, OH at that time! How do I get hold of tickets for this show, and how long time in advance do I have to get them? aLViN - -- :r.signature ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Apr 1998 13:27:49 -0500 From: mbittner@juno.com Subject: Local thoughts Looks like Omaha is becoming a bit more ectoish lately. The first of next month Holly Cole is coming to town, and I'm planning on going. Yippee!! The local scene has a couple of wonderful artists everyone should be aware of. The first is an all-female quartet of sisters called Mulberry Lane. Beautiful harmonies. Check out: http://www.radiks.net/mulberry I beleive they have some sound samples on site. Their first CD is being released 8 May, and I'm planning on going to the CD release party. The second is a Celtic voice, whose name is Jill Anderson. Also wonderful music. Definitely more toward the "standard" Celtic instead of the more worldly Loreena. Neile might even like her. :-) I had a chance to meet her at our local Celtic Fest yesterday, and so far she's working on word of mouth instead of an advertising campaign. You know, I completely forgot to mention Samson since she's looking for a label. However, she might already know about them because the CD maker is the same as McKinnely's (sp?). Has anybody told these artists currently shopping for labels - The Nields and suddenly, tammy! come to mind - about Samson? I think it would be awesome to get as many as possible on Samson, then they would include Omaha - hopefully - on their tour schedule. Or we could hang out at the more "famous" places and look for them. :-) Imagine, Omaha becoming ecto Heaven...it boggles the mind...;-) Matt Bittner np: Jill Anderson, _cool of the day_ nr: currently in between books _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. It's not Loreena's inclusion of "world" sounds that have made me lose interest in her but the produced blandness that makes it all sound alike to my ear. I actually like only _some_ Celtic music because I find much of it too sweet/bland on its own without any world influence at all. For example, Kate Price does nothing for me. Cordelia's Dad, while it's American not Celtic, makes me sit up and take notice, though. But anyway...glad you've found some local music you're enjoying, Matt! Me, I'm watching a friend's career skyrocket. The guy who gave me the advance cassette of Jane's _Maria_ is in a band called Harvey Danger. I've tried many times to make myself like Loreena's music because she's such a fave on this list and I do go above and beyond the usual benefit of the doubt when it comes to an ectoconcensus, BUT...she bores me to tears. It sounds like Eastern/Celtic elevator music to me. The lyrics leave me wishing she was strictly instrumental, too. There...I've said it. Of course, I could be politically correct and take the blame by saying that her subtlety is beyond my meager appreciation, but NAHHHH...she just bores me. Have a stellar week...Java ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Apr 1998 23:57:44 From: meredith Subject: EWS on demand and other stories Hi! This is just a quick note to let everyone who might be wondering know that Yves made it here to the U.S. in one piece, and I think he left our place today intact as well. :) JeffW, Mike Curry, woj and I met him at his hotel yesterday afternoon, and we proceeded down to the East Village, where we hit two of the CD shops on St. Mark's Place (St. Mark's Sounds and Smash) and emerged with way too many CDs for a wonderfully small amount of $$$. The $2 bins outside of Sounds were the real bonanza: we were just throwing CDs at Yves and he pretty much bought them all. :) We found a couple gems, including the new Dr. Didg album and Chris Botti's solo album from last year, which features one song with the Blue Nile and another with Jonatha Brooke. It's a nice CD, definitely good put-on-in-the-background-while-entertaining-guests music. Then, after a scrumptious dinner at one of the Indian places on 6th St. we went down to the Meow Mix, where Mila Drumke was scheduled to play. We ran into John Henshon standing outside, and saw Mila and Lyris standing outside too, and requested that she play "Under The Ivy" because Jeff had come all the way down from Boston for the show, and Yves was in all the way from France. :) I think she officially certified us insane, but she did play it at the end of the show, which was great. Inside we met Paul Blair when he arrived, and the ecto contingent was complete. Mila's set was short, as always, but pretty good. The sound was awful: for a place that hosts live music events several times a week, you'd think they'd have the acoustics of the space figured out by now. Maybe they should just concentrate on having more Xena nights instead. :) Jeff gave Yves a ride up to Boston this afternoon. While we were talking last night we realized that if the scheduling works out Yves can see Susan McKeown with us in Middletown on Thursday night. Any other local ectofolk planning to go to this show (Chuck)? We're thinking of meeting up at Taj on Main St. for Indian food beforehand (I'm sensing a theme :), so anyone who's planning on going should e-me for the details. Jeffy responded: >Oh, and to bring Cohn back around further to ecto-ish-ness, most of the tracks >on the new disc were mixed by Kevin Killen (for you non KaTe lovers out there, >he mixed _The Sensual World_. Of course, there are plenty of people who >thought his work on that album was a disaster, so maybe I shouldn't be >mentioning it... ;-) The Chris Botti album we picked up yesterday was also mixed by Kevin Killen (not to mention Jerry Marotta plays drums on most of the tracks). It doesn't sound too bad, but then again I could never see what everyone's problem with the mixing of _TSW_ was, either. Paul fonted: >I'm still amazed at the amount of cds, tapes, and other assorted junk Meth and >Woj have...I assume that when you moved to CT, you kept the general organized >disheveledness that you had in NJ :) I think we did, even though we have about twice as much space now. :} I'm sharing this desk space with piles of tapes, for example, and woj has the keyboard of the big PC wedged in between piles of CDs on that desk. Yves took pictures before he left today. It's scary to think your home has become some sort of national monument. ;> >> I still maintain that there should be no genre classifications. If I ever >> open my record shop, everything will be together, categorized only by the >> alphabet. > >do you have any idea how annoying that would be, not only for the employees, >but also the shoppers...or how brilliant it is :) Why on earth would that be annoying?!? Especially for the employees. No more "gee, where the heck should we file this?" If the last name begins with R, file it with R. If the band name starts with A, file it under A. If in doubt, consult the Internet to see which is the band name and which is the album title. No big deal. And from the customer's standpoint, I don't see how that would be annoying either. If you're a browser you're a browser, and to me it's a lot more annoying to have to go to three or four different sections of the store, even if I'm not looking for anything in particular. And if you are looking for something specific, it's a hell of a lot easier to just look for it by name rather than to second-guess the store management to figure out where they might have put it. It look me forever to find Project Lo in Tower, for example: I never in a million years would have thought to look for it under jazz, but for some reason that's where they decided to put it. Beats me. Cyoakha implored: >SINCE MOST OF YOU ARE IN THE EAST AND MID-WEST, I NEED YOUR HELP!!!We are >unsigned and self-booked (that means me, the lead singer calling strange >towns and unknown clubs) If you each took one minute and told me one place >that ecto bands play in your home town (and phone numbers please...) then >we will come and play there and I will certainly comp you an invite! The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, CT might be a possibility: all of their contact info can be found at . The only good place for live music in New Haven is Toad's Place, but they really don't do much for unsigned independent artists, unfortunately. In New York City there's Arlene Grocery, which has a pass-the-hat system, but they've given lots of otherwise unknown artists and bands a place to play and build a following. I thought I had their number, but I don't, sorry. I hope this little bit at least helps! That's it for now, ja, you betcha (sorry, I re-watched the first half of _Fargo_ earlier this evening)... +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #122 **************************
