I get back from LA on the 15th, and am taking the 16th off, so my schedule is very open. The 16th I have tickets to see Victoria Williams, and the 17th is Holly Cole. Closest airport is BWI, but could probably work out details for Dulles or National on the 16th. Of course, I'm doubting much e-mail access after tonight though, so planning would be hard. But if you follow the above, I can meet any plan. Let me know if you were serious. :) Neal ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Mar 1998 02:34:26 -0500 (EST) From: Neal Copperman Subject: music binging Tuesday I saw Michelle Shocked's Intimate Dance Party here in Baltimore. Another fantastic show from Ms. Shocked. (How was the 9:30 Club show Kiri?) SHe's mutated yet again, and has now become a serious rhythm and blues outfit with her backing band The Annointed Earls. (Earl Slik, Earl of Olay, Olive Earl, ....) Yes indeed, a night of bad puns too. Like the request for a Buttweiser after the every popular butt dance. (Scarier in a place with balconies, like 9:30.) SHe's got a new disc out, called Good News, available only at shows in numbered copies (up to 2500). On the disc there is also a really impressive gospel number that was amazing live, as was the closing extended medley of dance songs over the years (including Staying Alive). She played non-stop for about 2.5 hours. Afterwards I hung out to chat a bit, and heard some interesting talks about minstralcy. She's had trouble with record companies in the past since she's pretty serious about trying to span the black/white gap with her music, which her record company wasn't too supportive of. (All this from comments she's made at past shows.) She has comments on Minstralcy in the liner notes of Arkansas Traveler. Anyway, she said that the minstrel shows, aside from the blackface performers, had a single white person who interpreted what was going on for the audience, who mightnot be able to understand. That's where she views herself right now, as the only white person in her all black band. Whatever... the show was really amazing, even though I don't think there was a single black person in the audience. When I talked to her, I told her how interesting it has been to watch her music build to this point in the last few years. I've seen her at least once a year for four years now. First, in San Diego, she did an acoustic set introducing the Kind Hearted Woman songs, stark and emotional, followed by a set with Hothouse Flowers that was rolicking, Arkansas Traveler type stuff. The next year, in DC, she unveiled the songs she had written after moving to New Orleans, supposedly under the influence of the r 'n' b and jazz brass bands. She played solo, all on electric guitar, and you really could imagine what she was talking about in the music. It was a bad time for her too, and the music had a really ragged edge to it. The next year, she returned to the new 9:30 in a strange, sorta jazz chanteuse mode. This didn't work so well, but was fun anyway. The weird thing was that she had horns, yet they played a strange, mellower jazz sound than the New Orleans horns I had arranged around them in my head. That was somewhat disappointing to me, which was why I was so pleased with this band. They are really crunchy, providing the horn-type punch I expected, but without the horns. Oddly enough, she had abandoned all those early New Orleans songs (except for the excellent Little Billy). I told her all the above, and asked why she didn't do any of them. She didn't think the previous horn arrangements would work with the band, but I thought this band would tear those songs apart, which is just what they needed. She said she'd think about re-introducing some, and agreed that last years band didn't really get what she was trying to do. My head was pretty huge as I left after she praised me for being "a discerning listener". :) Then her companion chased me down on the stairs and told me I was so right about the songs, and that I'd be in for a real treat when I got the disc home and listened to the bonus track, which is a raucous, wild horn-driven number. Lotsa fun. Next night, I was all ready to see night 2 of Michelle's visit to Baltimore. It was 8:00, and I was just getting dinner out of the fridge. Popping it into the oven, I picked up the CIty Paper, and was amazed to see that Susan McKeown & Chanting House (or Changing Horse, as the paper said) should be starting that instant in Sykesville. Where the hell is Sykesville, I wondered. A quick call to the club told me it was 30 to 45 minutes from downtonw B-more. Food back to the fridge and into the car I went, arriving about 45 minutes into her set. The small amount of the first set I saw was ok, but didn't really wow me. The second set was much more impressive though. A strong, compelling set of songs. I think I need to hear her work more to appreciate it on first listen though. I found myself most knocked out by the versions of the songs I knew from Bones, though there were some of the traditional ones I was pretty fond of too. In case you care, that night, Chanting House was Chris Cunningham and a cellist. Baldwin's Station is a refurbished train station/restaurant, with a tiny, cosy brick room that is booked for folk music once a week. (Next week, david Massengill.) Very comfortable. There were only about 30 people there though. Portabello bisque was unbelievable! :) as was desert, which should have been since it cost $7 (almost as much as the ticket!). Got Bushes & Briars and Through the bitter frost and snow, but they were all out of PEter & Mary :( Talked with Susan afterwards and she was remarcably friendly, witty and sociable, despite my dropping Mike and meth 'n' woj's names :) I think the post show conversation was as much fun as the show itself. (How come all you folks seeing every single show of hers up north didn't mention that her only DC/Baltimore area appearance of the year was about to happen? Shame!) At the show was Libby Roderick, and Alaskan singer/songwriter who I saw tonight. She said hi to Susan, but didn't identify herself, much to Susan's chagrine when she had her identified later. Tonight's show, at the Folkal Point in COlumbia, started with northeastern folk duo Justina & Joyce. Justina had an amazing voice, sort of like old Joan Baez, but she used it differently. And starting by covering Sweet Honey In the Rock's Seven Year Kiss was a definite good thing in my book. Joyce was a fine singer and perfoermer in her own right, but the pairing didn't quite work for me. Joyce would have been fine by herself, but Justina overpowered her when they sang together. Her bolder, more aggressive style made Joyce's voice seem weaker, though it was fine by itself. Highlight of the show for me was Hildegard van Bingen's (sp?) lost chant written after her trip to Italy, which turned out to be an early music style piece whose lyrics, when tranlslated from latin, turned out to be all pasta. Libby Roderick sang her own songs, which all sounded like they could have been classsic 60's folk songs. She had a very smooth, agreeable voice, and was warm and personable. I'd have been curious what she sounded like singing with Justina. That was a fun show too, though not one that would move me to buy discs or go out of my way for in the future. A very good example of modern folk, but lacking anything that made it really stand out for me. Next up... Cindy Lee Berryhill tonight in LA (yayyy!!) and Tara McLean tomorrow in San Diego. I'll be a tired but happy traveler by then. Well, on this fine, sunny day here on the west coast, Sarah's spring tour is finally set to begin, with her first sold out show taking place in Spokane, Washington this evening. At this point, only 6 shows have not sold out for this particular tour: Asheville, NC (Mar.24th) Charlotte, NC (Mar.25th) Portland, ME (Apr.1st) Buffalo, NY (Apr.4th) Rochester, NY (Apr.5th) Toledo, OH (Apr.8th) Because I've had a few people asking, tickets for Sarah's Buffalo show are actually being sold through a US ticketing outlet called FANTASTIX...they are NOT being sold through Ticketmaster. The Fantastix number to call for ticket info is: (716) 888-4000. Or try 1-888-223-6000. They also have a web site where you can get more info, which is located at: http://www.topsmarkets.com/Locations/custserv/fantastix.htm Remember, any questions about ticket prices or seating info should be directed to all ticketing outlets. Remember too that where available, we will try and provide a link to where you can get further ticket info via the tour dates section of Sarah's web site. In other news, Sarah's newest video for her latest single 'Adia' premiered on various music video stations in both Canada and the US this week. You can see a Quicktime video clip of it by going to the discography section of Sarah's web site, clicking on Surfacing cover, and then clicking on the song. Either that, or simply request it be played on your local music video station. Talk to those radio stations, too! For those of you who missed Sarah's appearance on VH1's 'Storyteller's program last weekend, there's a good possibility it will be re-aired sometime in April. At this time, we don't have an exact date, but when we find out, we'll certainly post about it. Finally, we here at the Nettwerk offices in Vancouver are getting ready to move to our NEW AND IMPROVED OFFICES this weekend, starting tomorrow! YEAH! It's been a bit chaotic here this week, as you can imagine. All of us here are finding that we will have some excellent training in obstacle course runs once this is all over, what with all the boxes everywhere. Our new offices will also include the new and improved Werkshop, where if you happen to be in town, you can drop by and check out all kinds of cool Nettwerk CD's and merchandise (including Lilith Fair merch). It's located at 1648 West 2nd Ave, right next to our main offices. By the way, our phone numbers and fax numbers, etc. will remain the same, but tomorrow (Friday) we will be in a state of moving limbo, so if you happen to be calling for any reason, you may have a problem getting through until the weekend. But don't worry, we will definitely be back in action by Monday. So, this is my very last post from our old address...sniff! Ahh, the memories....
