It's a wonderful album: full of African and jazz influences (even more so than the others), and beautiful harmonies, and personal lyrics. Ashley financed the recording of this one herself. Ashley is in the process of looking for record companies and distributers to help deal with the album. In the mean time she's said that people can get CDs from her directly. People in the UK can get a CD by sending a cheque for 11 pounds, payable to Ashley Maher, to: Ashley Maher c/o Spinwild Records 13 St. Charles Square, London W10 6EF. People in other parts of the planet can get one by sending a cheque for $18 to: Ashley Maher, 935 Hartzell St Pacific Palisades, CA 90272 USA. I've put this information on the Ashley Maher web site, but I'm afraid I haven't had time to put up cover photos, liner notes, or any other useful information on the new album. I'm away for the next couple of weeks, but promise that, when I get back, I'll do all of this. I haven't been able to read ecto in a long time. For a while there I thought my schedule was getting under control, but I was wrong! I work way way way too much. However, this weekend, I've decided to work less (hopefully the gods will smile on me and keep me from getting paged too much), and go down to LA to see this wonderful band perform live. They're local to San Jose, so I don't know if they are known on ecto yet. But it seems like many ectophiles would like them, so for all I know I am way behind the times:) They've got strong drums/bass/guitar, a mix of male/female vocals, very stunning female vocals. the male singer (Ed) is more often the lead, but Tami sings a few songs herself, and is a noticeable presence on nearly all songs. They've done excellent work, and their live shows are _wonderful_. They put a great deal of effort into everything they do, and they enjoy it, and it all shows. You can check out some sound clips on their web site, www.ghostlikesun.com of course. (I don't think any of the clips do them justice at all, but, you can get a vague idea). So, I'll be at the show mentioned below at Luna Park, in LA on Sunday. I'd love to see some ectophiles there! I've no idea what i'll be wearing, but brown top and black jeans looks likely, and my hair is currently pretty ordinary looking, short, medium to dark brown, and i wear glasses, and i'm about 6 feet tall. So hopefully you'll recognize me if you see me there, and come introduce yourself! --jessica Follows is a message from Leigh, the guitar player. There was a show last wednesday in SF, and there are two in LA, sunday and monday night. I'll be at the sunday night show. - ------- Forwarded Message Subject: GhostLikeSun live shows-March Date: Thu, 5 Mar 98 23:44:27 -0000 From: Leigh Newsome Greetings... I'm very surprised these companies use the Track-At-Once type, since > their business is all about producing audio CDs to order and this is a > significant limitation. Perhaps they should all read the CD-R FAQ at: > > http://www.cd-info.com/CDIC/Technology/CD-R/FAQ.html Let's hope all three do... especially if Musicmaker wants to continue offering music by Dave Soldier (whose "The Apothesis of John Brown" was the work in question) and others who allow one movement to segue into another... Such "disc-at-once" technology would also benefit sSB and CDuctive customers who have enough savvy or daring to create a seamless "dance mix" CD of some sort. I'm glad your comments got CC'd to everyone, Dan (I've CC'd this response to Alan at CDuctive just in case). This kind of dialogue can only help the custom CD makers do better, and attract more acts to them as a result. John reminded: >Michelle Kinney 830 PM >The Living Room in NYC. >84 Stanton St. >212.533.7235 Sorry you couldn't make it, John. It was a fine show. It was my first time at The Living Room, and I liked it a lot. It's *really* tiny, but they make great tea, and it's a nice space to hear good music. Mila Drumke is going to be there on the 28th, and even though I'm probably going to be totally wiped from my travels I definitely don't want to miss seeing her there. Saw a lot of the usual suspects in the audience -- Nick Hill and his brother Tim, and of course Sam and Hillary, who were doing a fine job keeping little Ruby contained while her mom (and at the end, her dad) were playing. :) It's scary -- the first time I ever saw the Chanting House play Michelle was very pregnant, and now there's this cute little hellion running all over the place charming the pants off everybody. I wonder if Ruby will end up playing guitar, cello, or both? :) Michelle was with her trio, Mississippi Peace. They did a set of really really cool experimental, mannered instrumental music (those instruments being cello, violin, electric bass, and a variety of Fisher Price toys ;) interspersed with more conventional songs. I have to confess I liked the instrumental bits much better -- Michelle has a nice voice, but it's not very strong, and I found myself wishing I weren't such a lyrics person, because while the music was great, I just couldn't get past the weak lyrics. (That's my one quibble with Chris Cunningham's solo album, too. Ah, well.) Still, I'm very glad we made the trek down to NYC. Last night woj and I met up with JeffW to see Susan Werner at the Iron Horse. As always, it was a great show. We got there halfway through the opening set by Kevin So, an Asian-American singer/songwriter with distinct blues and R&B influences, who was too obviously trying to be Susan Werner for me. I did like his "How Did Bruce Lee Die?" song at the end, though -- his presentation of it was hilarious. Then Svetlana proceeded to blow everyone away and bring us to tears of hysterical laughter, with a good mix of older and new songs. "Last Of The Good Straight Girls" was delivered with more conviction than I've ever seen - -- she introduced it by saying that she had been thinking about retiring it from her set, but then she heard that a fan of hers had been the victim of a rather high-profile violent crime in the Philly area, and had to keep singing it for her. The new stuff was excellent -- I can't wait for her new album, which is going to be released on Bottom Line Records in July, yay! (After the show I asked her if she's familiar with her soon-to-be labelmate Veda Hille, and she said no, but she was really intrigued by my description and promised to check her music out. :) The song about "please don't make a movie about my life" was hilarious. She apologized several times for her voice not being quite up to par due to a recent bout with the flu, but I don't think I would've noticed if she hadn't said anything. She sounded great. I can't wait to see her again. Tonight is Susan McKeown in Stamford. I'm blowing off a performance by The Nields up in Windsor that has basically only been advertised on the Internet, and I know I'm going to be kicking myself HARD for not going once I read the reports about the show, but hey. I know Susan's going to be great too. This is the problem Veda Hille had with her latest CD, _Here Is A Picture_. Several of the songs are supposed to run into one another without a break, yet she had to send the CDs back to the plant twice and finally go to a different manufacturer before she could get it done right. Fortunately, this store had CDs of _Bones_, _Through the Bitter Frost and Snow_ and _Bushes & Briars_ (sorry, no copies of the _Peter & Wendy_ CD). As it was, most of the evening came from _Bushes & Briars_ ("In London So Fair," "After Aughrim" sung a capella, "The Mountain Streams where the Moorcocks Crow" e.g.), and only two selections from _Through the Bitter Frost and Snow_ (title song and "Winter King" - and given the weekend weather forecast, Susan thought them appropiate), and only one song from _Bones_ ("Jericho," which started the second set, and which was followed by Susan's remark that the only road to Jericho she's been on to date is our own Jericho Turnpike a/k/a NYS Route 25)... She and Lindsey also did "She's Leaving Home" and closed with an (Irish) jig treatment of "Blue Moon"(!!) - I had never heard _that_ before! It was good to see John there, engineering a live recording of the show (he probably has a better recall of the song list than I do)...also some friends from my Unitarian Universalist congregation showed up (it always helps) and Chris LaPorta - of WUSB-FM's _Global Rhythms_ program - who recorded some station IDs with Susan and Lindsey (seperately) that no doubt will be rushed to air soon... I've been looking for _Peter & Wendy_ for a while now, mostly at Olssons (local shop where I've bought two copies of _Bushes and Briars_, as well as _Through the Bitter Frost and Snow_) and Borders, with absolutely no luck. I happened to be in a Best Buy tonight, and for some inexplicable reason, was going through their absolutely abysmal World Music section, when what should I run across, but yes, _Peter & Wendy_.
