Y'all should check out Terra Incognita, that's where all the info is being kept these days. The new record is slated for May 12 or 19, one of those Tuesdays. H just got back from meeting with set, lighting, sound and multi media designers in NE. She's currently scouting the Earth for a new band and yes Mr. Lovejoy, the album is a stunner. I'd buy it for the artwork alone. Samson is going to go out in a big way on this release. Marketing is all being pieced together and many teams are being assembled and put into place, so pretty soon the dam will break. It's not really my place anymore, but I didn't want anyone to be in the dark. She's got herself a great arrangement and many opportunities. Just a little while now, and you're all in for a treat. Hope all is well with you and you already know about my undying love for y'all, so see ya soon and as always thanks. One point (ever the record company guy, much as I try to distance myself) I'm negotiating H's catalog to her new company. Something they're gonna want to do is change the artwork (no monsters) so if ever there was a time to get an original, it's now. Some titles are bountiful, but some like Rhodes 1 or 2, Ecto, are down to single digits or under 100 in some cases. If you can find one in a store grab it ! There's only a handful here. That's all. I'm a big Gary Oldman fan too. But after seeing this film, I think he should stick to acting. His directing was actually fine. But the script was confusing and the pacing was extremely slow. It was very much like a Mike Leigh film, only less entertaining. BTW, I second the recommendation of _Ma Vie En Rose_. It was great! That way those of us who are too busy (or too lazy ;) to check back at regular intervals will know when there's something of note added. If I can, I'll try to copy and paste the juicy bits into a note here, for those as don't have web access (unless someone gets to it first, anyway). I did check out the Samson web site this evening , and I didn't find one mention of Happy's name there. Of course, for all intents and purposes the label doesn't officially exist yet, since they haven't released anything, so I'm hoping the web site is as much under construction as the rest of the operation, and there'll be some stuff there soon. I did fill out the online form to get on their snail- and e-mail lists, and under "what kind of music do you like" I put "ectophilic", with a link to the definition on Neil's ecto pages. :) Unfortunately I couldn't find another, more free-form method of contacting them: I want to make sure they know we're out here, starved for information. It would be convenient if someone from Samson were to get on ecto, to help get the word out about not only what they're doing with Happy but their other artsts as well. From the information I did find on their site, it looks like they're going to have some really interesting stuff coming out soon. >One point (ever the record company guy, much as I try to distance myself) I'm >negotiating H's catalog to her new company. Since marketing is what I Do (however reluctantly :}) I can understand the reasoning behind this, but I still got a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach when I read about the monsters going away. I guess those sorts of things were inevitable, but ... still. Hopefully these types of compromises will be limited to the artwork. I guess they haven't updated their pages in a while, then, because according to what I saw there tonight, the album is still forthcoming. I assume you've heard it? What's it like? It sounded intriguing, from the description and the listing of her influences (among which were included Throwing Muses). +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Mar 1998 23:50:13 -0500 From: Kamesan Subject: Dayna Manning and friends on CBC For all you folks who get CBC television, Canuck chanteuse Dayna Manning will be featured on the new Canadian variety show _The Nine o'clock Show_ on CBC Tomorrow night (Wednesday March 11). The airtime is predictable for folks in the Eastern time zone. According to the CBC website she'll be performing "My Addiction" and "My Kind", and as a very cool bonus she'll also be performing with the awesome Canadian celtic-rock band Spirit of the West on their amazing song "And if Venice is Sinking." I for one cannot wait to see this collaboration. On Saturday they're airing a show of Celtic music, featuring Ashley MacIsaac, Natalie McMaster, Heather Rankin, Mary Jane Lamond, and others. This one's also at 9pm Eastern. She's hyped on Sampson's web page, but I got the impression there that her album was yet to be released. Either that, or they haven't updated their web site in a while... So, is it out, and how is it? jeff ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Mar 1998 23:07:22 -0600 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: Falling joys! woj asks: >your post reminded me of another australian band with a similar name: the >falling joys. they also have a similar sound -- guitar pop, though with >perhaps a harder edge (though not particularly crunchy). i know they have >at least two records, _wish list_ (released on nettwerk records, in fact) >and _psychohum_, both of which i liked quite a bit. i have a vague memory >that they released a third with a title something like _aerial sunlight_. >can anyone confirm or deny? Is Anthony Horan still around? If he is he's been too damn quiet recently. Anyway, from the Ectophiles' Guide archives, obviously swiped from one of Anthony's year-end lists (unfortunately I can't tell which year): 4. Aerial - Falling Joys Canberra band Falling Joys' finest moment - something must have clicked in the studio, because listening to this album is impossible. You have to *bask* in it. So much melody it should cost twice as much. One autographed copy is known to exist in the US. :-) Hopefully Nettwerk will get it out soon. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Mar 1998 23:11:40 -0600 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: Happy Happy Meredith wrote: >Cool. Actually, the McKinley disc has been released and is out there. I saw it at a disc store just the other day, Samson Music & everything. A month ago or so I went to the web site and registered, and a few weeks later got a postcard in the mail from them. Can't even remember what it said because it didn't mention Happy and that was about all I was looking for. I also wish the website had an email contact or something.
