'lo all... I know very little about an artist I'm trying to identify, and thought, hell, I bet someone on Ecto will know... (I hope, I hope...) I was napping the other day and woke to find the local station paying something that sounded a *lot* like Tara Maclean. It wasn't though. I managed to stay awake long enough hear the DJ quickly blow through the artist's name before I nodded back off. As you might guess, I can not remember the name now. The best I can do is "Nicole Imbroglio". I know that's not right - it's probably not even close - - but just in case I thought I'd throw that it. BTW, the station was SF's Live 105 which normally leans to "Modern rock", and commercial punk / ska-punk, with *little* bits of maybe Sarah, Bjork, Lorenna, KaTe, Heather Nova, etc. TIA, Drew ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Mar 1998 02:24:10 -0500 From: Jeff Wasilko Subject: Re: Can you help me identify an artist? Some of Carrie's musicians bring along that twangy sort of fullness that most people associate with country music; listen carefully to the melody and (if audible) her guitar work, and you'll see that she's still firmly in the area between folk and pop. :-) I only mention this because I happen not to be a "modern" country music fan, but I love Carrie's work. I don't want other similarly-inclined listeners to be unnecessarily dissuaded from trying her albums. :-) Carrie started out in her first couple of albums doing folk music with very uneven production; sometimes it sounded very good, and sometimes the arrangements buried her voice and guitar. In the couple of albums previous to this, she has been searching for a balance, which often leaned too heavily toward the big band sound. We've seen her live a few times where the band almost didn't fit on the stage; they made quite a sound, but Carrie's finest moments are just her and the guitar. Of course, we've seen her this way far more often than not, so I'm probably biased... Luckily, she's heading back to that mode with the current album, and it showcases the beauty of her songs as they deserve. Catch her live with just the guitar and her incredible voice (as we did at Borders a couple of weeks ago), and you won't be disappointed. > Ani DiFranco - Little Plastic Castle (hands down -- my > favorite Ani album yet!) Become a whole individual *first* before you commit yourself, body and soul, to another. I base this on just one listen, though, so I'll have to go back and listen some more before I come to a conclusion. The Ani album I really love is Out of Range. I don't hear people mentioning that one too much, but I think it's a dynamo of a CD. I haven't heard Dilate or Living in Clip (but I don't tend to like live albums that much - you get neither the energy of being there live, nor the benefits of a studio production). I just find the songs on Out of Range to be intense, lyrically powerful, and musically interesting. The lyrics on Little Plastic Castle are clever and poetic as usual, but don't have the same narrative drive as those on Out of Range - instead, they seem to meander from one subject to another until I'm not sure just what the point of the song is. I also thought many of the songs on Little Plastic Castle were just too stripped down for my tastes. Out of Range has much fuller arrangements, giving the songs a lot more punch and texture. So, given what I've said above, could some of you Ani fans recommend a good Ani album for me? All I've really heard is Out of Range and Puddle Dive. How is Dilate? Is it more similar to Out of Range or to Little Plastic Castle? How about some of the others? The whole "feel" of the album is much more like LPC. But I think if you rully liked Out of Range, you might also like Imperfectly, which I picked up over the summer because it was the only one left I hadn't already gotten (when I heard it, I was saddened that I'd waited so long to buy it!). The songs on it are thoughtful, beautiful, and vurry well-done. And somehow the "feel" of Imperfectly is similar to that of Out of Range, at least to me. Of course, my favourite songs from Out of > Range are "Falling is Like This", "You Had Time", and "If He Tries > Anything", Thanks for your comments. I like Falling is Like This, too ("one minute there was road beneath us, and the next was sky..."). But I also love Buildings and Bridges, Out of Range (both versions), and my most favorite of all, Letter to a John (absolutely stunning lyrics). Face Up and Sing is great too - I love the line, "You don't have to be a supermodel to do the animal thing." Not Done Looking Yet (I'm not sure of that title) is another favorite, and I also like the one that goes "Life is a B movie, it's stupid and it's strange." The lyrics on this album are *so* strong. And each song really makes its own point, presents a complete idea and doesn't stray off into some other line of thought. Buildings and Bridges is about being willing to be open and flexible. Out of Range is about trying to break out of a pattern of domestic violence when you've grown up with it, and your mother has grown up with it, and so on. Letter to a John is about a prostitute who wants some respect for her work and then to be left alone to live her own life. I love lyrics like this - really direct and to the point, with each line and each verse contributing to the meaning of the song. It's clean that way. But she doesn't sacrifice poetry, either. If Imperfectly is like that, I'll definitely have to check it out. Thank you for the advice! Definitely. It didn't really impress on first (or even second or third) listen, but now I absolutely love it -- with the exception of that damned mariachi band on the title song, which is just too distracting for words. "Glass House" is a killer, and "Pulse" is never too long. >The Ani album I really love is Out of Range. I don't hear people >mentioning that one too much, but I think it's a dynamo of a CD. Me too. It's quite possibly the best live album I've ever heard. Give it a chance! >The lyrics on this album are *so* strong. And each song really makes its >own point, presents a complete idea and doesn't stray off into some other >line of thought. That describes my personal fave, _Not A Pretty Girl_ to a T. _NAPG_ is still one of my Desert Island Discs, and I don't see it falling off that list anytime soon. Do check out _Imperfectly_ (heck, no Ani fan should be without any of her albums :), but please keep in mind that _NAPG_ contains to my ear similar arrangements to _Out of Range_, with a bit fuller sound, and crisper production. There are some real gems on the album, from the rocking "Cradle And All" to the wrenching "Sorry I Am" to the *real* "32 Flavors". There are songs about one-night stands, relationships that probably should have been one-night stands, schoolgirl crushes (word on the street is that "This Bouquet" was written about Greg Brown), and capital punishment ("justice isn't something just anyone can afford"), just to name a few.
