As the third Ectophile mentioned here, I unfortunately can't compare this concert to previous ones, since it was my first Loreena McKennitt concert. For the first half of the concert I'd say Klaus is right - it "just sounded like the record". Not that this is a bad thing, for her records are wonderful, but you don't *really* need a concert then. For the second half (which featured Loreenas older songs), her idling Porsches at least went into first gear ;-). You could see the potential...... I did like the concert very much, especially the second half, but I'll definitely go to another one should the opportunity arise. I just am unhappy that I missed the opportunity to see her in concert a couple of years ago for just 2+ hours of driving to the place... Well..... Time to bite the bullet. Dan and Jeff Burka responded to my screed about Ticket Bazzturd. Dan: >>I'm surprised you were able to do THAT well, considering Loreena has a big hit song crossing over to several formats right now. << When I was down south for Mardi Gras last month I heard Mummer's Dance every other hour on the rental car radio while driving through Baldwin County Alabama. I guess if Loreena's influence has reached that neck of the woods (it was an NPR affiliate) I suppose I was being hopelessly optimistic. Jeff: >>Naw, close to Loreena is front row (but then, I've never seen her any other way)<< I'm green with envy. This will be the first time I've had the pleasure of seeing her live. >>to be sure! I remember once being 13th in line for a Sting concert and getting 25th row...<< My rant may have been prompted more by past bad experiences then this particular encounter. When Tori did the Beacon I called them the second the tickets went on sale and after battling through the busy signals I ended up in the 23rd row. What pissed me off big time is that a friend called them up Three Days Later and got tickets in the 17th row. Neile suggested I take my tale of woe about getting shut out at Irving Plaza to the Tori lists. I did post a plea on RDT but I'm not holding my breath. If it weren't for the fact that I enjoy Tori shows less and less each time I see her, I'd probably be more upset than I am about getting shut out for the first time. When I saw Ani DeFranco at Irving Plaza it was a great show but the place sucked ferociously. Same thing for John Zorn's Naked City. At least with Zorn's somewhat difficult to listen to music, the skanklyness of the place seemed a bit more appropriate. He was doing more of his Kristallnacht/Painkillers, Yamatsuka Eye screechingly painful vocals, Buckethead bizzaro carryings on kind of stuff instead of the cartoon jazz that I prefer. Instead of doing one night in a shitty venue like Irving Plaza, I don't know why she doesn't just hole up in the Plaza for ten days and do a week at Town Hall or several nights at Carnegie Hall. Lilith Fair launches talent search By KAREN BLISS -- Jam!Music More than two-and-a-half months before Sarah McLachlan's female-fronted music festival kicks off June19 in Portland, Lilith Fair fever is already high. While a press conference is scheduled April 16 in Los Angeles to announce the 30-plus North American concert dates, the Lilith Fair camp has just unveiled plans to present local talent searches in 14 of the markets in which the festival will be playing, with the winner getting a slot on the side stage. (This year's mainstage lineup includes McLachlan, Natalie Merchant, Sinead O'Connor, Paula Cole, Shawn Colvin, Erykah Badu, Missy Elliot, Sheryl Crow, and The Indigo Girls). "Sarah and the partners at Lilith Fair wanted to have some sort local talent on every Lilith date and came up with the idea of a talent search," says Pierre Tremblay, VP of Nettwerk Management in Vancouver. "In every single market, be it Indianapolis or Toronto or Raleigh, North Carolina, we want somebody who is actually from that city performing on Lilith Fair." In keeping with the spirit of Lilith Fair, only female-fronted acts are eligible to apply, but they must be acoustic with no more than three members. "We've got so many artists on the side stage and technically it was the only way it could work," explains Tremblay. "But you can still have somebody like a Kinnie Starr, who has a bit of an edge but can do it in a way that works within our production needs." The judging for each event will be organized locally by the respective promoter, but Lilith Fair submitted "rules" to each promoter, outlining how they want the judging handled.  "We want a representative form the promoter, a representative from a radio station, a local press person and somebody in the music industry in that market, be it an artist or whatever, so it's not all one-sided," says Tremblay. The only Canadian talent search announced so far is in Toronto. Two winners will be chosen to perform at one of two Lilith Fair '98 performances at The Molson Amphitheatre in mid-August. To qualify, a two-song demo must be submitted by mail or in person to: Levi's/Lilith fair Acoustic Talent Search c/o Universal Concerts Canada @ Molson Amphitheatre 909 Lakeshore Blvd. W., 3rd. Floor Toronto, Ontario M6K 3L3. Deadline is April 10 at 6 p.m. (ET) The tapes will then be judged by "the talent department of Universal Concerts", according to Denise Dorchak, assistant talent buyer at Universal Concerts Canada inToronto. Finalists will be contacted by phone on April17th. (A list of names will also be posted on the Universal website: www.universalconcerts.ca) "Out of all of those applicants, 20 participants will be chosen to perform one song on April 21st at the Opera House for a panel of judges consisting of -- and this still hasn't been confirmed," says Dorchak -- "but probably somebody from (radio station) The Edge, somebody from (weekly magazine) Now, maybe somebody from MuchMusic and maybe somebody from our office."  Admission for the April 21 talent-search concert is free. The show kicks off at 8 p.m. While all the Canadian dates will take place in August, they won't be happening back-to-back. According to Tremblay, the festival will travel to Toronto, return to America, then come back and do Western Canada. I'm sure many on this list know people who would want to do this. Jason ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 05 Apr 1998 16:32:28 -0400 From: roo@brown.edu (Kay Cleaves) Subject: Grey Eye Glances concert review 4/4 Hey folks In light of dave's recent postings about Grey eye glances, I figured I'd fill y'all in on their concert that I dragged my pal Matt to last night in Cambridge, MA. It was this tiny little place, which I'm sure Boston ectophiles already know about (the Kendall Cafe), as it had signed posters all over the walls from Tara MacLean, Leah Andreone, etc. I mean, tiny. They couldn't even fit the whole band on the stage--the drum kit was on the floor. And they were lit with the oh so lovely glow of Christmas lites strung about the stage. But they squeezed over 100 people into the space for the second of two sold out shows. Anyway, the show started at 9pm, and as Dwayne the keyboardist said, "there's no closing act, so sing along 'cause we'll play for as long as you like." I guess it went until about midnight with a short break. Cool. Jennifer Nobel was absolutely adorable, and the woman next to me kept commenting, "She's so tiny!" And it was true--she looked almost dwarfed behind her huge guitar. When she put it down and sang, she closed her eyes and put her hands together and it looked like she was praying. Although she was stuck right behind a post so I had to hop up on the back of the bench to see her. The basic three were there, plus a drummer and an electric guitarist that they stuck in the back who looked like he really didn't belong there at all. He sounded great, though. Anyways, they mostly played stuff from Eventide, but they hit some of the older songs, and three or four new ones from the CD they just wrapped. Apparently they had played on the radio that afternoon. Boston is apparently 2nd behind Philly in GEG sales, so they seemed happy to be there. But the set list was: 1. The Me you see? 2. In the company of you 3. Days to dust 4. Sleepy (New) 5. Far (New) 6. Song of Leaving...at least I think so 7. and all I've loved, I've loved alone 8. Hard 9. Angel 10. Passing of the Evening - --break-- 11. Something to live for 12. These walls 13. The Close of the Day (New) 14. I Know What It Means 15. Snow...the old version 16. and 17. Songs I didn't recognize 18. Before you go 19.--We missed the last song, since we had to head back to Providence...probably was Halfway Back, though, since I know they hadn't played it yet... Admittedly, the set list is rather lacking--I'm rather new to the GEG scene. Were there any other Ectophiles there that could clue me in? Anyways, the new songs...Sleepy is about the friend that just wouldn't leave. Kind of cute, with lines like "If you dont stop talking I might have to kill you...". Upbeat, almost a country feel. Far is a ballad, and quite lovely. The Close of the Day is also a ballad which didn't strike me, but might grow if I heard it again. They had the whole house boppin' along by the end of it. There was a whole crowd of people that couldn't get seats, and they were all kind of bouncing by the end of the first set. Dwayne is definitely the most charismatic of the group. At one point he started talking like Chewbacca and had the audience try it back to him. :) They were rather nostalgic about the old days--apparently they had played the Kendall six years ago to an audience of three, so this was a distinct improvement. However, he also mentioned that their old stuff was "not as pretentious" as Eventide... So we completed the collection of their old CD's, and got them autographed. Matt went up to chat with the band (I was stuck behind a table with a sprained ankle) and said hi from the ecto list, I believe. (Matt, delurk sometime, eh?) We were really upset to have to leave early. Anyhow, that's that--thanx again to the ectophiles for another cool band! - --Kay - --------------------------------------------------- Kay S. Here is an organized summary of the history, and this years event. History The idea for the first house concert of this series started with two artists from San Diego California. Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel were on a tour of the Northeast United States. They had played TT The Bear's in Cambridge Massachusetts and were going to play Albany New York when they found out that show was cancelled. Because of this cancellation they were left with an extra few days in the Boston area. They decided they wanted to play a show. They called Larry Greenfield in Los Angeles California and asked if he could find them a place to play. On April 16th at 8pm Larry posted to the Jewel Mailing List The Everyday Angels. He asked if there was anyone in the Boston area who would be willing to give their home for a livingroom concert. Christopher Snyder answered Larry's call for a place to play and by the end of the day it was decided that on April 18th the EDA Cafe would take place. Immediately the call was put out on the Jewel list that this concert would infact happen. Within the span of two days over 20 EDAs made plans to go to Dorchester for the EDA Cafe. The result was an amazing evening featuring two amazing performers and a group of wonderful music loving fans. It is very hard to describe exactly what the concert was like. Even though the artists and fans didn't know each other there was an instant familiarity that provided a perfect enviroment for relaxed, intimate, special moments. This concert manifested many things including a tape-tree on the Jewel mailing list, and a Living Room tour that took Cindy Lee, and Elizabeth from one side of the country to the other, and The concert has also given other artists intrest in having Living Room tours of their own. Here is the FAQ type info for this years show What? EDA Cafe 2 Where? 39 Longfellow St. Boston MA Home of the Snyder's When? April 24th 1998 The show will start around 8 with dinner beforehand. Time for my monthly update on shows but before I start, let me make a quick pitch. Susan needs you- to sign onto the "believers" list! This is a very quiet list, for the most part, but as a member of 30 e-mail discussion groups, I have to tell you that the signal to noise ratio is most advantageous. Not a lot of drivel, but great reviews and good info for the musicians amongst us. believers only speak when they have something intelligent to say, a rarity indeed in the net culture. You'll still get the announcements, on the same schedule, but the interactive nature will allow you to link up with other believers for activities before and after shows. And the list is read by Susan's management, so what you have to say on believers does reach Susan. Also, Maryl Neff from NOMA has asked me to remind you that Susan's albums are available at: http://songs.com Susan's "Live at the Tin Angel" is currently #4 on the NOMA top 25 list. NOMA offers an alternative to the average schlock on the radio. As they say "It's like a big record store-with nothing but good music".
